SparklyUnicorn
I'm so bummed. I eat the stuff like it is going out of style. Cheapest I could find it was $5 for one head! : (
kewb
Yep. I have been priced out. For awhile the price had dropped down to a reasonable cost. Now it is out of rotation. Lettuce, too, has gotten crazy.
Annie G
Same here! I wonder what's going on. Wonder if all the people eating riced cauliflower are driving up the price.
SparklyUnicorn
Aldi flat out doesn't have any. I did manage to get several bags of frozen. That works for some stuff I like it use it for, but not everything.

fairfarmhand
Yeah, I have to have a head of lettuce for a play next week. It's gonna set the budget back a little!
SparklyUnicorn
Wow. are you eating it cooked or raw? If you are eating it cooked, frozen might be the way to go right now. It is expensive though, I pretty much never buy it fresh unless I can get it on a good sale. I try to never pay more than $2.50 for a head. Which is why I haven't had any in a while. Mostly frozen works out. Especially now that they sell it riced. But there are some things it's not so great for. The store I usually go to wanted $7.99. KungFuPanda
How hard is it to grow? I've never grown cauliflower. My cabbage and kale looks healthy, but I'm failing at broccoli.
Crimson Wife
Hmm, I wonder if this is regional. I mostly buy frozen since I tend to use it in stir fries but if I look at the local Safeway's grocery delivery site, it's telling me $4.49 and that seems about typical for when it's not on sale (sale price is usually $3.99). SparklyUnicorn
How hard is it to grow? I've never grown cauliflower. My cabbage and kale looks healthy, but I'm failing at broccoli. I've never successfully grown it. We might just not have very good growing conditions for it though. We have trouble growing a lot of things because the growing season here is quite short. I usually get it for under $3 when not on sale (Aldi). Regular store maybe $3.99. Compared with other stores $5 was a bargain. But ouch. I buy at least 2 a week normally. Not that it's completely out of the question price wise, but the price jump took me by surprise. The 1# bags of frozen were $1.23 regular price. I had to try 3 stores to find frozen though. KungFuPanda
Now I want veggie korma with lots of cauliflower. If I buy the frozen does it still count as participating in the Freezer Challenge thread?
solascriptura
Aldi has it for 2.99. Not sure if that's across the USA.
SparklyUnicorn
Aldi has it for 2.99. Not sure if that's across the USA. Last 2 weeks I've gone and looked several times and they had none. They have a sign on the door talking about shortages due to weather. I'll look again though. They are just up the street from me.

KungFuPanda
$5 is good! I paid $7 a few weeks ago. I don't think I've ever needed cauliflower enough to pay $7, or even $5, for it.
foxbridgeacademy
Huh, depending on the store it's still fairly cheap here in Middle Tn. But the same thing happened last year. My sister couldn't get it or it was tiny, moldy and cost $3+ per pound and we had it for $1.99 per head. I'm about the only one who eats it here so we don't buy very often and we always buy fresh.... I think frozen is gross.

mamaraby
Cauliflower was previously super duper expensive last year. I'm not in the market for cauliflower, but I really want an avocado, but I'm not paying $1ea when I used to get them for half that. My rice bowl has been sad for months now. I can get a tiny, sad avocado at Walmart for $1 but if I want a nice sized, not bruised one I have to pay upward of $1.75 each. Cinco de Mayo is coming and they'll be cheap...I can't wait!!!

They often are as hard as a rock. I can't vouch for size, though, because I gave up looking at them until the price comes down. And if it never does? Well, I saw a recipe for "guacamole" made out of frozen peas. I am tempted.
heartlikealion
Dh bought a giant bag of riced cauliflower at Sam's recently. Inside were individual bags. I think it's a new item. We had previously bought it at Walmart. I don't know how much he paid, though.
Arcadia
My local Trader Joe's is selling a head of cauliflower for $1.99 when we went there on our way home. I don't know how heavy they are but they are about medium size so maybe 2lbs each.
Tap
Do you have any restaurant produce supply companies in your area? If you eat that much you can probably use a case in a reasonable amount of time. A restaurant supply may let you buy it as long as you by a case. Ausmumof3
$5 head is perfectly normal here. Best in peak season might get to $3. And I probably wouldn't mind so much if I didn't know only a small portion of that is getting to the growers...
J-rap
I love cauliflower too, though I haven't gotten it for awhile. I'm going to check on prices here tomorrow. Guest
We went to one store the other day and the cauliflower was literally the size of a softball.....$5! We went to a smaller chain and got it for 2.99 and three times the size. Lots of stores don't even carry it.
