2nd Grade Planning?

Anyone want to discuss your plans for 2nd grade for next year?

We'll be doing AAS for spelling, MM 2 for math, La Clase Divertida 2 for Spanish, and Mark Kistler online for drawing. Other than that, I'm not sure. We have been using Climbing to Good English for grammar which I've liked for 1st, but I'm not thrilled with for 2nd. I think my kids will be confused by the dictionary spelling. We've been using MOH for history and going really way too slow. They don't like it. They love science but I'm not into big experiments all the time. We've been using Singapore Early Bird and will finish it but I won't want to move on with that. For reading, we'll probably just read together.

My 2nd grader will be doing:

Saxon Math

Rod & Staff English

WWE & a hodgepodge of stuff with his older brothers (The Writer's Jungle, Sentence Composing, etc.)

Plaid Phonics C (and he might join his brothers for Sequential Spelling)

Finish Song School Latin and move onto something else, though I haven't decided what yet

Evan Moor Daily Handwriting Practice

Sonlight books for reading

He'll also tag along with Sonlight 7 and the Story of Science/Milestones in Science with his brothers.

I think that's it. He takes piano, Judo, and tumbling/power trampoline gymnastics as well. And he'll go to a 1 day a week enrichment program where he gets art & science, along with a bunch of other fun stuff.

Science: Physics ala WTM.. lots of fun experiments and notebooking

Drawing With Children We made it through chapter 2 this year. Will pick up with chapter 3, appreciation using What Your 2nd and 4th Graders Need to Know, crafts and projects throughout the year across the curriculum

Latina Christiana Vocab and memorization only, no workbook

Music Alfred Piano, plus learning about composers and instruments from What Your 2nd and 4th Graders Need to Know. Worksheets from R&S 2 when needed/wanted

My dd goes to a part-time classical school. For 2nd grade there she will use:

Saxon 3 for math

Spalding for spelling and some other LA

Shurley Grammar

IEW (paragraph writing?)

Story of the World for history

Nature Study for science

She will also take a literature class, have daily chapel, and lots of memorywork

At home, we will add in:

Singapore Math 2b/3a

Better Chinese: my first Chinese words (finishing up)

R&S English (to supplement some parts of Shurley and introduce diagramming)

WWE 3

BFSU for science, over the summer and then one Saturday a month over the school year.

We have been using AAS but I'm assuming we won't need it when she starts using Spalding.

We started second grade about a month ago. We're doing

CLE Math 2 and Math Mammoth Math 2 (after much debate and starting and stopping a couple of different math programs).

Rod and Staff 2 for grammar (I really, really like this, and so does DS, but we do modify the sentences quite a bit to make them more fun and less conservative Mennonite ;))

WWE 1-2 for writing (we started 1 last year but haven't finished yet)

Spelling Workout A & B for spelling

Getty-Dubay Book C for handwriting

Prima Latina for Latin (we just do it orally, no writing)

SotW for history, plus library books

R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Life for science

Developing Motor Skills in Art and Artistic Pursuits 1 for art

Recorder and Classics For Kids for music

I've decided to do my own reading program. I'm going to pick out books for DS to read and then come up with discussion/comprehension/vocabulary questions for them.

I think that's what we're doing this year. DH really wants to learn Japanese, and he's considering getting the Learnables program and going through it with DS (who also really wants to learn Japanese--they're both big video game fans), but that will be DH's job, not mine. We seem to be on track to finish science quite early, in which case DH plans on doing some sort of electronics study with DS.

I was just doing some next-year-planning today. :) My current plan for D (2nd grade next year):

Queen's Language Lessons for the Elementary Child

(maybe WWE; maybe SWR)

Lateinische Ausgangsschrift (using a German cursive workbook I ordered from the UK)

Literature correlated w/history, plus lots of free reading & read-alouds

Poetry Memorization (IEW)

Song School Latin followed by Getting Started with Latin

Saxon 1 & 2 (I really prefer MM, but I think she'd do better with Saxon.)

SOTW 1 (She's doing Ancients this year with K12, but I'm going back to having everyone study the same time period next year after this year's madness. Also, we're going to get together with another family for history time next year, and they'll be doing Ancients.)

Science books from library, informal nature observation, gardening, Girl Scout classes

Artistic Pursuits, Dance Mat Typing, Girl Scouts
