SailorMom
Ok - disclaimer,,,, I'm a deist.... :) But - brought up a Christian, and we still celebrate the holiday in a more secular way, but feel the sentiments and meaning are universal. Anyway - I love "Let There be Peace on Earth" and "It's In Every Once of Us". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bPL3sPSY9A&feature=related John Denver starts singing at about 2:21 or Edited December 15, 2011 by SailorMom

Garga
Not a carol, but I love this song. It's about Christmas in WWI on the battlefield and how the soldiers on each side sang to each other across no man's land. It's based on a . It's worth listening to the story at the beginning of the song on youtube.

gardenmom5
Oh, I love O, come, O, Come Emmanuel. That was my first thought when I read the thread title. I don't have a favorite version. I've had enough exposure to Silent Night - in german, that it is becoming a favorite. preferably a simple solo - in german - to a guitar. I'm working on learning it fully through in german. dh wants to go back to Austria. Sounds good if we can do Obendorf at Christmas. I Wonder as I wander by Kings choir Cambridge. and of course, the Messiah.:) Edited December 15, 2011 by gardenmom5

Jane in NC
My favorite Christmas carol is In the Bleak Midwinter, poem by Christina Rossetti, music by Gustav Holst. Youtube has some choral versions that are just gorgeous. I also love the Huron Carol (also called Twas in the Moon of Wintertime), a Canadian Christmas carol which Bruce Cockburn put on my radar. In terms of secular songs, without a doubt I would choose Walking in the Air from Raymond Brigg's animated version of The Snowman. unsinkable
I love Joy to the World. I always thought of O Come, O Come Emmanuel as an Advent song. It's listed under Advent in the hymnal and we stop singing it at Christmas . For secular: Fairytale of NY, Baby Please Come Home and Grownup Christmas List (makes me teary-eyed).
