Chris in VA
I think it's PG, but Nim's Island is an absolute favorite here. We showed it at dd's birthday sleepover. It was perfect.
Jean in Newcastle
Apple Dumpling Gang (an oldie with Don Knotts but funny!) Space Buddies or any of the "buddy" movies
BikeBookBread
What are your children's ages and interests? What are your movie "bugaboos"? (Some PG films are perfectly fine, but may be PG because of situational peril, etc...) For example, Up is wonderfully uplifting and shows the value of honoring the elderly, but is PG because of peril.) You might want to check out the Kids In Mind website for very unbiased and non-loaded reviews of films. Ditto on the 1950's and 60's Disney films. Recently loved watching The Shaggy Dog and the original Parent Trap. Edited June 8, 2010 by BikeBookBread

milovany
Hachi! Not G, but the only "iffy" thing is a husband and wife kissing. Great movie. We just watched the latest Free Willy movie with Bindi Irwin and liked it better than the first. No boy/girl stuff.
lighthouseacademy
Hachi! Not G, but the only "iffy" thing is a husband and wife kissing. Great movie. We just watched the latest Free Willy movie with Bindi Irwin and liked it better than the first. No boy/girl stuff. According to Netflix, it is rated G. I too was going to recommend Hachi. I am pretty particular with what I let me kids watch. This movie was very sweet.
Sebastian (a lady)
Does anyone have any good suggestions? It's the story of a sled dog team that gets left in the Antarctic. Animal survival scenes. It reminded me of Incredible Journey from when I was a kid.
FaithManor
Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs? We loved that one and also "Meet the Robinsons". Faith
MaMa2005
The Wizard of Oz! Also, though it is rated PG and we had just read the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Johnny Depp) is an absolute favorite of my son's. He got the moral of the story (don't be a spoiled brat) and often refers to it when seeing another child acting out :tongue_smilie:

They are horror movies, for kids. If you like outer space, pick space chimps. It is soooo funny!;) Senceirly, Brenna.
whitestavern
Here are a bunch we've watched. Not sure if they're all rated G, but the only thing I can think of in any of them to make them PG would be some scary scenes. Yankee Doodle Dandy Fiddler on the Roof Captains Courageous Duma Kiki's Delivery Service The Howards of Virginia Keeping the Promise The Pirate Darby O'Gill and the Little People Cheaper by the Dozen (older version) Gulliver's Travels My Neighbor Totoro Black Beauty Escape to Witch Mountain (older version) Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Pippi Longstocking The Railway Children The Thief of Bagdad Follow Me, Boys! Meet Me in St. Louis That Darn Cat Life With Father The Black Stallion The Shaggy Dog Toby Tyler Friendly Persuasion Mighty Joe Young Ponyo The Great Locomotive Chase The King & I The Bishop’s Wife (old version) Davy Crockett Up Around the World in 80 Days My Fair Lady

Guest Alte Veste Academy
Does anyone have any good suggestions? Wow! You received so many wonderful responses. I was going to say that I just purchased The Best Old Movies for Families and I love, love, love it! On the author's recommendation, we watched Singin' in the Rain for family movie night last week and the kids couldn't get enough. It was laugh-out-loud, gut-busting funny to them! This week we're going to watch Bringing Up Baby. I feel like our family movie night is getting a second wind! :001_smile:

LibraryLover
Any 1960's Disney movies. I would be very careful. There is some very iffy stuff. That Darn Cat, for instance, has a horrible scene where the bad guys tie up a woman and verbally torture and lear/drool all over her. It's disgusting. Plus, rascism is rampant. You might show them, but you might need to talk about them. The "We Are Japanese, If You Please" in Lady & The Tramp is pretty bad. Dumbo is one long movie about bullying and racism. LibraryLover
We love: A League of Their Own Sandlot Princess Bride Matilda Eloise Finding Nemo Ella Enchanted A Knight's Tale Billy Elliot Babe (but not the In The City one) We also love old movies: Singing in The Rain The Ghost and Mr Chicken (somewhat scary, really lol) The Ghost and Mrs Muir It's A Wonderful Life Goodbye Charlie Yours, Mine & Ours Meet Me in St Louis Andy Hardy movies Danny Kaye movies I am not sure any of these are rated G. I don't put much stock into ratings. Edited June 9, 2010 by LibraryLover
elise1mds
Kung Fu Panda. I know, I know, but I laughed SO hard at this movie after being resistant to it for quite a while. It's got a great message about acceptance and being who you are.
FloridaLisa
Off the top of my head, these are some we've really enjoyed: Musicals -- Sound of Music, Musicman, Hello Dolly, others but *not* Grease! Sound of Music Fiddler on the Roof Benji Gifted Hands Facing the Giants Fireproof (more mature theme, but no bad language) Little House on the Prairie The Waltons The Inn of Sixth Happiness (well done film about Gladys Aylward) Heidi Dennis the Menace I and II (these are great!) Love Comes Softly (and that entire series) I Will Fight No More Forever Treasures of the Snow (based on book by Patricia St. John) Joni (based on biography of Joni Erikson Tada) Also nice for family movie night are IMAX movies Other really good family films with PG rating (though I can't recall anything objectionable and we're pretty picky): Amazing Grace Man From Snowy River
BikeBookBread
The "We Are Japanese, If You Please" in Lady & The Tramp is pretty bad. Actually, it's "We are Siamese..." not that that is any better (they are Siamese cats...) but the unkind Asian stereotype is very obvious. LibraryLover
Actually, it's "We are Siamese..." not that that is any better (they are Siamese cats...) but the unkind Asian stereotype is very obvious. You're right. I tried to purge it...did a pretty good job, too. Until now. ;) There is such garbage out there, really. I try not to roll my eyes when people think old movies are always better than contemporary ones. There is so much apcray---and apcray knows no particular era/decade. No time period is safe. Rhonda in TX
Another vote for Meet the Robinsons. It's one we watch over and over. It's also led to some great discussions with our kids about what makes a family.
