Which '80s movies have stood the test of time?

Recommended Posts

Thanks to Netflix I've wasted another evening on a cheesy '80s movie. My husband picked Highlander then fell asleep, I stayed up and watched it. :tongue_smilie:

Funny.... I don't remember it being soooooo awful (yes, I was there to see it when it came out).

So, have you recently re-watched an '80s movie and though it was still good/great after all these years?

Dirty Dancing

Pretty in Pink

Back to the Future - my kids LOVE it (but I was shocked and appalled at how much cursing there is in the first one - I didn't remember that AT ALL, and I was close to turning it off when they finally toned it down some).

I find a lot to be inappropriate with '80s movies. I turned Goonies off the last time I tried to put it on for the kids (a few years ago).

I wonder if I should give it another shot? I loved it when it came out.

I agree, Highlander did not age well at all. I also think Breakfast Club made a lot of sense when I was a teenager and now just seems really goofy. Now, I will duck and run for cover. ;)

Real Genius

Better Off Dead

The Last American Virgin ( I like this one because - despite it's many many cheesy moments-it doesn't end like the typical 80's movie)

Sixteen Candles

Pretty in Pink

Was Grease 80's or late 70's? It's still the word.

Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back. (I won't insult them by using their recently invented titles. :tongue_smilie:)

E.T.: The Extraterrestrial

For chick flicks: Overboard and Baby Boom.

Adventures in Babysitting was fun.

It's hard to tell what's still good & what just still invokes giggly memories, like Wayne's World.

Definitely Princess Bride, Karate Kid I and II, Star Wars set, maybe Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Bueller? Bueller?).

Hubby would say Goonies as well. I disagree, but I never liked that one.

We own Killer Klownz from Outer Space but I won't say it's stood the test of time. It's just so bad it's hilarious.

I'm laughing reading some of these titles, I'm not convinced some of these are still watchable.

AprilMay: I recently watched Strange Brew again, I was so bummed. I couldn't get through it! I've seen that movie so many times too...

I was surprised when I watched this last time. It had a lot of cursing, didn't remember that before.

Others:

Terminator

Buckaroo Banzai (silly, goofy but fun!)

And many of those already mentioned.

I agree with a lot of the already posted ones but am surprised that my all-time favorite movie ever is not on the list.

Ghostbusters!

What a great movie.

I loved that one. 'Ray, the next time someone asks you if you are a god you say YES!'

And the Superman movies with Christopher Reeve.

More Dating myself :D :

Gallipoli

Reds

Rain Man

Diner

Drugstore Cowboy (not for the sensitive)

Diva (French)

How To Make Love To A Negro Without Getting Tired (OK, terrible title, but Helena I think you would like this and it has a cool Charlie Parker-loving African Muslim dude character, and is a cool movie and not p@rno--even though it sounds really weird)

More:

Babette's Feast

Fitzgaraldo

sex, lies, and videotape

Once Upon A Time in America

Stranger Than Paradise

Down By Law

Red Sorghum

I didn't realize Babette's Feast was from the 80s! I thought it was much older when I watched it. Interesting.

The 1986 A Little Princess is my favorite version :tongue_smilie:.

Off topic for a sec.

Did you go see Buffalo Springfield? My mom caught them in LA, we took the kids up to Santa Barbara to see them. :001_wub:

Drug Store Cowboy, I forgot about that one. Great Movie..... I think... like I said, when you haven't watched these in a decade or two, it's hard to tell. :001_smile:

O captain, my captain? :tongue_smilie:

I wasn't even conceived for a large part of the 80s so the movies I like from the 80s are all ones that have stood a decent amount of time, lol. I'm surprised at how many I recognize from various lists here.
