gingersmom
It's been many many years since I had a 3 year old and am clueless. I am buying my niece a raincoat and rain boots. She's average size but skinny. What size would your child wear?
umsami
I would buy 3T for a raincoat if they had it….maybe 4T as they could use it longer. DD could wear 18 month old pants until she was 5, but would want the length from the correct size. Coats wouldn't matter in terms of falling off. Shoes….don't know….probably Toddler 10/11? Desert Strawberry
3T/4T is average/a little growing room for a 3yo. Unless she's quite petite or very large, of course.
Melissa in Australia
My 3 year olds are wearing size 1 (12 months size) they are extremely small
Spryte
Mine wears a 4T or a 5, and size 10 shoes. She's very tall, though.
SamanthaCarter
You should ask, since the range can be very broad. Mine is in a 3T, but people consider her to be on the smallish side, she's not as small as my second was at that age though. She's wearing a 8/9 shoe, depending on brand. Elisabet1
Since she is already 3, I would buy her 4T. Most 3 yr olds are in a 3. And some coats run small. The worst that happens is it is too big and she has to wear it big or save it for later. I would hate for you to buy it any smaller and her not able to wear it from day 1. carriede
If you don't want to ask her size, get a 4T coat and 9-10 size boots. If you ask what she's currently wearing, get the next size up for the coat and round up for the boots too. My 37 month old is in all size 4T and shoe size 8 US. And she's in the 75%ile. BooksandBoys
My 35 month old wears 5T shirts and 4T pants, though that is about to change. He's very tall and thin, so I have to take in everything he wears.
SKL
I would buy a size 4 rain coat so she could use it a while. I would ask about the shoe size, because there is a lot of variation there.
Mnemosyne
Mine wears 3T, just turned 3 though.
happypamama
He wears mostly a 3 or 3T. Sometimes a 2/24 months and sometimes a 4/4T. He's 3y3m and on the smaller side of average, I think, not stocky but not super skinny. I just picked up a pair of his shoes, and they say 9 1/2. They were an older sibling's, and I think they're a little big for him but not too much.
gingersmom
She's just turning 3 but being she lives in NYC where it will be cold and snowy soon so I don't see her really using it till spring /fall. I will probably buy a 4T and they can always exchange it (buying from zappos) Thanks for your help!!
Ausmumof3
Always better a little to big than a little too small. Mine is a tiny 2.8yo and wears mostly 2t with a handful of 1s especially pants as they fall down. I buy online from us sometimes even though we're in aus
Carrie12345
I would call her parents and ask what size she is. I have a 3yo in 5s and a 7yo who fits in those 5s (waist, not length.) I would never attempt to guess. I wind up exchanging clothes *I* buy for my own 3yo b/c I misjudge!
KungFuPanda
My daughter was VERY tiny weight-wise, but average height and her size always matched her age. Most things were too wide for her, but she needed the length. For a coat, I'd buy age+1 unless the kid is big.
Tsuga
Old Navy is the place to go for skinny kid clothes. I love that store! They make them long and slim. On the other hand, if the child is on the thicker side, Target is the place to be. Hannah Andersson if you have the dough.
blondeviolin
4T and size 10 shoe.
Pamela H in Texas
Average kids wear their age/size. 3 year olds wear 3T. 7yos wear 7. Obviously some kids are thinner or chubbier. Some are taller or shorter. Most clothing is fairly forgiving. My kids are in the lowest few percentiles for weight. They each wear their age, slims, and have adjustable waist pants. They aren't form-fitting at all, but they fit. Anyway, for a raincoat, I'd just buy her size. If you want it to last longer, going up a size would be fine. Shoes are a different thing altogether! I've had 2yos wear size 8. My 6yo's boots are 9½ (I saw them yesterday). I have no idea what to tell you there.

They fit differently. She was 30 lbs this weekend.
PeacefulChaos
My 3 year olds all wore 3T. ETA: Just saw the shoes. Those can be hard. Pink wore a size 6 or 7. The boys I can't remember.
