  1. I would like to know how much the Mystery of History is used as well as the Story of the World. Do they utilize the worksheets in the MOH? Also, how time consuming is this for your school day?
  2. Is it possible to fast track Teaching Textbooks and finish before the school year to start the next level or is each lesson too time intensive? My daughter is fairly quick in math and would like to speed up, but I've never used these before.
  3. We just moved to Indonesia and we plan on spending Christmas at the beach this year. I am so excited about this. It may just be a new tradition!
  4. I haven't tried Winter Promise LA since they've re-worked some things. How are the new programs working? Are they sufficent in reading and grammar, or do you have to supplement? How are the exclusive readers in the lower grades? Do you like the upper grades? OK, I think that's enough questions for now! Thanks! :confused1:
  5. :iagree: My mom does the same thing! I can't understand why she doesn't just leave it and call back later, but she HAS to answer the thing. I get that reply a LOT! LOL
  6. My 8 yo DS was very similar! I hated doing spelling with him and started looking for other things. I found 2 things that I just LOVE! The first was the Sequential Spelling DVD. He can sit and do his spelling every day without me and I've been surprised how much is sticking. The second thing I started using for writing is Writing Tales. This has been great because it helps with the spelling, reading, writing, vocabulary and parts of speech. It was a little daunting at first because the student is required to write stories. My ds couldn't put a few sentences together when we first started. I didn't expect a lot and we did all the corrections together. I just required the main points. He is writing 1-2 pages on his own now! Spelling is still not great, but it has improved, and I am hopeful for the future! Just remember! It is not your fault and you are NOT a failure. If anything, you are a saint to spend the time and effort it takes to keep your child from being left behind! (But I totally understand how you feel!) We actually decided to keep my ds back a year in school and it was the BEST thing we could have done for him. It took a lot of pressure off us and him. He finally "caught up" so to speak! Good Luck!
  7. This is an interesting topic. I have one child who will try anything at least once and one child who "says" she doesn't like everything! It drives me crazy. I require everything I put on the table to be tried by all, especially if they haven't had it before. There are basic rules of nutrition that I will require as well. If I didn't, my daughter would only eat candy. On the other hand, I truly believe there are some things you just won't like. My son can't stand pickles, so of course, I never offer them to him. When I do require my daughter to take bites off her plate, I never get gagging, I really believe it's a control issue. On another note, I grew up in a foreign country where it was impolite not to at least try to eat what you were given...with a smile! We are getting ready to go overseas as well and I will require the same from my children (within reason). I don't believe this is a black and white issue and every circumstance is different.
  8. Thank you all for your hugs and sympathy! I can feel them! It is interesting... My husband was worried that I might start worrying about him flying, but I have such a peace about it. I know he's a good pilot, and his mechanical background makes him so in tune with his plane, but I also know that he won't die while he has work left on this earth. I think that gives me the most peace.
  9. Thanks for the sweet remarks! I feel warm fuzzies. I also wanted to add that when I was an educational therapist using NILD, we used only cursive for our students. I really has amazed me how the children seem to take to it better. Handwriting is also easier to read!
  10. I have only done half of one book, Matthew, but my children love it. It is basically an overview of each book of the Bible, highlighting main points. I just talk about each section and show them what to write. I put the pdf on my nook for easy accessibility and I can show them what they are supposed to draw next. So far, I haven't come across anything I disagree with, but if I did, I would just skip it or change it around. I do change the wording sometimes for my younger children. I've stopped it for the Christmas season in order to do Color the Christmas Classics with them and they keep asking me when we're going to do it again.
  11. Do you love it as much as my husband? He thinks it's the best place on earth! :)
  12. I taught cursive first to my now 8 year old and my 5 yo dd is doing cursive now. She's picked it up a lot faster than her big brother! I wouldn't do it any other way! :) I actually wrote my own program because I couldn't find exactly what I wanted with my ds. It's all 55% off at Currclick.com, btw. (https://www.currclick.com/index.php?keywords=teach+me+joy&x=0&y=0&author=&artist=&pfrom=&pto=&sdate_from=&sdate_to=&stime_from=&stime_to=) Sorry for the plug...couldn't help myself! To be fair, I will give a plug for another program that also teaches cursive first. I actually used it for my son until I decided I wanted a little different format. She gives a great reason for teaching cursive first here: http://www.swrtraining.com/id17.html Good luck deciding! I love teaching cursive first and my kiddos think it's so cool. :coolgleamA:
  13. My husband is a missionary pilot and we are in the process of going to Indonesia. He has a lot of contacts at our small local airport. Last night one of his fellow pilots crashed and died. He was my husband's friend and he was also one of our family's financial supporters for the mission field. HIs death has rocked our community. He was a very well-known and well-liked man with a very large family. As the wife of a pilot, my heart hurts for his widow, and at the same time I pray that I will never have to go through this horror with my own husband. http://appling-wayne.wtoc.com/news/news/90291-body-rick-poppell-found www.maf.org/bryant
