Popular Post Matryoshka
Dd18 wants to be an archaeologist, and more specifically a marine/nautical archaeologist. Last year she contacted the guy in charge of maritime archaeology for our state (who knew such a thing existed?) and found out he was running a field school, which she signed up for. One of the co-professors was from East Carolina U's graduate marine archaeology program. They liked what she did last year so much the in-state guy had her do some work for him over the year, and she got invited back to this year's field school as kind of an assistant. Today was the first day, and they said the work she'd done over the year was so good it was publishable and they want to present it. And by some completely weird twist of fate, the guy from NC's wife took a position at dd's rinky-dink state university, and he's coming along and will be teaching classes as well, and asked her to TA for him! I'm not sure exactly what that will entail - but wow! She'll be an incoming freshman...

Matryoshka
This is not tiny...this is awesome. Thanks for sharing. Thanks everyone - and one thing that emboldened me to share (besides being super-proud of her :) ) is that I feel like I've been helped so much hearing about other people's dc's successes, and how it could be done.
Lilaclady
That is great. Way to go for your dd. I liked that she was proactive and that really paved the way. All the best

daijobu
Wonderful news! So, is maritime archaeology like finding shipwrecks?
Matryoshka
Wonderful news! So, is maritime archaeology like finding shipwrecks? Yes, or also sunken cities, I guess, though there aren't many of those. And of course excavating them scientifically, not treasure-hunting. The field school she's at is a shoreline wreck, so not much underwater work. If she actually goes into this, she'll have to learn to dive - just signed her up for a basic course.

Nan in Mass
You know, your daughter,s path so far sounds a lot like Jane in NC,s son,s path to being an archaeologist, which is very promising! Jane,s son graduated from college and has been a working archaeologist for a few years now. His summer contacts and his professors made this possible. Great news! I think it is important to share the good stuff here, not just the cries for help. : ) Nan

That,s good. I didn,t do it justice in my brief description. It is nice to see people taking advantage of the flexibility that homeschooling offers to allow their children to do something other than make the teen years a waiting period. : ) Nan
