If I needed to homeschool on a desert island, I would take....

Thought this might be a fun thread. Please be sure to list why.

If I had to home school on a desert island, I would take....

Here are the rules:

You can take 4 read-alouds

You can take 3 curricula

You can take 2 reference books

You can take 1 home school book

Oh and enough supplies to work with the above (you do not have to list unless you think it is worth listing) Oh and you can take a flask...just kidding

This is impossible, I have more than 3 curricula to cover language arts! :tongue_smilie:

Ah! That's hard. When I read the title I was going to say

a generator or some solar panels

my mobile WiFi

my laptop

my printer

I think my 1 home school book would be a huge compilation of Charlotte Mason's Home Education Series. I would say WTM, but the curriculum and resource lists would bug me on a desert island!

2 reference books - An encyclopedia and a dictionary.

3 curricula - Nebel's science (I'll argue that BFSU and Elementary Science Education are part of one curriculum), SOTW, and my brand new Math Mammoth CD that came in the mail yesterday.

4 read-alouds - I would choose a series. The first that comes to mind with four books would be The Hobbit plus the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I wish I could fit some Latin in there ... but I wouldn't drop science, history, or math to bring a Latin curriculum. Maybe I could smuggle Wheelock in my purse. ;) Too bad about Webster's Speller, too. Maybe I could just memorize the syllabary before we set sail!

I'd want a book about surviving being stranded on a desert island!

:iagree:

That would be my reference book along with a book about navigation.

Read alouds:

Moby Dick

Le Morte d'Arthur

The big Beatrix Potter book

Treasure Island

The only school book I'd take would be Phonics Pathways (assuming they weren't already reading or incase I had more ;) ). Other than learning to read, I'd let my kids just run wild. We'd be too busy swimming, fishing, and building a cool house that could survive the hurricane season.

4 read alouds:

the scriptures--to remind us of God blessing His people, of the laws that He has given us, of His promises, etc.....and also for varied vocabulary/copywork material/spelling reference/use of varied literary forms including chiasms

Shakespeare's complete works--a lot of width and depth of material there, and if you're on an island speaking in iambic pentameter gives you something to do.

either a Treasury of Children's Literature (the classics) or 20th Century Book Treasury (a lot of the books from Five in a Row in a bindup): I still have young children and I want some great bedtime stories for them

and finally I'd pick something that dh and I would enjoy reading aloud/to ourselves: I'd probably pick The Complete Works of Jane Austen, dh would probably want the Wheel of Time series, and we'd probably compromise by taking the Harry Potter series....we'd bring it on a kindle so it would count as one book. ;)

3 curricula:

MM cd's (We use Math-U-See irl, but I only get one book)

Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia

Rod and Staff's English Handbook

2 reference:

encyclopedia series (Britannica?) on kindle

Story of Painting

1 homeschool book:

Well-Educated Mind

I'd be bringing a lot of art supplies, science experiment kits--including those that could improve life on the island, kindle + solar charger (laptop + satellite link would be better ;) ), several reams of HWT paper in addition to bound journals in addition to the usual paper/scissors/glue/colored pencils stuff.

I can't take a bathtub for re-energizing myself? Egads! That was one of my saving graces when my children were much younger. :tongue_smilie:

I would have different items for different ages, but of course I'll answer for my high schoolers.

Also, the length of time would matter because I would need to decide if I should bring a grade level curriculum or something that would provide enough material to cover for years.

4 read-alouds:

Lord of the Rings (even though I'm so tired of it)

Count of Monte Cristo (DH said it's time consuming and it never gets old)

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Tom Sawyer

3 curricula:

Critical Thinking (like Red Herring Mysteries)

K12 History Odyssey

an Algebra textbook

2 references:

Atlas

Kingfisher History Encyclopedia

1 homeschool book:

Homeschooling Our Children, Unschooling Ourselves (my favorite inspirational book)

Read-Alouds:

Swallows and Amazons

The Sword in the Stone

The Harry Potter series

Shakespeare (Complete Works)

Curricula:

Singapore math

Story of the World with the activity guide and all of the supplemental reading and materials

Science and nature study materials

Reference:

Outdoor survival guide ;)

Google

But since it's a desert isle, I suppose there isn't internet access, so I'd like a really good nature reference book particular to the area in which we're living

Homeschool book:

I'd bring all of the Charlotte Mason writings that I've always meant to read but haven't had time to sit and really delve into

ETA: In the flask, I'd bring coffee!

Hey now, if I can choose 4 series instead of 4 books for my read-alouds, I'm going to have to change it!

Beatrix Potter's books

the Little House series

The Hobbit + the Lord of the Rings trilogy

the complete works of Shakespeare

Something for every age group! I couldn't decide between Little House and Anne of Green Gables, but I think boys would appreciate Little House more, so it wins. I almost replaced it with the Chronicles of Narnia though ... but I'll stop thinking now!

I'd want a book about surviving being stranded on a desert island!

Speaking of which:

“A lot of people ask me if I were shipwrecked, and could only have one book, what would it be? I always say 'How to Build a Boat†by Stephen Wright (American Actor and Writer)

I'd vote for a speed boat and the keys to it.

Regards,

Kareni
