LBS
In my new AARP Bulletin there is a nice article about The New U.: How to Learn Anything Online for Free...Browsing this article I see taht they wish to link to their online copy of the article: http://bulletin.aarp.org/yourworld/reinventing/articles/freelearning.html It has some good links to Academic Earth, ResearchChannel, Videolectures.net and more. It says MIT offers free online courses...and gives some good info about getting started. The article refers to Open Culture which is a source for all kinds of free cultural and educational media...I just peeked at it and the first page lists 250 free online courses....I followed the links in a search for Statistics and easily got to an MIT free course. Lots of stuff relevant for my son taking AP Statistics. These ones I looked at briefly, all need further exploring: videolectures.net openculture.com forum-network.org Okay, okay, I gotta get back to www.wonderhowto.com I think this is going to be an all-nighter on this site alone. Guest mommap
Has anyone used online schools for English Comp or Pre-Calulus? Mostly, concerned with teaching Pre-Cal..:glare: We have used Teaching Textbooks in the past, but he would benefit from the discussion between teacher/student. Good math teachers are usually full of tips and more practice problems if needed. I thought finding a good online school might be better than a tutor. Please only suggest a school if you have had a personal experience.. Thanks
lavender
Just found this post, thought I'd add my cents..... Veritas Press Scholars Academy ....very happy with their classes. We've enrolled again this fall for several classes. Landry Academy.....will be taking one class this fall, I'll post how well it goes. We will also be trying Potters School for computer classes. I think it's great to have a thread with online classes listed, especially from experienced families, to make it easier to "shop around" for classes that parents may want to "farm out". :001_smile:

Sebastian (a lady)
Patrick Henry College has some courses available online UCCP has a number of open course style courses for high school, including AP prep level courses. You would need to add tests to what is in their open offerings. There isn't a teacher, but everything for the courses other than assessments seems to be laid out. Beth in SW WA
I didn't see Cybershala mentioned. Singapore math & science classes for K - college level. We are having a great time with our tutor, Rachna. She does CWP on Monday & Friday mornings with dd8 (while I'm doing math with dd7). http://www.Cybershala.com A free demo class is available upon request. Classes are held in an Adobe Acrobat whiteboard classroom with 'live' audio & video. $10/hour. The folks at Cybershala are delightful. We don't have any trouble with the language issues that some have reported. Rachna's Indian accent is not a hinderance to dd's learning. brandigirl
Keystone Online High School is very nice. I took a full course load with them this year. I took honors and AP classes. The AP classes were good and you learned a lot but had a lot of work. If you spread the work out evenly, its 3 assignments a week with about a chapters worth of reading. It really teaches you everything.:D

MBM
My son took the Mathematical Logic 1 course through eIMACS. The material, instructor, presentation, response time and explanations -- all superb. We were extremely happy with this course and plan to sign up ds for the second half probably next year. The Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science site offers courses in Advanced Mathematical Logic AP Calculus Preparation University Computer Science AP Computer Science http://www.eimacs.com/ Northwestern U's Gifted Learning Links (GLL) Academic Essay Writing course with Michael Clay Thompson is quite good. I'd recommend it for a middle schooler. MCT is responsive, offers helpful suggestions, and doesn't belabor points. I just wish we had started his series sooner. http://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/gll/ ETA: Regarding Northwestern's GLL courses, I would recommend those that use someone's name -- Michael Clay Thompson or David White, for example. Many of them are just money makers that deliver very little for the high price you pay. You will only know how good a course is by word of mouth. One of my children taught a few of their Saturday Enrichment courses and was given very little instructions or oversight. We actually designed the course using suggestions from the WTM boards. Any parent here could have done this and saved a bundle of money in the process. I'm not saying they're all bad but caveat emptor. rockala
I see that this thread is quite old so I am not sure of the relevance, but we have used both Apologia Academy and Red Wagon. My dd likes Red Wagon much better-ds started at Red Wagon this year and is happy as well. However there are seveal teachers at AA - note that the science courses have been taught at AA by Mr Rosenoff (in the past) of Red Wagon. Finding the right "fit" for your dc is most important. Some kids respond to teaching styles differently. We find Mr Rosenoff to have passion and is a good lecturer. HTH, Kathy
