Onceuponatime Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 (edited) Could you recommend any modern artists that do folk/acoustic natural style music? I like ballads and happy/feel good songs. I don't like heavy beats, techno sound, six word repetitions, or break up songs. I did some searching on YouTube and kind of like Jason Mraz. Any other suggestions for someone who still loves Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Simon and Garfunkel? Edited July 9, 2016 by Onceuponatime 1 Quote
Onceuponatime Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 Andy Grammar? I just listened to a couple of songs. Fun! Thanks. Quote

SparklyUnicorn Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 He looks like a baby! How is that voice coming out of his mouth?! I think he is adorable. Almost jail bait, but adorable. LOL 1 Quote
SparklyUnicorn Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 A bit more "poppish", but I also love John Newman. Dreamy eye candy. Quote
Onceuponatime Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 (edited) I think I like George Ezra better than John Newman. 😊 Edited July 9, 2016 by Onceuponatime 2 Quote

fdrinca Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 I had four or five recommendations but then kept remembering you said feel-good, no break-up songs... Try listening to The GO! Team's album Thunder, Lightening, Strike. Upbeat with a vintage sound. 1 Quote
marbel Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 (edited) My daughter (and I, but she is the young one) recommends: Fitz and the Tantrums Kodaline Andrew McMahon Cage the Elephant Bastille (as has been mentioned) She said some of their songs are sad, but most are pretty upbeat. One of the best things about having teens is the exposure to new music. Of course a person can find new music on their own, but it's easier with a teen in the house. DragonFaerie Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 (edited) How about Keith Harkin? He's a member of Celtic Thunder but also does a lot of solo stuff. I don't know how to embed the video, but this is one of my favorite songs from Keith: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2T3Tra40Ho Edited July 10, 2016 by DragonFaerie Quote
Bluegoat Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 Some I like: Old Man Luedecke https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIEEDYowZhA Ben Caplan (some are broken heart sons, others not so much, and some are more folky and less jazzy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioMLsYfJqo0 Jill Barber https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guVjJC9A_hM Quote

SemiSweet Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Train - we love Hey Soul Sister, Save Me San Francisco, Meet Virginia, pretty much all of their stuff, we are seeing them in concert for the third time next month, and we used a few of their songs in our wedding. I LOVE Andy Grammer, he is front lining for the concert next month and I cannot wait. Definitely love some of the other suggestions. Quote
BrittanyM Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 I love Charlie Puth but I don't think he fits your requirements perfectly. I also like Ed Sheeran Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

Hilltopmom Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Do you have a local folk/ acoustic music scene? We have quite a few locals here that play that sort of thing at coffee houses & summer park concerts. I listen to those & then mostly my faves from decades ago:) Pandora through our Roku has all sorts of "folk" style channels too. Quote
klmama Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I wonder if you'd like the Zac Brown Band? It's kind of a Jimmy-Buffett-meets-the-Eagles type of sound. 2 Quote
Shred Betty Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 (edited) I love Simon and Garkunkel. This came to mind: it's poetry too like sounds of silence. Give it a go! If you like it quote me back I want to comment on it but won't till after you listen first - "modern bias." Edited July 20, 2016 by Shred Betty Quote
LostSurprise Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Any winners Onceuponatime? Sometimes feedback helps with suggestions. Oh, and The Avett Brothers. Can't believe I left them off the list. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5CMDmxtpbc 3 Quote
yoyoma Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I have to second so many of the recommendations here. Many that I listen to and was nodding. Many I look forward to checking out. One I didn't see mentioned that jumps through jazz/folk/pop in one fell swoop is Andrew Bird His music changes by album though...if you don't like one try another. He likes to experiment :-) 1 Quote
Jen in NY Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I love so many that are already posted... and the Punch Brothers! Start at about 2:15 of you want to skip the birthday cake: 2 Quote
helena Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 Any winners Onceuponatime? Sometimes feedback helps with suggestions. Oh, and The Avett Brothers. Can't believe I left them off the list. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5CMDmxtpbc I saw The Avett Brothers play years ago and thought they sounded great. It's not exactly my genre, but I love bands that pull out all kinds of weird instruments. Has anyone mentioned The Decembrists? My 17yo loves them. We saw them at the Hollywood Bowl, perfect outdoor band for a beautiful evening. :) Gotta love the accordion! 2 Quote
Kareni Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 Could you recommend any modern artists that do folk/acoustic natural style music? I don't know how one would define the style of these artists, but I like them. One caveat: I don't really listen to the lyrics so I can't speak to the content. October Project Happy Rhodes (she has an incredible range) Regards, Kareni 1 Quote
Onceuponatime Posted July 23, 2016 Author Posted July 23, 2016 (edited) I didn't realize that this thread was revived. My favorites so far are still Andy Grammer and Jason Mraz. I'm happy to check out some more groups. Thanks for the added input. This is the kind of song I really like: Edited July 23, 2016 by Onceuponatime Quote

PeacefulChaos Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 How about Little Suns? Ah, a song from a favorite show! ;) OP, I am sorry, I didn't mean to hijack. :) I don't have any suggestions for you as I'm a huge fan of hip hop, rap, and heavy bass in anything lol. :) Glad you are getting lots of responses from others who know more of the genre you are looking for! 1 Quote
