ktgrok
For some reason that seems wrong to me...like too much caffiene or something? But my daughter's birthday is Bob the Builder themed, and I want to make a cake depicting a contsuction theme. Using chocolate icing would be easier, to depict a muddy construction site. But if you think people won't want their little kids eating it I can do a white buttercream and use chocolate cookie crumbs in piles for piles of rubble, etc.
bagel270
I think people will expect sugar at a party. Just cut the pieces small, and let moms ok seconds.
Laurie4b
Wouldn't think twice about chocolate icing. Chocolate has very little caffeine, really, and I don't see the difference between chocolate icing and chocolate cookie crumbs. I say go for the chocolate icing! Jean in Newcastle
It wouldn't have even occurred to me to limit chocolate icing - except for the idea of a bunch of toddlers on a sugar high!
RanchGirl
If the birthday child likes chocolate, I say go for it! I agree with a pp to cut small pieces, as I'm sure you would with any cake for 2 year olds. :)
Pippen
Sugar is sugar, but if the guests mainly are other two year olds I'd be more concerned about getting the chocolate icing out of clothes.

For my son's 2nd b-day I did a construction theme too! I tinted buttercream to a sand color and used crushed graham crackers on top. The cake itself was chocolate. Cassy
My kids adore chocolate, and I've always been happy for them to eat it, in moderation. We have always had tons of homemade chocolate brownies slathered with chocolate icing at birthday parties here. The only complaint I ever had was from a dad who thought they were too good for kids - I let him have one :D. Best wishes, have a fun time! Truscifi
I think it would be fine. It sounds like it will be a cute cake. :)

NanceXToo
Wouldn't bother me. It's a birthday!
In the Rain
It wouldn't bother me. I'd rather see chocolate icing than bright artificially colored icing.
twoxcell
I highly doubt any store bought chocolate icing has much caffeine considering there is very little chocolate in it. It would have never occurred to me to limit chocolate because of caffeine.
chepyl
No big deal, go for chocolate!
Maus
I wouldn't think twice about it. If you have time and you don't know the allergy status of the guests, you might make one batch of vanilla cupcakes with a little dab of non-dairy topping on them. There is naturally occurring caffeine in cocoa, but by the time you add everything that turns cocoa into chocolate, it isn't particularly significant. NatYoung17
It wouldn't have even occurred to me to limit chocolate icing - except for the idea of a bunch of toddlers on a sugar high! :iagree: Chocolate frosting has hardly any caffeine in it, so I wouldn't worry about it. swellmomma
Chocolate icing is a must have imo especially for areas that need dark icing (much easier to get a good black icing when tinting chocolate icing than tinting white. My kids love chocolate icing (and we even had it on 1st birthday cakes), and licking the spoon is half the fun while making it so even more chocolate icing for my kids. I have never heard anyone being worried about using chocolate icing. It is a birthday cake, make it delicious and just serve small peices if you are worried about it. Catwoman
Perhaps the more important question here is... How could you not use chocolate icing on the cake? ;) :D

ktgrok
Awesome! I don't want to use a bunch of dye and food coloring, so chocolate it is! I'm really excited about it!
ScoutTN
Sure! My kids have had chocolate buttercream icing on all their birthday cakes! Not an everyday treat, but birthdays are special so the food should be too!:D
SweetMissMagnolia
wouldn't worry about it as long as there were no allergy issues....seems fine for me---

Harriet Vane
BTW, I'm pretty sure that chocolate does not generally have caffeine in it. Actually, it does. The higher the cocoa content, the higher the caffeine.
