  1. I went through 3 sets of cookware in the forst 5 yrs of my marriage... I finally bought a Cuisinart set from Amazon. I LOVE my Cuisinart Everyday Stainless set. They don't make that model anymore but they do make a similar all stainless set now. I have a big stock pot in the newer line and like it too. I have dishwasher no problem and the instructions said it would help shine it. Clean up is almost always a cinch even when one of my kids burns something. I have had then for 9 or 10 yrs and most still look almost new. (One lids doesn't because a child burned plastic or something on it and while clean it now looks weird). The best part is the cuisinart sets are not too expensive on amazon.
  2. I am not a dietician but reading your meal plan you mentioned a lot of high fat foods. I have done a lot of research into diet/ diabetes/ candida, etc. What I have found is that more important than carbs is dietary fat. If your dietary fat is too high then the body can't metabolize the glucose because the insulin can't get to the cells. Anything you eat whether fat, carb, or protein will be converted to glucose by the body. We run on glucose. If we are forcing too much fat to glucose conversion or too much protein to glucose conversion it can be pretty tough on the body. You might consider reading some of Dr. Fuhrman's works. He has successfully gotten his patients off insulin regularly. Dr. Furhman tends to be lower carb and low fat but HIGH on the veggies. They are SO important.
  3. The rainbow ones say they are 1:4 pitch though. That is why I am so confused. Did they say 1:4 on the package too?
  4. I have read several topics on the boards about using the rainbow spirals from amazon with the proclick but somewhere I read that the proclick is 1:3 pitch and the spirals that have been linked to are 1:4 pitch. How does that work? Thanks.
  5. When I look over some of the lists that people post, I have never heard of some of the books. How do you decide which books you want to be sure to hit each year? I am trying to formulate a 6th grade reading list.
  6. I have to admit, I am not a big fan of Shakespeare but I don't want my general not like get in the way of my children having an opportunity to like it. We are coming up on Shakespeare in SOTW and I am not really loving most of the activities in the book- we can't do the eye of newt poem with candy because we have food allergies and the rest are not very inspiring to me. Can you think of any inspiring activities we can do? Thanks.
  7. Thanks. I will check them out. Some of those look very interesting.
  8. I don't get to listen to motivating homeschool conference speakers much. Any chance there are some great homeschool podcasts available?
  9. I am new to librivox and not familiar with the readers. I want Beatrix Potter: http://librivox.org/great-big-treasury-of-beatrix-potter/ and want to know which reader is good if you have heard any of them- too bad there aren't samples like on my library's site!
  10. I am in the same debate boat. I am another possible beta tester. I have been doing IEW with ds and its ok, but he is missing some vital parts of editing etc. looking at the lower level books looked like some of the missing parts might come together better with this program so I thought I would try it out. But the schedule might kill me or make me stronger LOL
  11. I don't have time to read replies but these are my thoughts- Is it possible that he doesn't like the question? My son HATED direct questions for YEARS. I think he was in 3rd grade (oh wait, that was a year ago!) before I could ask him a direct question and expect an answer. If I had asked him what letter is that, he wouldn't answer or would say I don't know because he wanted it to be perfect and fears mistakes (he was a late talker because he didn't want to make a mistake). So instead, I would say, please hand me the _________. Or, I need a ___________. I have had the opposite experience of some ladies with multiple kids. Some of my younger ones have actually taken longer to do some things. For example, my 3rd child was my latest talker and my latest figuring out letter names etc but as she is almost 5 all of a sudden she is obsessed with learning to read and letter identification. If you are concerned, then investigate, otherwise I would just watch and wait and read LOTS of books to him. (oh, and my oldest learned numbers by looking at page numbers).
  12. I haven't totally BTDT but I started IEW with my son this past year and it has been teaching him outlining in a rather painless way for both fiction and non-fiction materials. I would show you, but his chickscratch outlines are not very legible right now and they really won't make a whole lot of sense without the IEW explanation- but they work.
  13. I have a rising 5th grader who is chronologically a young rising 4th grader. Mentally, logically, and mostly emotionally he is ready to be a 5th grader so please don't tell me he is only 9 or something like that... that isn't my issue here. It seems like everyone else has figured out how to structure their day or curriculum choices and gets through so much but I feel like even when I structure it, we don't get there. Heck, we have been in SOTW for 3 years and still have 9 chapters to go. Now in honesty we will take time and go on a rabbit trail and break away from a more classical style to more unit study type schooling for a bit but then come back. But, how do you all know what the book lists are, which ones are worth reading, etc. I study these boards and I read the anthologies, but I am still a bit flummoxed as to how to structure this next year. On top of that, I have to add the rising K who could finish Alpha with her eyes closed if I had let her this past year but didn't want to let her flash past her sister just yet since her sister is such a dreamer and while capable has no motivation to move along anywhere, and get her reading more. Oh, and bring the 7 yr old home from the fairies long enough to get through 2nd grade and keep the almost 2 yr old from scribbling on everything in sight!
  14. Thanks for the input and pointing out the holes that PA fills before A! Think we will stick with MUS too...
  15. What are some good chick flicks that are available on instant queue from Netflix? I am having a hard time with dh being gone too he rarely was traveling but since the end of January he has been gone every other week and the last 3 weeks solid.
  16. Just saw that as of a few days ago K9 is available for the ipod touch. It apparently isn't as good as the PC version yet, but that is a start.
  17. The map feature won't work unless you connect to wifi but if you connect to wifi and then get away from it, it will remember the map and allow you to see your directions.
  18. Anyone use it? Do you like it? Reviews please.
  19. I can't seem to search the forum :( I keep getting a white screen with this on it: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 71 bytes) in /www/welltrainedmind/forums/search.php on line 1155
  20. Our den meets every Tuesday all year except in July because we do Day Camp then. We have one pack meeting a month. If we have a big event, like blue and gold, then it is done instead of pack meeting or rather combined with pack meeting. If we have an outside activity like a hike or field trip, then we might skip a den meeting and have den meeting be on a different day for that special activity.
  21. I am a convert because I read the Book of Mormon to find out if it was true. At the time, I believed that a lot of the LDS beliefs were weird and couldn't understand any of them. I decided that I better go to the source since by the fruits we know them... thus, I read the Book of Mormon. I prayed if IT was the word of God. By logical deduction, if it is, then Joseph Smith was a prophet. I know that he saw God the Father and Jesus Christ just as he said he did. I don't have faith in this- I know it to be true. I continued to study and it began to make sense. I might not understand obscure doctrine in its entirety (like some of the questions asked in this thread) but I know that the Lord will not permit his prophets to lead His children astray and I can pray for confirmation that the doctrine is true. I know that God lives. He is the father of my spirit. Jesus is his son and the only begotten in the flesh. Jesus atoned for my sins and loves me and every other person on this Earth and who has ever lived. I know that all man kind can be saved and that we can be with our families for eternity. I also know that the Lord is just and will not condemn those who did not get baptized due to a lack of opportunity and that is one reason we perform temple work (BTW there is a scripture on baptisms for the dead in 1 Corinthians 15).
  22. Reminds me of when I was a kid and my grandma offered chocolate chip cookies to my froends little brother. He was all excited and when he saw it wasn't chips ahoy he sai, "Oh, I just remembered I don't like chovolate chip cookies."
  23. I night weaned my oldest to get pregnant with my 2nd... no regrets. He weaned when I was 9 weeks pregnant. I also night weaned my 2nd to get more sleep than 1 hr at a time- I just couldn't be a good mommy anymore getting up every 1/2 hr-hr to nurse. I kept nursing her for another 8 months during the day... She weaned when I was 9 weeks pregnant. The only one that I was a little sad to wean was my 3rd because I had to wean her and she loved nursing. She was my only child who was enjoyable to nurse. Her weaning is a bit of a bitter sweet memory. I don't regret it though. I truly needed a few months of my body so I could do some healing before conceiving again. I have night weaned ALL my kids before day weaning. I used Dr. Jay Gordon's technique for night weaning. It worked with all my kids, even my love to nurse sensitive one. Also, I ovulated once I was no longer nursing at night. I am probably going to start night weaning my 14 month old soon. She wakes every hour if she co-sleeps and no one is happy. For now, I would be content to get her to 2 wakings a night because I don't mind if I hold off my cycle a bit longer. I intend to nurse her until 2 though during the day at least.
