BrookValley.
My husband and I don't usually discuss baby names with others--even family--before the baby is born, for various reasons, but we need an outside opinion on some choices. I figure it won't exactly be breaking our "rule" if I ask in the relative anonyimity of the Hive. ;) What are your opinions on two siblings named Silas and Elias? Brutally honest is quite ok here, you won't hurt my feelings. We like both names, it's a question of how they go together. Thanks!
k2bdeutmeyer
Too similar for my taste, however, I LOVE both names :)
Annie
I like both names, but I think they sound odd together. I did a double take when reading them. Plus, I know I would always be calling one name when I meant the other.
Parrothead
I don't think I'd go for rhyming names.
chickenpatty
I love both names, but not together. How about Silas & Elijah? I think our twins are going to be Seth & Elijah (Eli). Dh wouldn't go for Silas, even though it was one of my picks.
BrookValley.
Thank you for confirming what we really already knew, but needed to hear from others! So, we already have an Elias, so obviously that one isn't up for discussion. But we need a new baby boy name, and we both love Silas--my husband especially. I had the same reaction as everyone else so far. They just don't work together! But my husband is still clinging to the hope that somehow it could work. I think we need to move on, but we are having a really hard time coming up with other names we like, and time is running out! Chickenpatty, I love Seth and Elijah! I.Dup.
I think they are both great names, and not too similar. They won't always be called together their entire lives!
Eagle
Silas is a form of Silvanus (sil VAHN us). Maybe that would work? I think it works well with Elias.
Parrothead
Silvanus is the Latin form of Silas if that helps. Judas Barsabbas was Silas' buddy. Perhaps you Jude would work. Biblical S names that might work: Samuel Saul Seth Simon Stephen By chance is there a child between Elias and the would be Silas? I think you'd be okay if there was a child between them. happi duck
In our family we accidentally ended up with confusing names and people deal with it. Maybe choose a middle name that you could use if it gets too crazy.

JumpyTheFrog
In my opinion, don't make it hard for other people to confuse your kids...especially since they may end up looking like each other. You can use Silas as a middle name.
Ellie
Oh, no, I would NOT do that!
Hoot
I LOVE both names... but not together. ETA: Oh wait, I don't know why I was under the impression you were talking about twins. Since they're siblings but not twins, I don't think it would be that bad. Perhaps you could use a shortened version of one or the other - Eli or Si. I have a friend with a Silas who always calls him Si.
Miss Marple
I like both. I can see, though, that Elias might be shortened to Eli in which case Silas and Eli would be fine. If you want Elias without the nickname, it might be a little too much with Silas.

MeaganS
According to BabyNameWizard, people who named their sons Elias also had sons named: asher, benjamin, david, gabriel, isaac, isaiah, james, jude, liam, lucas, nathaniel, neil, noah, oliver, own, silas, and simon For the record, I wouldn't do both Silas and Elias. Too close. Sorry.

BigMamaBird
Personally I don't care for rhyming names. I think both those names are very nice, strong names and wouldn't bat an eye if I heard about two brothers named that. But it wouldn't be for me. besroma
I think most are thinking you are trying to name twins. I love both names. I do think that they are similar enough that people really have to think when they are calling one or the other. Also, they might mispronounce Elias, as they could pronounce it "Ee-lye-us" or "Elli-us." I am not sure if you already have a child with one of the names, but other possibilities (in addition to those already suggested) could be Lucas or Elisha. Joyofsixreboot
I like them together but all three of my boys have names that end in -er so I don't mind the sounds similar thing.
LibraryLover
I think Elias might be currently less trendy. Who knows? Give your child a name you love. Things change. I have a child with an anceint/trendy name. However, it suits my child, and has family links. I prefer traditional names, but I also know it's annoying to have 3 friends of the same age with the same name.
BrookValley.
Thanks, everyone! To clarify: no, no twins--just trying to name a singleton. So siblings, yes, but not twins. I already have an Elias. No, there are no other siblings between the two. I love the name Silas, and it would be my first choice--IF I didn't have an Elias. I think it is too close, too rhyming, too confusing. My husband, however, is holding out hope a little longer than I can. Poor guy. This whole naming business is hard! A funny (maybe not so funny to me) story about the name Ezra. I also love Ezra, and at this point it would probably be my first choice. However--and here's one reason why I won't share names we are considering even with my own mother--my mom came in one evening about a week ago all full of bluster. You'd have to know her, but she's, well, fiesty, and she thinks I don't share names just to irk her (not true. I have far better things to worry about). Well, it must have been on her mind, because she barged in completely out of the blue and said, with a look on her face like she'd tasted something awful, "You're not gonna name this baby something like...Ezra, are you?" I was almost speechless. Almost. My reply isn't fit for public consumption, but here's hoping she keeps her opinions to herself from now on! Have you seen nymbler.com? You can put in names that you like as inspirations and it will give you other suggestions based on those. Using just Silas and Elias, a few that came up were... Simeon Ezra (I actually know a family with Silas & Ezra!) Julian Noah Barnaby Dominic Ezekiel If you go to the site you can put in more names that you like (girl names as well), so you can get recommendations more tailored to your tastes. (By the way, this is my first post here, so hi everyone! I just love names. :)) mmeblue, thanks for making your first post on my thread--and thanks a bunch for the suggestions and website! besroma
I love the name Ezra! It goes nicely with Elias. If you love it, name him Ezra. It will grow on your mom. Although I would be bothered if my mom said something similar, I would not allow it to keep me from naming my child what I wanted to. I am sorry she said that, but I would do my best to put it as far back in my memory as possible and enjoy naming my baby my favorite name. MicheleinMN
If you like Silas and your dh likes Silas, then maybe Silas is the perfect name. You could call Elias Eli or just go with Elias and Silas. But I love the name Silas and wish we had named our Elijah Elias instead. We call him EJ and that works too. :)

Matryoshka
Like them both, but please not together. Growing up, we knew a family with two kids Caleb and Abel. Both of those kids were always called Cable (and not on purpose - your brain always muddled them and it came out that way). I think you'd end up with Salius. ;)
LostSurprise
I love Elias. If I could turn back time at least one of my children would be named after my brothers (Elias David). Silas is a nice name too. I would not name siblings names that rhyme or near rhyme.

Georgiana Daniels
If you both like the name Silas--go with it! If they were twins it would be more an issue.
Georgiana Daniels
PS. Lots of parents have kids whose names have similar qualities...all start with the same letter or end with the same sound. Or they do other things that are cute/funny, like going up the alphabet. As long as you don't give a child a name that makes them a target for teasing, it's good! Hoot
What about Cyrus? It's similar to Silas, but I think it's just different enough that it doesn't quite feel so much like Elias.
