Parrothead
Yes. It is Irish. The best I can do is "Chivan" with a soft ch.
cindergretta
I floated this name last night to dh for the baby if it is a girl. He said "no." :: pout :: Sha-van, but with a hint of "b" with the "v."
cindergretta
Yes, what the link said. "Vonne" articulates it better than how I had it. I don't say "van!" Doh!
dsmama
A friend of mine's daughter is Siobhan. They call her "shivy" as a nickname sometime. shih VON (i is a bit of a misnomer -- it is close to the schwa sound in English).
Caitilin
This is my sister's name!:D Pronounced sha-vonne. :)

snickelfritz
There was a finalist on American Idol a few seasons ago with this name. My best recollection (so how many Americans might pronounce it) is Shu-Von. With a short "u" and short "o" sound.

oldskool
A friend of mine's daughter is Siobhan. They call her "shivy" as a nickname sometime. shih VON (i is a bit of a misnomer -- it is close to the schwa sound in English). That is how I pronounce it. There were two girls in my high school class with that name.
PeacefulChaos
shuh-vahn. That's how I have always pronounced it, anyway.
KrissiK
I love that name. First heard it on the soap opera "Ryan's Hope" however many years ago. That's how I learned how to pronounce it.
Rhonda in TX
There was a finalist on American Idol a few seasons ago with this name. My best recollection (so how many Americans might pronounce it) is Shu-Von. With a short "u" and short "o" sound. I had no idea how to pronounce it until she was on the show. Such a beautiful name! (I'm assuming her pronunciation was correct, but maybe not?)
Matryoshka
Sha-VONN. Lots of Irish names 'round these parts (MA), like Sean (Shawn) and Sinéad (Shi-NADE). The Siobhan on Idol was from MA. I believe Caitlin is just the Irish spelling for Kathleen (and pronounced that way there), but the Caitlins here pronounce it Kate-lynn, even though the traditional pronunciations for the other names are used.... KungFuPanda
The little girl I know pronounces it Shi V/FAHN. The V and F get morphed into one sound. I just think "chiffon" to keep me from forgetting when I see it spelled out in my roster. Sláinte!

nd293
shuh-vahn. That's how I have always pronounced it, anyway. I think that's the correct Irish pronunciation. Anyone Irish here to confirm?
Cassy
Yes, that's how it's said here. I won't say the "joke" surrounding the name, though (shove on......) Yes, Laura's pronunciation is how I've heard it pronounced. I think you're probably our resident expert on the pronunciation of Irish names though, Lorraine :D. I might come a close second, as I was brought up in Liverpool ;). Best wishes Cassy
Donna
My dd is learning Gaelic because she loves Ireland and fiddling. An "h" after another letter renders that letter null and void (LOL) so the "b" would be silent and an "s" is nearly always pronounced "sh." So the pronunciations you have gotten are correct. Took us the longest time to learn that Comhaltas (the Irish group that runs the All Ireland competition) is pronounced more like "coltas" but we are learning. runmiarun
This is my daughter's name. We pronounce it "Shuh-vaughn." (We're from south Georgia so any self-respecting Scottish or Irish person would probably cringe at our pronunciation). Her nursery buddies call her Vonnie. Best wishes Cassy Heh heh, I wish I could claim that title but Irish names are only used within the catholic community here, so I am as clueless as everyone else. Siobhan is a more popular one and my husband's cousin (uncle married a catholic) is called that. I had a college friend called Sinead (Shin-aid) but was very puzzled once when I had to read out Roisin. It's Row-sheen. :tongue_smilie:
KidsHappen
The Sarah Michelle Gellar's character on the WB show "Ringer" has this name too. I had never heard it before that. Yes and it is pronounced Shi-vonne.
