What's your favorite Christmas carol?

Recommended Posts

Ok - disclaimer,,,, I'm a deist.... :)

But - brought up a Christian, and we still celebrate the holiday in a more secular way, but feel the sentiments and meaning are universal.

Anyway - I love "Let There be Peace on Earth"

and "It's In Every Once of Us".

Not a carol, but I love this song. It's about Christmas in WWI on the battlefield and how the soldiers on each side sang to each other across no man's land. It's based on a
.

It's worth listening to the story at the beginning of the song on youtube.

That song makes me cry every time I hear it.... Beautiful.

Oh, I love O, come, O, Come Emmanuel. That was my first thought when I read the thread title. I don't have a favorite version.

I've had enough exposure to Silent Night - in german, that it is becoming a favorite. preferably a simple solo - in german - to a guitar. I'm working on learning it fully through in german. dh wants to go back to Austria. Sounds good if we can do Obendorf at Christmas.

I Wonder as I wander by Kings choir Cambridge.

and of course, the Messiah.:)

My favorite Christmas carol is In the Bleak Midwinter, poem by Christina Rossetti, music by Gustav Holst. Youtube has some choral versions that are just gorgeous.

I also love the Huron Carol (also called Twas in the Moon of Wintertime), a Canadian Christmas carol which Bruce Cockburn put on my radar.

In terms of secular songs, without a doubt I would choose Walking in the Air from Raymond Brigg's animated version of The Snowman. (
