What is your plan for K?

Recommended Posts

Ds will be doing:

OPGTR & McGuffey Primer as long as necessary (we'll see where we are come the autumn!)

Handwriting Without Tears

Spelling Workout A (his request)

WWE 1 (maybe)

Right Start

SOTW 1 (dd starts ancients again next year; they are doing it 'together' upon request)

informal science, music, and art - more because he wants to do everything just like his sister. :)

Phonics: we'll continue OPGTR, Sonlight and Pathway readers

Math: Saxon 1

Grammar: FLL 1

Writing: WWE 1 and copywork

Spelling: SWO A

HOD LHFHG for all the rest. Big sisters will be doing ancients so she'll probably get in on some of that too. Building on her reading, writing, and math will be the emphasis.

LOL Define K ? ( It's been one of those days/weeks/years )

We basically did K'ish this year.

OPGTR, Saxon K - 1, Sonlight P 3/4, P 4/5, K, Mudpies to Magnets, Handle on the Arts Science for P 4/5, and tons and tons of reading. Focusing mainly on learning to read and science and math.

We're on an unusual schedule here, due to the way I pulled my older kids from public school a couple of years ago (and a stop-and-start first year of homeschooling!). So, my older children officially began the current school year in January, and we are on a pace to eventually get back to a more traditional start. So, dd5 has started doing just a few things, but not all! Does that even make any sense??? Anyway, we are going to stick with OPGTR and lots of read-alouds, phonic games, etc. I am thinking of going with Right Start for math, after seeing some excited reviews (although I'm torn, because my older child does well with Singapore). We will throw in some FIAR, some science experiments, and nature walks. Oh, and I will of course welcome her to sit in on what the olders are doing with SOTW. I already give her the coloring sheets, and invite her to listen in. I'm very excited about getting started! Looking forward to hearing what others are doing!

Oh, and I forgot, HWT!

Here's what we did for K this year...it went really well.

LA: Spell to Write and Read, SL Readers 1, DEL

Math: HorizonsK/1, Singapore 1A/B, CWP 1, Miquon Orange (mathy kid and I started at too low a level with Horizons...he finishes programs quickly).

Bible/Read Alouds/Science: SL P4/5, SL P3/4

Geography: Evan Moor Beginning Geography Set

Art: AP's preschool book.

We basically started with SL and the 3Rs and then added some extra stuff for fun. We'll do the same next year for 1st. I have a few more fun extras up my sleeve.

Our youngest was 5 in December. He is finishing up K. He has done ETC, Singapore K and lots of letters and phonics. He is reading 3 letter words now. Next year, he will technically be in K. We will be doing 1st grade work. I will be using MTB 5-7. He'll sit in on the older children lessons when he wants:)

Kindy at our house looks like this:

-Phonics Pathways, supplemented with BOB books, Now I'm Reading books (by Nora Gaydos), Leapfrog videos, and http://www.starfall.com

-a pile of blocks for counting, and an abacus

-a writing tablet for practicing name

-a writing workbook, for working on the rest of the alphabet

Our K year started about 7 weeks ago for ds5 and so far we have just been doing:

Alphaphonics (about 10mins combined with below resource)

Effective Pre-reading (easy phonics workbook, working well)

Abeka K handwriting. (couple of minutes)

Easy-Learn Maths K and Mathletics, counting money. (a few minutes)

Easy readers from ABCteach.com (few more minutes)

Reading books together - some from SL pre-K (however much we do).

I'm finding this is enough for him at this stage. Sometimes he sits in on older readings, sometimes not. I don't mind either way.

Well ... being a firm believer of "Better Late then Early" ... as well as a horrid procrastinator... as well as having boys who have all been "late bloomers" ... We also school pretty much year round ...

This is my "Kinder" plan for ds 3 ... who is 6 now ... for over the summer :

ABC series (by R&S)

Before We Read (by Pathways)

Writing notepad (lined paper) to learn name

Wipe off number writing book

Pre-Writing workbooks

Various games online for counting/sorting/matching

Sitting in with the other two for Apologia Astronomy (soon to be Botany)

Plenty of discussions about other math/science concepts

Listening to ds 1 read his Bible and Health & Manners lessons

Pretty laid back around here about this age ...

Once he can use a pencil to form letters/numbers at all we will start the following

R&S Math 1

CLE Learning to Read

Both of these he is very excited about, and keeps asking for already.

Of course my boys all play with duplos, legos, blocks, K'nex, pattern blocks, math cubes, and have tons of books around as well as other toys.

Our plan for K is:

OPGTR with Happy Phonics and Explode the Code

HWT

Right Start math with a couple additional Montessori materials added in

FIAR with LOTS of complementary books

Galloping the Globe

Basic American history and historical units on the holidays

Whatever science strikes our fancy (based on FIAR books or the local homeschool science classes)

Martial arts, dance, tennis (or maybe gymnastics)

art, music (and maybe drama)

We'll start K this summer I think. We start Class. Conv. this fall, so he will do that as well as tag along with big sis to flesh out bible, history, science, geog, latin, spanish, etc. My main focus with him will be learning to read with SSRW and math with Miquon and MM. I'll prob also start HWOT and add something at the end of SSRW but not sure what yet. Also lots of books and play time.

I'm thinking for my DD we will do the following:

OPGTR (not sure if I need something else to learn to read?)

McRuffy Math K

Zaner-Bloser Handwriting K

Language Lessons for Little Ones

I also plan on doing some of Mudpies to Magnets and she loves doing whatever her brothers are doing. She wants to have a butterfly house. I'm doing American History with my younger 2 boys, so I'll read stories that she can understand as well. We'll do LOTS of read alouds. She loves art, so we'll do plenty of that too.

For K, we are concentrating on the 3R's, the Bible and science. We are doing K right now even though our official K year begins in the fall.

Here's what we are doing now:

Bible - reading through a devotional

Math- Horizons K

Science - Sonlight K

Reading/LA - dd works on starfall.com, readingeggs.com, we read aloud and she reads to me. She uses BOB books and whatever else is at about a K level in reading.

Writing - she just took an interest so I bought some books from the Dollar Tree to trace and write in - nothing formal yet.

Here is what we are doing when we start "official" K:

Bible - either CLE Bible 1 or Lifepac Bible 1 (from Alpha Omega)

Math - Singapore math 1 with either A beka 1 or Horizons 1 as supplement, CWP

Science - continue with Sonlight Science K

Reading/Phonics - not sure the exact plan yet. But I do have Horizons Phonics K. I am also going to introduce her to Progressive Phonics - it's free.

Writing - not sure yet, I want to see how well she progresses between now and then.

Those are the more "formal" things. We will also include crafts, music, PE, real life stuff, etc.

For K, I have state standards to think about and I asked my big girl what she wants to learn about the most (her response: "math, science and arts" - arts meaning craft projects!)

If I had *K* to do over again, I would use FIAR and CSMP math. I would do nature walks and let my child draw or teach the use of a camera. I should add that FIAR is nice if you can find the books at the library, or can pick them up cheaply at the thrift store. Some libraries carry FIAR manuals, so it's worth checking.

Oops! Left off a reading program---I would use WRTR or Elizabeth B's Blend Phonics.

:iagree: FIAR is our favorite part. DD asks for it even when we don't have school. We are starting CSMP next year. I wish I had known about it last year.

We're doing K4 this year as my dd was ready but I've registered for her to do K5 next year. Same stuff but just a bit more in depth and getting her really ready for 1st.

This year we're doing for K4 this:

  • HWT Prek
  • MEP Math YR
  • AG Science Astronomy
  • MoH Vol. 1
  • HoP Level K

Next year we're doing for K5 this:

  • HWT K
  • MEP Math Finish YR and begin on Y1
  • Finish AG Science Astronomy
  • Finish MoH Vol. 1
  • Finish HoP Level K, begin Level 1

I'm not sure what to call kindergarten/Pre-K/First grade, etc. Right now, DS is doing MEP Year 1, Progressive Phonics, Explode the Code (starting soon) and Units. I use Homelearning Year by Year and my kids interests to pick topics.

Next year we'll continue with MEP (I really like this program) and PP/ETC but I'm going to add Handwriting without tears. Our units next year will mostly be Geography, Continents/Countries and Habitats - so I guess a study of the World.

The following year, when he would technically be kindergarten (if he went to public school) I plan to stop the Unit studies approach and do History Odyssey and REAL Science Odyssey doing each once or twice a week.

Of course, plans can always change and nothing is ever set in stone. ;)

Our K year this year looked like this:

1st semester:

Last 3 Rod and Staff ABC workbooks (did the first ones for preK last year.)

Reading Bob books (learned beginning phonics w/LOTW for preK last year.)

Rod and Staff arithmetic 1 (1st 60 lessons)

2nd semester:

wrapped up last of the ABC workbooks

Rod and Staff 1st grade reading and phonics (we should finish unit 1 before June for a short summer break.)

Math by mom, using a store workbook as a spine and reviewing what we learned earlier in the year. R&S just got moving too quickly for her. Will pick it back up later.)

Co-op all year:

Kinderbach music

ballet and tap

Dr. Seuss class

Sign Language

extras:

Daisy scouts

Soccer

following along w/sis:

history: SOTW 2

Science: earth and space

read alouds of all kinds of things

My last ker had a different K year, due to the nature of her being a different person, with different needs. Hers was:

Rod and Staff arithmetic 1

reading library books

various unit studies to cover all other topics

copywork on all topics & store handwriting book

The last mo. of K she finished R&S math 1, and began R&S reading and phonics grade 1, unit 2.

We did K this year. For the first half of the year we did:

OPGTR

AAS 1

HWT K

RS A

BFSU (We didn't get to this very often as I was pregnant and tired.)

The Children's Bible

In the second half of the year we have added:

WWE 1

FLL

AAS 2

SSL (DD absolutely loves this!)

MEP 1

We started doing Spanish a little more formally.

And we've made more time for BFSU.

We have another one of those K/1 situations as ds is technically K age this year, but due to some learning difficulties and overall wiggliness, we decided to hold him back and register him for K next year. So, in content areas (history, science) he will be doing 1st grade work, and in skill areas he will be doing K work (reading, handwriting, math).

Bible - Explorer's Beginnings

Reading - OPGTR

Handwriting - HWOT K/1 with StartWrite sheets

Math - RS A

History - SOTW 1

Literature - LCC 1st grade Fairy Tales/Tall Tales

Science - Either Sonlight Science 1, Elemental Science Bio or BFSU (haven't finalized science yet)

Music - Kindermusik classes

Here's my plans for next fall with my youngest (my last kindergartener)

Saxon K phonics

Saxon math K (and right into Saxon 1 if he needs a faster pace)

ARFH K (I would prefer a secular handwriting program but my kids love the border sheets and I like the daily set up)

Sitting in on Science and History with the older 2 kids when he's feeling like it.

I've seen 2nd and 4th grade but what about Kindergarten?

We are simple for K here...

MFW K with ETC Primers (I'll have my 3yo tag along as well)

ARFH K

MUS Primer

And tagging along with big bro/sis..And the ARFH and ETC are because he wanted to do them. :)

This was exactly my plan before finding Phonics Road. My lil guy just turned 3, so I have some time to figure it out.:) I am thinking Family Math, Introduction to Phonics Road, some things from First Language Lessons (not the grammar) and I CAN books at this point. Edited by Lovedtodeath

I'm doing a relaxed year and a half K with my youngest.

Math: MEP and Miquon

Reading: Phonics Pathways

Handwriting: Getty-Dubay

Memory work: shortish poems, and DD the Elder's poems by osmosis (it was something of a pleasant shock to me to hear my mildly articulation delayed DD recite the entire "A Visit From St. Nicolas" a few months ago)

Plus:

  • Lots of reading aloud (CM inspired
  • Units here and there according to interest.
  • Listening to DD the Elder's lessons.

Other ways aren't so cute, since many of the books use different definitions of words.... "Mom I'm so excited we are going to XYZ I just can't stop ejaculating about it. "

Ha! Don't read Pollyanna. She ejaculates so much you want to choke her. I normally like unabridged books, but that one screams for abridging.

For K I am thinking about using

The Writing Road to Reading

Readings from the Bible

homemade math games and lessons

We've done:

Sonlight core K (history, geography, read-alouds)

Sonlight Science K

Sonlight LA K

Sonlight Readers K/Readers 1

HWT K

ETC 1-1.5

random art/music/sports

and

Singapore Earlybird, MUS Primer, A Beka K Math and Singapore Essentials :p

(I swear I didn't plan to do this - I seriously though Earlybird and part of MUS Primer would get us through the year but he LOVES math and thinks it's a game)

:001_smile: Wow! That post just made me smile! My dd5 was born with a cleft lip/cleft palate, and was diagnosed with an articulation disorder, although she's improved a great deal. Anyway, I hadn't thought about the memory work/recitation until I read this. After reading your post, I am thinking that it will be challenging, but quite rewarding. Thanks!

My youngest will be K age next year.

I'm going to send her to another year of preschool. I'll register her as a kindergartener, and academically she is ready, but socially/ developmentally she would benefit from another year of preschool. Her teacher is phenomenal, was a public school kindergarten teacher and reading specialist but left bc it was becoming developmentally inappropriate, and there will be at least four kids who will be five at the beginning of the year. So I think that will be our main "program."

I will do reading and math at home, though. I think we'll finish up Headsprout and then use ABeCeDarian to practice decoding, along with reading real books. We'll do Singapore EarlyBird and Miquon for math. Might add in RS A. Depending, I may do a little handwriting or R&S preschool books, but I don't want to push too much.

Well my K4 has changed through the year to adapt for ds interests and my energy level (baby due in June!)

K4 - Four days a week

Bible Reading - outloud reading practice ~5 minutes

Recitation - selected poems or sections of scripture

OPGtTR - Almost done! Should finish up before ds3!

Math - Beginning Ray's - started with Saxon K, but discovered that sprial is not for us :tongue_smilie:

Science - Play and Find out about Science - I was spliting time with math, two days math and two days science, but interest and lack of sleep has put science on the shelf for now.

Spelling Workout - Just started this week!

Misc. Workbook - Everything for Early Learning Preschool - ds likes the pictures and it gives good practice with scissors :001_smile:

Prima Latina - Just started this week. I kept finding ds singing made up songs and him saying they were Latin. So why not go with his interests! ;)

Out loud practice reading and out loud reading by me! :D

K5 - Four days a week, basically the same as K4

Bible Reading

Recitation

Math

Spelling Workout

Try to get Science back in for a couple of days

Drawing with Children

Prima Latina

Out Loud reading and more books!

Possibly some FIAR this summer after ds3! :grouphug:

My Ker ended up doing

Lots and lots of read alouds- a mix of picture books and chapter books, many SL Core K selections, many library books he picked.

Lots and lots of books for him to read, again he picked from the library and our books at home. He likes to read in bed at night and during quiet time.

RightStart A here and there, Miquon orange and red here and there. We played store a lot too which he loves for whatever reason, he used his cash register and practiced giving me change.

Lots of crafts and art (Ed Emberley is his favorite for art), science experiments, drawing pictures and writing notes to mail to family members, and did I mention lots of science experiments?

Phonics review since he learned to read on his own without it.

Basically, I just followed his lead.

He is my dream hsing kid- interested in everything and loves to learn. I feel like a lot was accomplished but it wasn't very structured. He's doing 1st grade work now without a problem, I think the WTM's relaxed K recs are right on. Get them reading and just have fun. :001_smile:
