Blue Hen
All our public schools are closed today since the polling places are in the schools. How about in your town? Carole Election Map Coloring Map

3lilreds in NC
OUrs are closed, too, and my children are quite offended that we will still be doing school!
Melinda in VT
Schools are open here, even though they are voting places.
Tammyla
We have a pretty large district, but the buses were running this morning.
MelaniePA
I haven't the slightest idea.
KAR120C
OUrs are closed, too, and my children are quite offended that we will still be doing school! But I reminded him that we'll be taking tomorrow off after staying up late to watch the returns! ;)
swellmomma
wow, I have never heard of shutting down schools just because they were a polling station, we had our polling stations in schools for our election too but the schools were still open. They just had the door to the gym (where the polling station was) open to the public and a teacher at the door that separatated the gym from the rest of the school so that strangers weren't walking all over the school. Alice
They were closed here yesterday too, for some kind of teacher workday.

Most of the elections (primary or non-president years) that's exactly what they've done here. But this time, I think especially because they're expecting such a huge turnout, a lot of schools have opted to schedule one of their teacher workdays to coincide. I can't remember now if they did the same for the last presidential election, but I think they did....
OH_Homeschooler
I vote at a PS and they were in full force today!
Cricket
Thanks for the great link! I'm not sure about the public schools. I saw one kid out today with his grandma but that doesn't mean much. I get the impression he doesn't have to go to school if he doesn't feel like it.
beansprouts
We just voted at the middle school up the street. There is no school.
Quiver0f10
The bus stop is right outside my front window and I didn't even notice if they stopped LOL! Guess I will have to pay attention @ 3:30ish to see if they stop then.
mommaduck
yeah, I've never heard of closing schools for an election either.
Jeannie in NJ
public schools are open here. In our area there is no voting at the schools, instead the voting places are at churches, civic center, rec center, and in our town even at the animal shelter. My place for the last 15 years in at a Catholic church. The same workers are always there and they know me by sight (they used to give out cookies, but for some reason they stopped). elegantlion
They are closed here and we are off as well. Although we will be watching tonight and using that wonderful map someone linked to today. So that will count as school.
sleepy
I picked "other." I have no idea what the public schools do around here.
anewday
Open, but the elementary school next to us is a polling place anyway. :tongue_smilie:
Guest Katia
Public schools here are open. We used to vote at the schools, but they moved to the public library, the community theatre building, etc. So......here at home we are 'supposed' to be having school.......BUT..... There is a House Marathon on TV, so we are watching House today and trying to do school during the shows we have already seen :001_smile:
KidsHappen
You don't want to mix grouchy voters and teens in the throws of puberty. Plus, I am guessing that it would make security a little tough.
Rhonda in TX
I'm not sure why. They've had school on previous elections. It seems to me it would be a good day to help make up for time missed because of Ike.
AndyJoy
Our polling place is the community center, so the schools are open. However, it was cool to see 6 juniors and seniors I know from the local Christian school working as volunteers! I saw 3 elementary-school-aged children with their parents who I would guess are home schooled. They didn't seem to mind the long wait as each of them was very absorbed in his own book! BritAnnia
The schools here (NC) are on fall break so schools are closed.
Carrie12345
Our local public schools are open, and our state-wide cyber school is open. Ds has impressed me with his efforts today, finishing up all of his school work before 1pm without any prodding. My girls have done math. I just can't concentrate, lol. tibbyl
We are in a suburb and now vote at a church. But for 16 years inside the city, we voted at an elementary school which did not close on election day.
Just Me
I voted "other" because our year-round schools are open, but the others aren't. We are also taking the day off, but only because my ds's best friend tracks in tomorrow.
percytruffle
Our public schools are open. My polling place is at a town hall, so it isn't even at a school. I left my school (private Christian school) a few minutes early today to vote. I figured I'd beat the after school crowd and it worked. I only waited behind two people. It feels nice to be home a few minutes earlier too!
Pretty in Pink
our schools are closed, and my neighbors children (public schoolers) just came over to inform me that today is ELECTION day (dontcha know???) and my children should not have to do lessons since the schools are out! LOL!
mcconnellboys
But some of the private schools are open!
