I am starting to work on my 2nd grade plans and would love to see yours:001_smile:

This is my tentative plan;

Math- Saxon 2

English - Rod and Staff English 2

Wrtiting with Ease 2

Phonics/Reading - Rod and Staff phonics/reading 2... we did Rod and Staff phonics 1 and it was great, so we will continue all 4 years. this includes handwriting as well.

Latin- Prima Latina

Science and History- still undecided... Thinking of doing Adventures in MFW and continuing with their program. Or may just do SOTW as planned in the WTM. Really have no clue on science... I know my kiddo's like lots and lots of experiments though!

Thanks!!

Jennifer

HOD Beyond - I can't wait to try this! Math Mammoth 2. MCT Island tagging along with brother orally mostly. Latin with siblings. Atelier 4 with sibs. I think he'll listen in on sibs read-alouds from Preparing. I think we'll continue on with I Can Read It or SSRW 2 but maybe will just use Beyond's emerging reader list.

Here's my rising second grader's list. This is for a precocious kid who's working ahead of grade level in all subjects. Her birthday will be 2.5 weeks past the local cut-off for second grade, but she began schooling in a different state with a later cut-off. I'm not changing her grade. :tongue_smilie:

Grammar: First Language Lessons

Spelling: Rod and Staff's Spelling by Sound and Structure

Writing: WTM style (sans WWE), may begin Classical Writing Aesop in the second semester

Reading: Veritas Press literature

Latin: Latin for Children A (I have held her off as long as I can so her grammar can catch up, and she's heard two rounds of the chanting from older siblings doing this course. I think she'll do fine.)

Math: Rod and Staff

-subjects under this line will be combined with her 4th grade brother

Bible: Training Hearts Teaching Minds, and Sword Fighting (latter is done with all her siblings at the start of each school day)

History: Veritas Press/SOTW modern times combo using an Easy Classical schedule

Science: an older BJU earth science textbook read aloud, and completed much the same way WTM recommends working through kid friendly encyclopedias

Art: Discovering Great Artists

Extra: American Heritage Girls

Hi Silvermoon,

Do you also use VP Lit. guides for 2nd grader?if then how many each year?

Hi Silvermoon,

Do you also use VP Lit. guides for 2nd grader?if then how many each year?

I do not require her to complete literature guides. She typically reads all of the literature books VP lists for a particular grade (and then some) before moving up to the next level, and we discuss what she reads thoroughly. She's an active participant in the conversation, and doesn't just narrate what she read.

This is my fourth child to homeschool second grade; I'm more than comfortable doing this without the guides. If you want some ideas for doing literature without them, I suggest reading the grammar stage literature and narration section in TWTM, and the book Deconstructing Penguins. :001_smile:

I'm going to "graduate" my son to 2nd in July, but it's a little hard to pin his grade level in most subjects since he's asynchronous, we school year-round, and a lot of our stuff is interdisciplinary. This is what I currently have planned for the next 6-12 months.

LA/interdisciplinary-- MBtP 6-8

Reading and writing-- lots of CM-style reading opportunities, slowly moving away from WWE and more towards Bravewriter.

Math-- MM finishing 2B and moving on to 3A/3B

Science-- Continuing interest led and BFSU. Likely adding Intellego Solar System unit study over the summer. Also probably adding Private Eye methods to our nature walks and field trips.

History-- Loose history pulled together by moi. We are wrapping up (aka getting bored with) medieval now and we'll take a break over the summer to learn about the history of the western USA to go along with summer actitivies, then back into renaissance in the fall when the weather turns.

Things I'm reasonably confident we'll do:

Math: Singapore 2B/3A with CWP2 and IP2; Miquon for variety and fun

Writing: WWE2

Grammar: FLL3

Spelling: AAS4

Reading: Lots of good books, at least 30 min/day.

History: SOTW2 with mapwork and the occasional AG project

Bible: Telling God's Story 2

Extras that I'm hopeful we'll do (and I am determined not to worry if we only do part of them ...)

Geography: Finish Evan Moor Beginning Geography

Latin: Repeat Song School Latin, this time with the workbook. (All we've done this year is colour in the free pictures while listening to the songs.)

Art: Artistic Pursuits

Greek: Greek Alphabet Code Cracker

Math Fun: Life of Fred Elementary

Essentials that I'm pulling my hair out over:

Science: BFSU 1 and move into 2? Combine with RS4K? Something else? :confused1:

Extras-

Art: will continue to take outside art classes (drawing and ceramics) and art history that I pull together myself from various sources

Music: children's choir and possibly piano lessons

Nature: will continue with a nature class he's taken for the past year and possibly signing up for a Junior Naturalist program through our state's DNR

Not sure what we're going to do for spelling and/or phonics just yet. Trying to decide between continuing with ETC and Spelling Workout or switching to AAS. I'd also like to find an opportunity for him to learn a language (he's interested in Japanese) from a native speaker but I haven't had much luck with that yet.

Math-Miquon, MEP, Ray's

Reading/Phonics-Dynamic Reader (through VT), ABCtheKey, ETC, and WRTR

(yes, it's a lot of phonics-she really needs a lot of review and different approaches;)) and ANY books she is willing to read. Three 10 minute reading sessions daily.

Spelling-AAS (again, this is less for spelling and more for phonics review)

Grammar-FLL

Writing-copywork, narration and dictation ala CM/WWE

Penmanship-WRTR, possibly HWOT

Literature-LOTS and LOTS of good books! Discussion, and possibly extra activities from this PDF http://omsd.omsd.k12.ca.us/Teacher/bettyca/Shared%20Documents/Book%20Project%20Ideas.doc

Science-BFSU, Developing Critical Thinking Through Science, interest led (this is her favorite subject, so plenty of rabbit trails lol) and nature study (see below)

History-SOTW and 12-15 corresponding literature selections, once monthly project from AG, timeline, map work, lap book

Bible-VOS bible alongside history reading

Logic-Logic Safari

Artist and Composer Study-ala CM

Extras

Nature Study-working on the farm :001_smile: (currently we are incubating eggs and raising monarch caterpillars...lots of opportunity for observation!!)

We use RS math as our main program, but I do like to supplement with Singapore. I found that I couldn't stand using the textbook and workbook and HIG...can I just use the workbook and CWP book? Will I miss anything if I don't use the others? :)

Also, I just discovered the Teaching the Classics website. Have you used it already? Any advice on how to use/what to buy?

Thanks for any insight you can give!!

You don't need the HIG if you're using it to supplement. My dd loves math-it's her favorite subject. So she does the SM books for fun. I do go through once a topic and explain the new material since SM doesn't line up well with RS. But I have taught Singapore math to two other kids already and used the HIG heavily for them, so between that and Knowing and Teaching Mathematics, I don't need the HIG for that level. If you aren't familiar with the Singapore method, then the HIG would be useful. You don't have to do everything in it, by any means. i just skim and present the materials in the Singapore way-very hands on. That was clear as mud. Sorry!

I just bought Teaching the Classics. I have heard you only need the workbook, but I bought the DVDs as well, because I saw the author at the Cincy Convention and he was an excellent speaker.
