  1. It sounds like what is in your power to adjust are the history assignments. If you feel it is too much, then I would try doing every other history writing project. That would give him an additional week for each essay. See if that keeps up the challenge, but doesn't over stress him. If it's still too much, then do every third history assignment and give three weeks. There is a balance of quantity vs. quality. It's tough trying to get to that sweet spot. Keep in mind that in college there is quantity and quality. So, if I were in your shoes, I would focus on quality, and build up the quantity over the next 2 1/2 years. HTH!
  2. I don't have all the answers, but I would think that Piano with Performance would show that it's not just piano lessons and practice. I am requiring 3 performances as part of the grading criteria for the course "Piano with Performance." Those three performance can be anywhere. Once ds played for his piano teacher's 6th grade class. He has played for church functions, and worship, also. Once ds has completed the 3 performance requirement, I count all worship service practice (with the worship team, not on his own), and playing for worship services as community service. So, yes, I think you are on the right track. Just note, that we do not double dip. If I count something for community service, I do not count that performance or time as part of the piano course. It's always one or the other. I hope this helps.
  3. Here is how I am doing it: 9th grade: Intermediate Piano I .5 credit 10th grade: Intermediate Piano II .5 credit Time spent practicing/playing for church worship services is counted as volunteer service and will be listed as such on the transcript. This time is NOT included in the academic credit above, so there is no double dipping. 11th grade and 12th grade: All piano practice/lessons will be counted as extracurricular. Worship Team practice/playing will continued to be tracked as volunteer community service time. No academic credit given for piano these two years. Ds will have enough Fine Arts credit with the Piano courses above, and with the drama class he took, by the end of 10th grade. I don't want it to appear I'm padding the transcript, and the above seems a fair assessment of what he's doing, while acknowledging all that he is doing/has done. HTH.
  4. Is there anyone who has used this online (or with the DVD's) that can answer some questions about it? I am considering doing it the first semester and doing TOG literature the second semester. Do the videos actually teach how to write, or do they just give the writing assignments? We currently use IEW materials, but I'm not moving through assignments fast enough. I was thinking that doing the BJU the first semester would ensure we covered an adequate amount of writing (plus do some SAT writing prep on the side), and that we would complete grammar instruction before taking the SAT. My son has completed grammar through R&S 7, plus a couple of chapters in 8, so I'm hopeful the grammar won't be too difficult for him.
  5. If you don't get an answer here in the next couple of days, I would call BJU's customer service. They might be closed for a few more days, but I'd call as soon as they open again. Their customer service is really good. I would explain your situation, ask your question, and see what they say. Just an idea.... :)
  6. Got them today!! No more stalking the postal worker. :hurray: Hope everyone else waiting gets theirs soon! :)
  7. O.k., I feel better knowing that we may not have been forgotten. :) We'll just keep circling the mailbox till it comes, I guess. Thanks!
  8. We didn't get ours yet, but a friend who tested at the same school got hers last week. Is it too early to think we've been forgotton? We are still waiting....and haunting the mailbox. :confused1:
  9. The schools on are radar are looking for 1 year of World History (1 credit), 1 year of American History (1 credit), 1 semester of Government and one semester of Economics (.5 credit each). That is the same as what the state requires for high school. There is nothing more specific on the college websites than what I've listed. Maybe I'm overthinking it. It seems obvious to me we will more than meet the above requirements. I guess I worry what seems obvious to me won't be so obvious to others.
  10. I'm trying to figure out another way of saying it: The fear that the college will not feel we had completed the high school requirements for American History because it does not appear to be a comprehensive (complete) study when it says basically, just the 1800's and 1900's. Am I making myself more clear? Does that help?
  11. Besides the website that Janice listed, the curriculum does have that stuff stated on the Loom CD which comes with your curriculum.
  12. I looked up the TOG titles and they suggest the following if you are splitting the World and American History Credit: Yr 3 Western Civ. 3 .5 cr. U.S. History .5 cr. Yr 4: Western Civ. 4 .5 cr. U.S. History II .5 cr. I know I want to keep these credits separate to show that both World and American History were covered for one full credit each. My only fear in putting American History: 1800's or 1900's, was that it would look like we had not studied all of American History. But, in fact, we really did during ds's 9th grade year when we studied Yr 2 Units 3 & 4. I didn't want to split the credits for that year because it would be less than a 1/2 credit, and I don't want to have 1/4 credits on the transcript. So what if I use both of your suggestions as follows: 9th Medieval through Enlightenment History .5 cr. (TOG Yr 2 Units 3-4) Cultural Geography .5 cr. 10th Word History:19th Century .5 cr. (TOG Yr 3 all) American History: 19th Century .5 cr. (TOG Yr 3 all) or U.S. History I Government .5 cr. Proposed: 11th Economics .5 cr 12th World History: 20th Century .5 cr (TOG Yr 4 all) American History: 20th Century .5 cr (TOG Yr 4 all) or U.S. History II Maybe the specific world history titles would be best with the U.S. History I and II titles.....?
  13. Here is Ds's partial transcript so far: 9th World History: 1500-1800 .5 cr. (TOG Yr 2 Units 3-4) Culteral Geography .5 cr. 10th Word History I .5 cr. (TOG Yr 3 all) American History I .5 cr. (TOG Yr 3 all) Government .5 cr. Proposed: 11th Economics .5 cr 12th World History II .5 cr (TOG Yr 4 all) American History II .5 cr (TOG Yr 4 all) Do the TOG course titles look O.K.? Our state requires 1 credit American and 1 credit World History, also Government and Economics. Does it look o.k. to have the two years of World and American History spaced with the junior year inbetween? Ds will have too full a load to start taking classes at the CC next year unless I cut something (and I don't want it to be spanish 3 which he needs). I finally came to realize that real life has hit the curriculum dream of completing TOG Yr 1 in high school along with the other years listed above, and it's the only thing I can see to sacrifice right now and still meet requirements. Ds is currently interested in science, so we'll need to do science both the junior and senior year. So, does this look o.k.? Does it throw out any red flags for colleges?
  14. We have the chemistry DVD and we really like being able to see the experiments being performed. We usually do ours after we watch the video. Sometimes our labs don't work out, and it has been nice to see how it was supposed to have turned out and also, to see where we made our mistake. Sometimes, alternate ways of performing the experiment have been given, and more information about difficult to find chemicals. That has been very helpful to me.
