Who has started planning for 4th grade?

I'll have a 4th grade son. Here's what's planned thus far.

Math: BJU (starting 4th grade book very soon and will continue next year)

Spelling: ACSI older edition book along with Big IQ Kids online

Writing: IEW SWI A

Cursive: BJU 4th

Logic/Critical Thinking: Logic Countdown, Balance Benders, Perplexors

Reading: BJU 4th, historical fiction, and book club a few times during the year

Possibilities:

Grammar: We're about to start A Beka 4th and give it a try. If we don't like it, I'm unsure what we'll use.

History: We'll be studying year 2 of the cycle. Biblioplan is what we are currently using with SOTW & AG. SOTW & AG may be enough for us next year.

Bible: PAC or a study of kids' versions of books I like such as Secrets of the Vine, A Life God Rewards, etc.

Science:

We just started BJU online for 3rd grade. Ds loves it. I'm just not sure about 4th because of money and the teacher. We may use the 4th grade book on our own because I know I want to use BJU online for middle school. It would be good to follow their scope and sequence all the way through.

*raises hand*

(I love planning.) :)

:iagree:

My dh would like it if I just ordered and stopped going back and forth.

LOL I don't think that he is ready for me to order yet, but I do think he wished that I would stop talking about this versus that when he doesn't know this from that.:)

 i've been afraid to ask about 4th grade. I want to ask if you're still enjoying ECC and if you're going to continue with MFW?

I LOVE ECC. I really want to continue with MFW but we had to make cuts because my estimated budget was way overboard. So, unfortunately we are not continuing with MFW. Its NOT at all because I don't love it, because I do. Its strictly a financial thing. Our curriculum costs were up over $3000. With cuts I got them down to about $1,500!! We are sticking with MFW for my oldest who will be in hi..... hi.... high school  next year though. I am doing a home made version of MFW for the other 3 :D

Next year I will have a 4th grader and a 5th grader! Yikes! Why does that sound so darn old to me!?!?

I do not have all my ducks in a row yet. :) And we start our new year in June of each year...so I guess I need to be at least thinking about it!

What I know so far:

  • Math - Teaching Textbooks - finish 5, go on to 6
  • IEW - SSWA, B
  • American History year 2 - not sure if we will stay with our current text or find something different
  • Science - probably Apologia - we've done Anatomy and Astronomy, not sure which direction we'll go next year
  • LA - Daily Grams & ??
  • Spanish - we will have finished La Clase Divertida Level 2 - what to do after this??
  • English from the Roots Up - finish level 1
  • Spelling Wisdom

I'm so glad to hear this because ECC is one of the programs in the running for us next year. Finances are one of the reasons i'm having such a hard time deciding between it and Biblioplan.

RE-DO!!! :tongue_smilie:

We're basing nearly everything next year off of the The Daring Book for Girls, The Dangerous Book of Heroes, and, because we're doing this with ds10, the Dangerous Book for Boys . For history, physical education, handicrafts and practical living skills, and a fair amount of science plus some language arts, this is our inspiration! We'll add in movies, literature, documentaries, hands-on, etc. and the following:

  • Language Arts: Brave Writer/AO's recommended sequence for language arts; Funnix 2 or other phonics for my late-reading girl
  • Main Math: Math Mammoth Blue series (topical)
  • Supplemental Math: LOF Fractions and Decimals & Percents
  • Science: Notebooking our way through BFSU, finishing vol 1 and then moving into vol 2.
  • Literature: from various resources

We may read aloud from A Little History of the World once a week to keep everything in context, and because it is a lovely book to read.

Next year, I'll be doing 4th grade for the tenth time. I like these threads. They keep me on my toes. :)

Language Arts: FLL 4, SWO finish D - start E, WWE 4, ZB Handwriting 4

Math: Singapore 4A&4B with CWP

Science: Abeka 4, SYRWL Science Junior Book Two

History: SOTW 2 (We all stick with the same history cycle.)

Literature: Year 2 reading list in WTM

Latin: LC1

Spanish: weekly tutoring with a native speaker

Other: 4H, Piano, Ultimate Frisbee, skating, all the other stuff we do around here that I don't think of because they're more like lifestyle than "school"

ETA: I might as well add Morning Time plans here. This is all continuation of what we're doing this year for Morning Time.

Bible: Child's Story Bible by Vox

Hymn study: Hymns for Kids

Poetry: MCT

Scripture memory: Beatitudes, Isaiah 53

History Review: Veritas Cards and songs

Church History: History Lives series

Catechism for young children

I've started, but I've still got loads of time as we don't officially change grades until January. :tongue_smilie:

What I have so far:

Math Mammoth 4

MCT Island or Galore Park Junior English 3 ('cause dang, MCT is expensive!)

Writing with Ease 3

All About Spelling 4/5

finish The Complete Book of Maps and Geography

I Speak Latin, possibly with Minimus

Linguistic Development Through Poetry Memorization, continued from this year

Sort of up in the air about history and science. Right now I'm leaning towards doing AO's Year 4 science and Year 3 history and literature, since we're doing US history this year and I don't want to repeat it so soon. I'll have to compact Our Island Story and CHOW, though. And I may add Galore Park Junior Science 3, because nature study just doesn't get done around here.

Wow--teaching 4th grade for the tenth time?

Maybe I should just copy your list...

But then what would become of my "hobby" as dh calls it (curriculum research)?

I definitely second The Child's Story Bible (Vos). That is the best story bible I have ever read.

The only thing I know for sure is Teaching Textbooks for math, All about Spelling, SOTW, and Growing with Grammar. These are working great, both of us are happy with them. I am up in the air about writing, and science. We used WWE for the past 2 years and we have hit a plateau, and I keep dropping our science cores in favor of hands on experiments and lots of museums and rabbit trails. Oh and I am outsourcing art. I just don't get it done and my boys are neither crafty or enjoy coloring. I am thinking more sculpture, pottery, woodworking, or leather crafting.

Right now I'm thinking Rod & Staff for almost everything except math (he'll do Singapore). I really want to do a test run with all textbooks and I love what I'm currently using from Rod & Staff. We will see how it goes. :)

Do you create your own unit studies for history and Science?

Yes, I do create my own unit studies for history and science.

My boys didn't like SOTW. So, I started with that as my base in Ancients and Middle Ages. For American History, we started with Beautiful Feet but it was moving really slow and the readings were to easy for my boys. Currently, we are watching Liberty's Kids and then reading books for the American Revolution. I am looking at doing History Pockets for the Civil War. Not sure after that. Basically, I try to find different ways of presenting history. Once, we start the cycle a second time I am hoping to be able to find a spine the is engaging and appropriate for my older two.

As for Science, we do a lot of hands on stuff in the summer. So by this time of year, I am feeling like we don't do much. My boys really enjoyed and remember doing Arctic Tundra, One Small Square two years ago. So, this coming year I am planning on doing 3 or 4 more of the One Small Square books. For the other months, I really want to do more hands on science. I am looking at doing butterflies, TOPS Corn and Beans or Radishes, possibly a unit on Solids, Liquids and Gases.

These have been the hardest subjects for me to find and stick with. I am very thankful that my husband is willing to listen and brainstorm with me. He really helps me to be able to see what our boys are enjoying and how to make things work for our family.

I saw this thread and it took me a minute to realize I will have a 4th grader next year....and yes, I am already planning. I can't believe it, how did I get a 4th grader?????

My 4th grader will be using:

TT 5

BJU W&G 4

SWO D

CLE Reading 4

copywork/memorization

BJU Science

BJU Heritage studies

I can't believe we're using mostly BJU stuff, if you knew me you'd be laughing your heads off right now....I am SOOOOO not a BJU person ;)!

The only real change we're making is to TT math. We've used CLE since 1st, and it's time to move on.

I have had 2 people tell me there is a HUGE jump academically from 3rd to 4th grade. I was under the impression that the jump was from 2nd to 3rd was worse, but now I am wondering. Does anyone know? :D

Well, we are continuously plucking and tweaking our methods being that this is our first full "School year" of homeschooling. Its been right at a year since I have pulled them from PS. We had some barriers to cross with some gaps from changing schools three times in three years across two states and then adapting to homeschool life. I do think we are finally starting to feel comfortable in our shoes or atleast comfortable enough to realize its just a give and take. We did a complete overhaul the last week of december/first week of January by using TWTM methods so we are quite new with all of our curriculum... We will probably not declare this curriculum as for a set date but we will proceed until we need to move on to the next thing being that this will probably hold us until 2013.

Right now the only two things that we have that I am quite confident and happy with is DK First Animal Encylopedia for science, SOTW V1 and AG, TT3, ETC and our cursive and handwriting books. We are using 100ez lessons with the girls however, I am not using the script at all but just letting them progressively read the words as they become harder. They know all their vowel and consonant sounds and doing wonders with ETC. I should prolly just buy the entire set of BOB books instead of 100EZ. I am in the process of purchasing our grammar and spelling for the boys. Going with MTC it seems and R&S spelling.

I am hoping that I will find my groove soon and will stop tweaking and be more following through with purchases, ha ha!

I would love to hear how you're doing the homemade version of MFW:bigear:. We're slated to do Rome to Reformation next year, but dh just got laid off, so we're not sure where our money situation will be and I'd like to start setting stuff up.

I will also have a 4th grader next year... and I'm entirely unsure of our plans yet, LOL!! That's one reason I joined this forum! :)

We may be overhauling a lot for next year. We started off sort of basic as this was our first year at home. I do think we're going to expand for 4th grade.

Just some of the things we've been looking at:

Math: Either stick with Abeka; move to TT; or move to Saxon

LA: We've been using LLATL and it's just not for us, so I'm kind of piecemealing together for the rest of the year. I'm seriously considering MCT for next year, but I'm examining other options too.

History: We may do a one year American History study, but I've also been looking at TruthQuest History, and we would start with the Ancients and go from there.

Science: I'm kind of intrigued by Beautiful Feet's History of Science program.

As you can see, we're all over the map and I have some research to do!!

My ds will move into 4th this fall, so I've had a rough outline in my head as to what we'll do---it would be fun to write it down and share.

We'll mostly keep using what we've been using but move it up a level. I'm staying with his favorite books and changing some others.

We're doing Oak Meadow 4th next year---this should be fun.

Language arts: Easy Grammar 4, Sequential Spelling 3, Writing Strands 4,(also journal/creative writing using Doing The Days) HWT cursive 4, Reading Comp book 2, Wordly Wise 4.

Ambleside online and several other resources for reading suggestions. (we seriously can never read all the books on my lists ;) )

Math: Saxon 54 (may supplement with some Kumon books for extra practice if I feel it's needed) and we also use the Family Math book and Figure It Out booklets for math logic and problem solving.

History: SOTW (hopefully we'll be able to move into Middle Ages by then). Also various reading to get a grounding in Am History. I don't know what to use for geography--I have a few blackline maps books and some Scholastic books, may try to pull something together on my own using these. I've been looking at some Evan-Moor geography books.

Science: still trying to figure this one out. I'd like to continue with RS4K and I'm thinking about GSA books and TOPS and pulling together my own plans for this subject as well. My Kinder will be using ScienceWorks so I may just keep my 4th with some of these books as well. I'm also planning on getting Handbook of Nature Study (been wanting to seriously do that for ever)

Also plan on using Building Thinking Skills. I also have a lot of random Scholastic books and ebooks that I usually glean ideas from as we go along. I pull ideas out of WTM too of course.

Karate, soccer, and tennis in spring, co-op, probably continue in OT as well.

Art and Music; readings and listening (Classical Kids) and http://www.kinderart.com projects and various activities from arts and crafts books.

It's still all jumbled in my mind and I really need to sit down and plan it into a working schedule while fitting my really active Kinder into it.

I have a massive stack of curriculum building up in my bedroom already. :blushing: I'll have a 4th grader and a 2nd grader. My 2nd grader will be home for the first time, so it'll make for an interesting year.

Anyway, for DS, I will be using:

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Spelling - Spelling Workout (continue; we're currently on E... we'll stop formal spelling after 4th)

Grammar - FLL 4

Writing - Handwriting Without Tears, Winning With Writing level 4, and various projects (some typed, some handwritten, in various formats)

Reading - I've come up with 15-20 appropriate books to read throughout the year (book reports 2-3 times per semester)

MATH: Math-U-See (we're currently 2/3 of the way through Delta)

HISTORY: SOTW Vol. IV

SCIENCE: Elemental Science, grammar stage physics

ELECTIVES:

P.E. - Swim (lessons and possibly team practice; if not, we'll get a Salvation Army or YMCA membership)

Languages - La Clase Divertida level 2 and Minimus Seconds

Logic - Various books from The Critical Thinking Co. and Amazon

Music - Piano lessons at home

Art - Artistic Pursuits book 2

I think this is what my son - my "baby" - will use for 4th....

Bible - Continue Apologia Worldview books

History - Continue America the Beautiful with brother - he's doing great at this.

Science - God's Design for the Physical World (AIG)

Math - CLE 400

LA - not sure on all this yet...but probably CLE 400 -LA & Reading - He's doing Winning with Writing right now, but probably going to intersperse that with WWE...also still working on HWT Cursive programs and AAS - in 4 now - probably finish that this year and do 5 next year.

And, then some classes at co-op again.

Piano lessons and baseball!
