Momling
Quick! My daughter's turning 9 next week and I wanted to order a few books for her. She's totally cat obsessed, so that is the theme -- DVD of Cats (musical), TS Eliot poetry... What else? She's read Time Cat by Lloyd Alexander and Miranda the Great by Eleanor Estes. She's not (thankfully) into the Warrior cat series. Can you think of cat fiction or cat humor that a 9 yr old would like? She's a super mature girl with a great sense of humor and an amazing reading ability, so appropriate adult novels would be okay too.
Belacqua
Pinky Pye, also by Eleanor Estes, is a sweet novel about a cat.

OrganicAnn
TS Elliot's poems about cats (which is the basis of the musical Cats) might be a nice contrast to cat fiction.

Rebecca VA
My daughter just today got the latest copy of Faces Magazine. It's about Russia, and there's a story about the Moscow Cat Circus. They teach cats to do tricks. There are some online videos of the circus cats performing their tricks that you could look up.

Chrystal
A Mango Colored Space by Wendy Mass. A little sad as the kitty does pass away, but so worth it for the relationship that the cat and girl have. The main character is special in that she sees colors in sounds, numbers, and letters and her cat is named Mango because that is the color she always sees with him. LibraryLover
Cythia Rylant and The Light House Family has a cat mother figure. Do not be put off by the illustrations. They are picture books, sure, but the vocab and prose is lovely and appropriate for a young 9 year old. They are well written. Catwings is a trilogy, and very good. My dds both read these at about 8 or so. I think they would be enjoyed by a 9 year old. Some kids do enjoy the Warrior books. I think they are fine. I wouldn't think they would be on most No lists? If they are, I've missed that. The Cat Lady. Very interesting and enjoyed here, but Cat Lady believes in reincarnation. Non fiction books are nice as well. My youngest esp enjoys cook books/recipes for cat food. :) Edited March 31, 2011 by LibraryLover
