Kissy
Anyone have any tried and true ways to start labor naturally? I do not want to drink castor oil. Thanks in advance.

Kissy
we tried that...it isn't working. that is the only thing we have tried. It sounded the safest.
delaney
I've tried both. Unless you are almost ready it won't work anyway. :grouphug:

Dawn in OH
You just have to wait it out. It will happen when it's time.
patchfire
Unfortunately, about the only thing that's 100% is time. :tongue_smilie: Not a lot of help when you're the one waiting on labor! Other than that... eggplant parmesan? It worked for SIL. I ate there but just had spaghetti marinara when I was pg w/ #2, and went into labor less than six hours later. Coincidence? Who knows? But you get a nice meal out of it AND there are no detrimental side effects.

Mejane
A friend of mine was successful with n*pple stimulation... Worked for me. I was a week late, and labor came on within a few hours.
susankenny
2 tablespoons of castor oil mixed with orange juice will definitely bring on labor if you're ready. I have proof, and he's sitting 4 feet away from me:D.
Carrie12345
I've only "tried" to encourage labor with 2 of my 4. They both wound up medically induced at 41 and 42 weeks. Not that I'm recommending that! I'm just saying that nothing I did on my own inspired them to move out. The other two were both born at 40w1d, before I had any thoughts of evicting them. jplain
Crying maybe? I didn't go into labor until 42w0d and 41w1d. I was not amused. I nursed through my second daughter's pregnancy, and much to my midwife's amusement, even breastfeeding my first daughter didn't trigger Braxton Hicks contractions. Walking didn't do anything but make me grumpy. Spicy food did nothing. I wasn't interested in tea, so that was out. Hang in there! It'll happen. squirtymomma
If you're nearing or past 41 weeks, accupuncture could do the trick. It's been the magic pill for my first two. With my first, I had the treatment at 9 days past due and gave birth at 11 days post. With my second, I had the treatment at 5 days past due and gave birth the next day. I'm due this Sunday and wondering how soon I can get it done and it be effective (you can't do it without a prescription before your due date). I've been 2 cm dilated with baby at -2 station for 2 weeks now. If I've made some progress when I get checked by my midwife tomorrow, I'll probably schedule a treatment for Monday. Heather in OK
the only thing that's 100% is time. That. Nothing is going to work if your body isn't ready. If you do castor oil, be very careful. It can dehydrate you. So be sure to push the fluids once the loose stools kick in. I have never seen nipple stimulation work to put a woman into labor. Meriwether
I slipped on some ice in January and landed right on Baby Girl at 38 weeks. Contractions started 10 minutes later. Of course, I wouldn't recommend doing it on purpose.
H0MEFree
I have tried all kinds of ways. The most unusual was walking or crawling up stairs. Taking more than one step at a time if possible. It's a midwife trick. I have also tried the LaborBoost (http://www.thenatureschild.com/Baby_Belly_Botanicals_LaborBoost_Labor_Cream_p/bbbt-lblc.htm) It was completely worthless. It did not help start labor or anything. I followed directions, believe me. It also did not help labor progress when I did finally go into labor at a later date. In short, 4 babies later... nothing short of it being time helped.
ktog29
With three of mine, a membrane sweep by the midwife did the trick. It worked within 1 day for two of my boys and for the third boy, it worked within a day the third week they tried (we started trying earlier with him b/c my babies are HUGE...ds4 was 11 lbs, 3oz and was born before 40 weeks). It seems to move things along if baby is ready but not send you into labor if things aren't ready. At the very least, it gave me a feeling of control :001_smile:
IsabelC
Wait. Wait. Wait some more. Labor will start.(How many women do you know who are 12 months or more pregnant?) While you are waiting, do not answer the phone. Direct any online inquiries to this website: http://www.haveyouhadthatbabyyet.com/ Do some more nesting. Cook a couple more meals for your freezer, have your husband take some beautiful photos of your belly, and any other things that you didn't think you'd have time to do. Pretend you are French: your baby won't know otherwise (I have been advised that French women are not officially "overdue" until they pass 42 weeks). Plan something interesting or fun for each day. This will take your mind off how "overdue" you are. Try any natural remedy you fancy, as long as it doesn't have side effects. It might work, and if it doesn't, at least you'll feel as though you're doing something. Think of this as good practice: we all know that parenting demands endless reservoirs of patience. And did I mention wait?

wy_kid_wrangler04
I tried EVERYTHING with my son. Way too much castor oil :ack2: that had some harsh side effects :001_unsure: I tried black cohosh, blue cohosh and waddling up and down tons of stairs. Nothing. A membrane sweep didnt even do it. The boy was stubborn :glare: OH-- When I was pregnant with my oldest My dh brother brought him to a casino as a last hurrah :glare: (3 weeks before I was due) Well- I didnt hear from him for over 24 hours, no phone calls nothing. I was in such a panic I literally thought he won huge and somebody followed him out and killed him. I was having visions of him dead in a gutter-- I called his mom over because I was so numb from fear I didnt know what to do. I was in such a panic, could not stop crying- then he DARED walk in the house- after his mom laid into him it I wanted to beat him for putting me through that :001_huh:. So somewhere between intense, numbing fear and :cursing: at the fact that he was just so inconsiderate that he didnt call and let me know he was ok I went into labor 3 hours after he got home :glare: I dont recommend it Edited June 10, 2010 by wy_kid_wrangler04
Amber in AUS
Vacuuming the carpet broke my waters with my last 2. I was 2 weeks early with DS and 3 weeks early with DD. Apparently forward tilt and rocking motion with legs wide apart encourages the head to engage better thus resulting in my waters going. My OB was going to recommend it to all his overdue ladies ;)

Mejane
Go to a place where you would be totally mortified to have your water break. It'll happen there. :D
Sasharowan
Wait for a hurricane to blow through the neighborhood. That's what brought my daughter 2 weeks early. Everyone is evacuating and we're heading for the hospital.
scrappyhappymama
I highly recommend a nice long Prenatal Massage. :D I went into labor within 24 hours of a prenatal massage, three times!:D Each time I told the therapist to be sure to hit ALL the spots they tell them to avoid with pregnant ladies earlier in pregnancy. I made sure I emphasized that going into labor was A-OK with me. And each time, it worked! And hey, if it doesn't work for you- at least you'll be nice and relaxed and :chillpill: while you wait. ;) Anecdotally, I do not recommend the Castor Oil method, unless you are out of time and facing a medical induction. I tried to evict my first baby that way, and it started my labor but I never got into a great labor pattern on my own and then the baby passed meconium too, so I ended up with a bunch of augmentation and interventions I never wanted. :ack2: Plus, a massage is a much more pleasant way to pass the time. Maddysmom26
I baked a few pies :001_smile:.. The bending over and rolling out the pie crust made my back hurt.. hmm.. then that night I went into labor but it most likely had nothing to do with the pies.. ;) Hang in there. :grouphug:
5sons
My midwife gave me some literature about why labor starts. When the baby is ready his lungs give off a protine in the amniotic fluid which is absorbed by the placenta. The placenta sends off a hormone to the mother that says "baby is ready". Then over the next 48hrs or so mom sends baby a burst of immunities. (and gets mom's body ready) This doesn't really help other than let you know that waiting is good if seen in this light.:glare: Hope your baby comes soon! Kristen did someone mention crying!! Entropymama
Go to a place where you would be totally mortified to have your water break. It'll happen there. :D  I lock myself in the house the last few weeks just in case!! My suggestions is sleep as much as possible. :001_smile: Make a list of all the things you want to do that you won't be able to do once baby comes and start doing them. When are you due? Good luck!! smrtmama
Anyone have any tried and true ways to start labor naturally? I do not want to drink castor oil. Thanks in advance. The only natural way to start labor is waiting. No method of induction is truly natural and none are truly safe. Things like eating spicy foods, taking walks, and having intercouse with your partner may or may not actually shorten the time until labor's onset, but at least you could have fun while you wait? LarlaB
Fresh Pineapple ;) Fresh pineapple (Mango & Kiwi as well) has an enzyme called bromelain that is supposed to work like a prostaglandin, ripening and softening the cervix. I read that little tidbit when I was almost 38 weeks, ate about 1lb of fresh pineapple as I was doing computer work, and 1 hour later contractions started- DS was born 4 hours later. ;)
