I'm starting to look for ideas for next fall and would love to hear what others are doing(or have already done). We're using TOG1/SOTW1 now-a 5th with a 1st grader. I'm thinking of TOG2/SOTW2 for 6th/2nd grades. We're Catholic so I have our catechism books picked out. Finish up Singapore Math and then what? Maybe Science Explorer books? No latin but we need to add spanish. We've tried several but nothing stuck with us. Help

My 12yo is a 6th grader this year. His core, which takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours per day:

- Singapore Math 6, alternating days with Kinetic Books Online Algebra I, my crazy idea that seems to be working.

- Latin Book One

- Piano study

- History Odyssey Middle Ages 2 for world history & writing skills

- Classical Composition, a progymnasmata approach, on days/weeks that HO is light on writing

- Literature from LCC, and the HO assigned books

Additional stuff, weekly or irregular, that doesn't feel like school/lesson time:

- Bible Study Guide for All Ages, intermittently

- Nature study & Boy Scouts activities

- Chess club

- Casual exploration of art, architecture, craft/handiwork, music, sciences, geography, languages, etc.

My youngest will be in 6th next year. She is not a strong reader although she has shown great improvement this year!

She will finish AO Year 3 and begin Year 4 and she'll do much of the reading on her own (covers History, Bible, Geography, Literature, Fine Arts & more)

Math - Key to Fractions, Decimals, Percents & begin Basic College Math

Latin - Lively Latin

Science - not sure (she did health this year at her request, first time I have ever done "health", lol)

Writing - IEW

SWR, maybe something light for extra grammar, piano if we find find a decent teacher, swimming 4x week

We will also continue to do Main Lesson books as often as possible as she has really loved doing them this year.

WOW! Is everyone else's 11 and 12 yo working this long? We do not spend anywhere near that on school.

No, we don't. My 6th grader is finished most work by lunch, then we have one hour quiet time in the afternoon when the kids read their literature, free-read, write in personal journal etc. It's one of my aims this year to complete most school work in the mornings, then have time for life, crafts we want to do etc in the afternoons.

We just finished the Mary Fabian Windeat book on St. Benedict, which was terrific.
