  1. Thank you, @Robin M As others have said, I've enjoyed this thread over the years, and appreciate your work keeping it going. I'll try to remember to pop in over at your blog in the future. Reviewing my year, the book most likely to stick with me from this year is the one I just read, "The Forever Witness." The most fun book I read was probably "The Route 66 Adventure Handbook," made more fun by getting to head out and see what he was talking about. I enjoyed finding two new series in the Hamish books and the Chet and Bernie books. My reading goals for the new year relate to my hope to return to genealogy as a semi-career, so I have a long list of "professional development" books to track down. DNA genealogy wasn't a thing when I was last researching for others. For fun, I do have a copy of the 5th Asperger's Mystery, "The Question of the Dead Mistress" by E.J. Copperman waiting until I get through my stack of almost-due library books. It's the only one I haven't read yet. I hope the author continues the series. 69. "The Forever Witness: How DNA and Genealogy Solved a Cold Case Double Murder" by Edward Humes. Fascinating, and a very readable writing style. I read it all in one long all-day-can't-put-it-down sitting. 68. "Un-Jobbing: The Adult Liberation Handbook" by Michael Fogler. Short book, sort of a cross between "Teenage Liberation Handbook" and "Your Money or Your Life." Mindful, frugal living. 67. "Finding Your Roots" by Henry Louis Gates. Based on the first season or so of his show. 66. "Genealogy Standards" by the Board for Certification of Genealogists. 65. 2. So, Duolingo just decided to switch to a linear model. You can no longer choose the story tab -- the stories are integrated into the path. You can no longer choose which topic to learn next inside each level. I am not happy. I was focusing on comprehension myself by repeating each story until I actually understood the conversations without having to translate every word in my head. And I will never be able to get my kids to stick to it. They've cried their way through Waterford's Upstart, K12, and BYUonline because they were locked into the learning path and couldn't go back to the parts they enjoyed. I sent an email to Duolingo at their "support" address, but they announced this change as being directed by their "learning experts," so I don't have my hopes up.
  3. Busy, but crazy fun summer! We headed out on a road trip, only to test positive for CoVid (despite immunization); drove home, and recovered; left DH home and headed back out on our road trip, but minus about half our travel budget! Enjoyed St. Paul, then dropped down to Chicago and drove Route 66 from Chicago to Albuquerque, where we realized we had enough gas money to make it home, but not to finish the Route. 66. "Genealogy Standards" by the Board for Certification of Genealogists. Dry, but need-to-know information for those who want to be professional genealogists. 65. "The Lost Family: How DNA Testing Is Upending Who We Are" by Libby Copeland. Fascinating stories about family secrets, and a good discussion about the ethics and legality of genealogical DNA testing. 64. "Amazon FBA Mastery Coaching" by Jonathan Fitzpatrick. Meh. Nothing that applied to what we were wanting to learn. 63. "Route 66 Adventure Handbook" by Drew Knowles. We really liked this one, and consulted it daily on our Route 66 trip. 62. "From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death" by Caitlyn Daugherty. (Audible) Also on our roadtrip. Besides me, really only DD18 liked it. 61. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" by JK Rowling. (Audible) These have become our default road trip stories! This time, DD12 finally listened to them, instead of to her own device, and despite claiming she still didn't really like them, was always the first one to say, "Can we turn Harry Potter back on?" 60. 4. And, of course, it's not our DVD, it's the library's. Anybody know how to solve this? The car is a 2015 Honda Pilot, if that's pertinent. Google told me to try a piece of tape wrapped around a credit card, but I haven't been able to pull it out that way, either.
  5. Our weather got nice, so we've been trying to enjoy exploring. I haven't read as much. 54. "The Best Hits on Routh 66: 100 Essential Stops on the Mother Road" by Amy Bizzarri. 53. "Travel Route 66: A Guide to the History, Sights, and Destinations Along the Main Street of America" by Jim Hinckley. 52. "Saints at War in the Philippines: Latter-day Saints in WWII Prison Camps" by Michael H. Hyer. I had a great uncle who was at the Battle of Corregidor. He was transported from the prison camp Cabanatuan in the Philippines to the Hoten pow camp in Manchuria (also known as Mukden) via the hellship Tottori Maru. I figured this book would give me a pretty good sense of what his experience was like, though the men featured here went on different ships to different pow camps. 51. 6. I liked it, and it was validating to my personal feelings about what education means. Here's a quote from the book that I saved because I like it so much: "We err fundamentally if we think of education in narrowly instrumental terms -- when we confuse it, in other words, with training. To educate means, literally, to "draw out," to educe from the student something that is already there and whose successful cultivation represents the fulfillment of the highest human good. Education, in this sense, is liberal education -- education not for making a living but for living meaningfully." He chose to alternate between autobiographical snippets of his life as an immigrant, his arguments for the value of "great works" programs, and reflections of the significance of several great works. I thought that worked well.
  7. Well, now! I thought I posted last week. I know I typed it all out. Apparently, I did not actually ever click 'Submit Reply,' so it's all gone! And I turned in everything that was due, too, so I'll have to try to remember! I think this is all of them. 51. 8. Oops, I missed posting the last two weeks. So, this is three weeks worth. Lots of Audible while I work on the computer. I'm going to have to turn to Overdrive to hear the rest of the Hamish MacBeth series. I've been using Audible Plus, which does not have them all. The three physical books by Richard Paul Evans are a trilogy, whose plot features a man who walks the entire length of Route 66. The kids and I are hoping to drive it this summer/fall, so I'm getting in the mood! 39. "Agatha Raisin and the Potted Gardener" by M.C. Beacon. (Audible) 38. 9. Yes! It's written more for children than the other two, but still very good.

  11. Heavy on mysteries this week, but they seem to go hand in hand with genealogy, which is solving mysteries, too! Still liking the Chet & Bernie Mysteries. 12. 12. So far this year, I seem to be listening more than reading. I've been working on a genealogy project that is more data entry than research, so it doesn't require that much concentration. I've been using the time to work through my audible library. 7. "Dog On It" by Spencer Quinn. My mom recommended this mystery series to me. I liked this first one, so I'll go on to the rest. 6. 14. I need to return stacks of books to two different libraries, so I'm sorting through to report on the ones I finished. I have a couple I might let get overdue, since I'm sooo close. 68. "From Fire by Water" by Sohrab Ahmari. 67. "52 Weeks of Family German" by Eileen Mc Aree. Too young for my crew, and despite the pronunciation guides, it would work best if Mom or Dad spoke at least a little German (even just a semester). 66. "Fault Lines" by Voddie T. Baucham, Jr. 65. 15. Didn't there used to be a way to use single spacing? I want to keep the whole list for later reference, but this is getting really long. 64. "Beowulf" A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Gareth Hinds. I'll have DD16 read it. It looks really pretty, but I had a hard time following the plot, and I already know the story of Beowulf, so we'll have to try a non graphic novel after she reads this. 63. "The Manga Guide to the Universe" by Kenji Ishikawa and Kiyoshi Kawabata. I checked out several of these for DD16, who learns best by stories and is dyslexic on top of her 2E diagnosis (ASD and gifted). I try to read what my kids are reading, since written output is challenging for them, so we rely on "big juicy conversations" to judge learning. 62. "Funny, You Don't Look Autistic: A Comedian's Guide to Life on the Spectrum" by Michael McCreary. 61. "The American Dream? A Journey on Route 66" by Shing Yin Khor. Also subtitled "a Graphic Memoir," which it was. A memoir done in graphic novel format. Route 66 is on my bucket list, so I'm trying to sell my kids on the idea. 60. "Utah State Parks" by Jan Bannan. A little out of date, so a couple of our favorite parks have changed status, but I have some new trip ideas. 59. "With All Due Respect" by Nikki R. Haley. 58. "One Vote Away" by Ted Cruz. 57. 17. I'm behind posting again. But I have a couple of photos from the Museum of Clean to go with book 57. I thought it was cool that somehow they have Empress Sisi (Austria)'s toilet in the middle of nowhere, Idaho. And my mom had a Compact Vac, exactly like the one in the photo. That's what I had to use when it was my turn to vacuum, and years before that, I remember trying to ride it like a horse, attacking my brother with it, trying to suck our faces off, etc. 57. "Weekend Makeover" by Don Aslett. We went to his Museum of Clean when we were in Pocatello, Idaho last month. It's been years since I last read one of his books, so I thought I'd see what our library has. 56. "Saints, Vol. 2. (LDS) 55. "Written Out of History" by Mike Lee. 54. 21. Wow! Thanks! Both Gatorland and the Alligator Farm look like the low-key kind of places that would work. St. Augustine also has a National Park, I think, for the oldest settlement. And the ocean.
  22. Anyone from Florida have any experience with zoos, etc. where DD11 could pet/hold an alligator? There seem to be a lot of such places when I google it. Most seem quite expensive. She isn't a large-group person with her ASD and ADHD, so we're hoping for something low-key. We aren't from Florida, so we aren't familiar with the cities there.
  23. Yay! I finished my library books before they are due! 46. "The Rational Bible: Exodus - God, Slavery, and Freedom" by Dennis Prager. Yes, THAT Dennis Prager. I assume his interpretation here is a fairly typical Jewish interpretation, so it was interesting to compare (& occasionally contrast) it to my Latter-day Saint interpretation. 45.
