had this new car for 12 hours, and my husband gets in an accident

Ugh.  Just glad I made sure to call the insurance company and set up insurance before my husband drove off yesterday morning.

It wasn't like it was a new, new car -- we paid less than 1000 for it, but the thinking was that this would be a dirt cheap 2nd car.  And, actually, it's totally driveable after the accident.  And no one was hurt.

It's just that he ran into another car that was much newer and will cost much much more to put back to its original condition.  And his insurance rates now go up.

I just need to complain.  In a place where he won't have to be embarrassed.....

Oops!

Reminds me of a few months ago when we bought a truck at a dealership.  DH was reversing out of the parking and hit a pole on the dealership property! It was hilarious.  Brand new truck got busted before leaving the dealership. What are ya gonna do.

Just out of curiosity, the comment you made about being lucky you got insurance ahead of time, don't you need insurance to get a license plate? In Canada you bring in your insurance with you to get a new license plate or transfer from another vehicle. Without current insurance, no license.

To be honest, I would guess that our liability insurance on our other car would have extended over to this accident, but I would just as soon not have had to worry as to whether that was true or not.  I don't know that you have to have proof of insurance, or if you just have to sign a form stating that you have it.

The title is not yet transferred on the car.  The last owner has signed the form saying he's transferring the title to us, but my husband hadn't got over to the office where the title is to be transferred officially.  He was headed over there as one of his errands, but the accident stopped him.  And now it's a holiday.

It's only the liability insurance that was an issue.  This "new" car is 16 years old with 311K miles on it.  It was supposed to be a super cheap car that he could go back and forth to work in.  And now it's costing us a lot more.  Including higher insurance rates.

Oh well.  No one got hurt.  And it really wasn't my husband's "fault" except that he made the mistake of driving on slick streets on a really snowy day.  (Although as far as insurance is concerned, it's his fault)

You don't have accident forgiveness on your policy?

Yeah, now that this has happened, I'm wondering about this.  The rates go back down after 3 years, so I wonder if that would be what you're talking about.  Do people have accident forgiveness that kicks in earlier than that?

At this point, we have so much insurance tied up with this company that it's going to be difficult to find out if it would be cheaper to go somewhere else.  Or if it's even possible (if we're locked in due to mortgages).

The one thing I will say for this company is that they pay claims without an argument.  They've always been professional about the whole thing.

And given how little we're paying for our cars (no collision -- mostly accident free up until now -- high deductible) I wonder if there wouldn't be many companies that could really go much cheaper.

Accident forgiveness with Allstate means that our rates don't go up at all with an accident.

Little update on the insurance aspect of things --  my husband didn't drive on Thanksgiving, so the next day he was out was Friday.  And he gets stopped by a cop because one of his brake lights is out.

And, you guessed it, because we only just got the car, we don't have proof of insurance for that car yet.  My husband was able to show proof of insurance that he was on for another car, but not the one he was driving.

Fortunately, the cop took pity on him and just told him to get the light fixed and get something proving he had ins. for the future.

But my husband is all upset about everything these days.  It's not so nice how a little thing like a fender bender can really have lasting emotional effects.

I also did some ins. comparisons on the web and discovered that even with the rise in ins. rates, we're still getting a better deal than anyone else wants to give us -- even when I say we're accident free.  I hate ins. rates.  And I really don't get them.  I can't exactly complain because we look like we're getting a good deal, but why do they have to be so not transparent?

We have a time frame in which the new car is automatically covered under our car insurance. (Something like 30 days?) So, I buy cars and then put them on insurance a week or so later when I get the chance.

Well, "lucky" in that he didn't have to start questioning whether he was covered on top of the accident in the first place.  That at least he knew he was ok in that regard.

I feel bad that he still feels so bad about this.  But I do understand.  I got in a fender bender years ago -- but the cost was minimal to fix and the other party (I suspect) actually didn't have insurance so they didn't want to get insurance involved because it would be a crime at that point (for them) and it was pretty unclear whose fault it actually was -- so we just went with fixing our car ourselves and they took care of theirs.  But I still couldn't sleep for nights afterwards because I was so upset about it.
