  1. Thank you Mom22ns! It's great to know that the samples are truly representative!
  2. Thanks so much. This is very helpful!
  3. I'm looking for Chemistry for 10th grade child and am wondering if anyone has experience with it or any of their classes. I'm considering also for my younger kiddos. Any input is greatly appreciated!
  4. I agree that it's a little scary! We survived 9th grade this year and I just wanted to say that I think you will love your dd's geometry and biology teachers (I think I know them!)! Have a great year!!!
  5. I realize I am late to the thread, but wanted to say thanks for this input. I wish there were a way to easily know this for books (other than pre-reading...DD reads 10x faster than I do!) because this is always my concern. It's fairly easy for me to skip a section, but I don't even want to put those things in front of her. Sigh.... Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Let the (slow) pre-reading begin....
  6. Thanks again! I know that the MM Pre-Algebra worksheets are available and we may use them, but I think we are ready to go a different direction. MM has been a solid curriculum, but our verbal, word-problem preferring daughter is ready for a change. :) The TabletClass looks interesting. I am going to look at it some more and thanks for the link to the JA samples. I don't know how I missed them. They look a little "philisophical" and DD might like that...we'll see!
  7. Thanks Derek. I actually had her try the sample of AoPS pre-A and she didn't hate it (for her that's good). Somehow I missed the one for Jousting Armadillos; I'll go back and look again. Thanks for the link to the other thread. I will take a look. Yes, I also agree that AoPS may not be the right thing for her. However, I am concerned that her dislike of math could be that it's not challenging enough, so I don't want to exclude it, but I don't think she's quite there yet in any case. In the meantime, I actually put Real World Algebra in my Amazon cart yesterday, so I think I'll go ahead and buy it. :) Thanks again!
  8. Thanks! I just ran across a middle school thread that mentioned Jousting Armadillos and it looks like it might be just right. I've never heard of it before. "In-between" is I think what we need. I just don't think she's ready to make a huge leap. Out of curiousity, what are you using now and do you/child like it so far? Thanks again!
  9. I just found this thread and we are in a similar situation, but we own no pre-algebra books. :( Some how I didn't see it coming so quickly! I think DD might like AoPS, but I'm not sure she's quite ready. I'd really rather not spend lots of money to test drive a bunch of things since we don't have them on hand. She is almost done with MM6 and LoF Decimals and in the middle of Zacarro's Challenging Math. LoF is her favorite with Zacarro being number 2. She says she doesn't like math, but I think she means she doesn't like arithmetic worksheet type math. What do you all think about Jousting Armadillos as a prequel to AoPS pre-algebra? If you have other suggestions, I'd love to hear them! Thanks!
  10. Thanks Ruth. Somehow I missed the other thread. :)
  11. I'm sure this has come up a million times already, but I'm going to ask again. :D DD10 is halfway through MM6 and working on LoF Decimals. She loves LoF, but not MM and doesn't really like math in particular, though she's quite good at it when she pays attention. :) I am not sure where to go from here, but she need something else. I think math is fun and I'd love for her to think the same. I printed the sample from AoPS pre-A for her to have a look, but I'm not sure whether she's quite ready (I could be wrong). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  12. I just found this thread and want to say thank you so much for the discussion! DD10 is a voracious reader and we are always, always on the hunt for books to try to stay ahead of her though it rarely works for us. :) I don't think I have any to add other than the Kane Chronicles, which is a mythology based trilogy. DD loves mythology, adventure and mystery with some time travel thrown in, lol. Oh, you could add War and Peace to your list; DD requested it for Christmas and has started working her way through it. ETA: I probably just missed it, but I am curious about the criteria you use to sort the books from easy to hard. If you don't mind sharing, I'd appreciate it!
  13. We've had Life of Fred for 9-ish months and both DD10 and DS7 LOVE it. For DD, part of the love is that it is 98% independent. I would say get one book and try it before doing a bunch of different things. For the record, we do LoF and MM, and I think it's going well. :) For other subjects, I'm all ears! P.S. DuoLingo and Mango have be great for Spanish!
  14. Thanks everyone! I had thought of test prep books, but was concerned about the frustration potentional. I think I need to go to the bookstore and see some in person. Meanwhile, I'll check out all of the links! Thanks again!
  15. Hi all, DD10 has recently discovered analogies and I am having trouble supplying as many as she wants. :) I am hoping you have some recommendations of books, online games, etc, that I could give her. FWIW, she is technically in 4th grade, just turned 10, and has a high school/college vocabulary level. I'd love to get her something challenging, but not frustrating, if you know what I mean. Thanks for any and all suggestions!
  16. Thanks for the encouragement! I think I am going to try to do a couple of pages for each month this year. Hopefully, that won't be too overwhelming! Your last comment was exactly what I was thinking: if I at least print them and put them in an album, it's at least a start! Thanks again! :)
  17. Thanks so much RanchGirl! I was worried about buying the "wrong" thing and being "stuck", so you've helped a lot! I used to scrap (traditional style) but that was before 3 kids! My youngest is almost 5 and I would love to get things documented. Right now, everything is in iPhoto by date, but that's it. Joann's is having a sale this weekend, so I'm going to stop in and see what I can find to get started. Thanks again!
  18. Hi all, I realize this post is a little old, but I'm thinking of trying this and am wondering if the PL, Simple Stories and We R Memory Keepers "parts" are all interchangable. For example, can I use PL page protectors in a WRMK album? As much as I am generally a digital person, I really like something about the tactile aspect of books. :) I would really appreciate any help/suggestions! Thanks!
  19. All of the Mother West Wind books by Thorton Burgess are great! My boys (now 4 and 7) have loved them for a couple of years. He also has a Bird Book (fiction) which is a great intro to (non-fiction) birds. Also, my ds7 finished reading all of the Hank the Cowdog books last year and loved them.
  20. I haven't ordered from them in the last month, but mine really shipped USPS...no other labels or anything. :001_unsure: Perhaps they are switching methods.
  21. Things popular at our house: Bird tracking/watching (DS7 loves this), water "blasters", Jenga blocks (mostly for building), watercolor painting (indoors or out), fort building (indoors or out) HTH!
  22. I am so sorry you've had so much trouble. I frequently order from BWB directly (not through Amazon) and buy the books that ship from them. So far, I haven't had any problems and have been very pleased with the books I have received. On Amazon, I've ordered from Thriftbooks and Sierra(something), and though it takes awhile (no surprise), things have arrived in good condition. Just my experience. ETA, all of mine have shipped USPS.
  23. OT, but I saw this list of apps and thought of your daughter! http://brunalab.org/apps/
