Rosepetal
Here's my rising second grader's list. This is for a precocious kid who's working ahead of grade level in all subjects. Her birthday will be 2.5 weeks past the local cut-off for second grade, but she began schooling in a different state with a later cut-off. I'm not changing her grade. :tongue_smilie: Grammar: First Language Lessons Spelling: Rod and Staff's Spelling by Sound and Structure Writing: WTM style (sans WWE), may begin Classical Writing Aesop in the second semester Reading: Veritas Press literature Latin: Latin for Children A (I have held her off as long as I can so her grammar can catch up, and she's heard two rounds of the chanting from older siblings doing this course. I think she'll do fine.) Math: Rod and Staff -subjects under this line will be combined with her 4th grade brother Bible: Training Hearts Teaching Minds, and Sword Fighting (latter is done with all her siblings at the start of each school day) History: Veritas Press/SOTW modern times combo using an Easy Classical schedule Science: an older BJU earth science textbook read aloud, and completed much the same way WTM recommends working through kid friendly encyclopedias Art: Discovering Great Artists   Extra: American Heritage Girls  Hi Silvermoon, Do you also use VP Lit. guides for 2nd grader?if then how many each year? SilverMoon
Hi Silvermoon,Do you also use VP Lit. guides for 2nd grader?if then how many each year? I do not require her to complete literature guides. She typically reads all of the literature books VP lists for a particular grade (and then some) before moving up to the next level, and we discuss what she reads thoroughly. She's an active participant in the conversation, and doesn't just narrate what she read. Â This is my fourth child to homeschool second grade; I'm more than comfortable doing this without the guides. If you want some ideas for doing literature without them, I suggest reading the grammar stage literature and narration section in TWTM, and the book Deconstructing Penguins. :001_smile:

jar7709
I'm going to "graduate" my son to 2nd in July, but it's a little hard to pin his grade level in most subjects since he's asynchronous, we school year-round, and a lot of our stuff is interdisciplinary. This is what I currently have planned for the next 6-12 months. Â LA/interdisciplinary-- MBtP 6-8 Reading and writing-- lots of CM-style reading opportunities, slowly moving away from WWE and more towards Bravewriter. Math-- MM finishing 2B and moving on to 3A/3B Science-- Continuing interest led and BFSU. Likely adding Intellego Solar System unit study over the summer. Also probably adding Private Eye methods to our nature walks and field trips. History-- Loose history pulled together by moi. We are wrapping up (aka getting bored with) medieval now and we'll take a break over the summer to learn about the history of the western USA to go along with summer actitivies, then back into renaissance in the fall when the weather turns. I found that I couldn't stand using the textbook and workbook and HIG...can I just use the workbook and CWP book? Will I miss anything if I don't use the others? :)  Also, I just discovered the Teaching the Classics website. Have you used it already? Any advice on how to use/what to buy?  Thanks for any insight you can give!!  You don't need the HIG if you're using it to supplement. My dd loves math-it's her favorite subject. So she does the SM books for fun. I do go through once a topic and explain the new material since SM doesn't line up well with RS. But I have taught Singapore math to two other kids already and used the HIG heavily for them, so between that and Knowing and Teaching Mathematics, I don't need the HIG for that level. If you aren't familiar with the Singapore method, then the HIG would be useful. You don't have to do everything in it, by any means. i just skim and present the materials in the Singapore way-very hands on. That was clear as mud. Sorry!  I just bought Teaching the Classics. I have heard you only need the workbook, but I bought the DVDs as well, because I saw the author at the Cincy Convention and he was an excellent speaker.
