cdrumm4448
Do you do a formal spelling program with your 1st grader?
sbgrace
I started Phonics Road, which is intended for 1st grade, at the end of 1st grade. I decided to focus on reading well first and then doing spelling. So I would have delayed longer had we needed more concentrated reading work. All About Spelling is another option that starts young I think. Edited August 22, 2011 by sbgrace
Hsmomto4
Yes, we used Abeka's spelling program. I messed up so bad with my 2nd daughter (didn't start HS till our oldest was in 5th grade and she was a spelling whiz by then) that I wanted to make sure DDs number 3 and 4 had a great foundation in spelling...so I went with what DD #1 learned to spell with and it is working out great! wy_kid_wrangler04
I use AAS in 1st. Its a phonics/spelling program
JudoMom
I use Plaid Phonics in K-2 (Books A, B, & C), and think it's great preparation for a formal spelling program.
reign
I hope it is ok I replied. I have a k but plan on starting AAS this year. We will defiantly be using it during first grade. I want to get just a bit farther in OPGTR first.
Veritaserum
Yes, Phonics Road (phonics for reading and spelling).
boscopup
I did because DS1 was reading well by that point (roughly 4th grade level), but didn't have the phonics background. I used a phonics based spelling program to kill two birds with one stone. I'm starting DS2 out differently, but we're kind of doing a spell to read type thing (he's pretty good at spelling the simple words that he can read), so it will probably all be one thing anyway. If I had done a pure phonics-for-reading approach for K-2 and my kids weren't done with phonics-for-reading until 2nd grade, I would have waited on spelling. But since I'm using spelling to teach phonics, I am doing it earlier.
missiemick
All About Spelling. I did not use it with my daughter last year and have decided that she really could have used it to help supplement her phonics. Not going to make the same mistake with my son. Mommy22alyns
I used AAS with Rebecca in 1st. Sylvia is using CLE LA 100, which has a little spelling about halfway through.
kristinannie
We started AAS1 in K, but are doing it very slowly. I think it is fine to start AAS as soon as the child can read CVC words fairly easily.
stripe
Well, I taught using Reading Reflex which sort of emphasizes spelling. I realized it's made it easier for my child to learn how to spell. I've been using the Modern Speller book for dictation for a few months, and I am not sure what I'm going to do next!
Sherri in MI
We started Spelling Workout in second grade, once he was reading chapter books.
RahRah
I didn't last year and wish I had....we're now doing AAS in second.
Berta
We are using Horizons Spelling for 1st grade.
Aquinas Academy
No. We start Spelling Wisdom in 3rd grade.
mytwomonkeys
Sort of. For first grade they were still learning to read, so they learned spelling with phonics lessons (for example, CLE Learning to Read incorporates spelling too). In grade 2, I start with a formal program though.
Crimson Wife
My oldest is a "natural speller" and I would've actually been okay with never studying the subject formally but just working on errors as they arose in the context of writing. At the beginning of 3rd grade, she expressed an interest in doing a formal spelling program, so I started Spelling Power. My 2nd started AAS after he finished Hooked on Phonics. Guest
Yes, we are using Spell to Write and Read.
SilverMoon
Other. Both. My proficient readers started a real spelling book in first grade. My kids who still needed more phonics instruction didn't.
Alte Veste Academy
Yes. Echoing others, I did/do spelling in first grade with proficient readers. If they were not reading well, I would hold off. Although, interestingly enough, DS8 learned to read through spelling (he was obsessed with how to spell everything!), so I do think it could be a great plan to start with a child whose phonics learning works better in reverse. Mommee & Baba
I use AAS in 1st. Its a phonics/spelling program Us too.
MissKNG
I choose "other". We have a BJU Spelling book but we don't formally work through it because my big girl seems to be a "natural speller".
blessedmom4god
I used All About Spelling 1 with my son last year for 1st. It was a great phonics review and just the right amount of spelling. He probably could have complete level 2 last year too, but I didn't push it.
Satori
Yep, we started AAS before 1st grade actually.
HollyB
Yes. My daughter was reading well, so we started Spelling Power.
thescrappyhomeschooler
I voted other. I did a weekly spelling list, with activities and tests, for ds2 last year as a first grader. But, it wasn't a packaged "formal" spelling program. I based the lists on lessons from Phonics Pathways and printed off exercises from SpellingCity.com. meggie
I voted Yes. Does it count if he's technically a kindergartener? And we've only done one day of it? :D He's practically done with OPGTR, and I think he really needs to learn how to spell.
nov05mama
Yes, b/c he's reading well on his own...if he still needed more phonics instruction and reading help, we likely would have waited. We are using AAS1 at the moment, and will move up to AAS2 by October.
SnMomof7
I picked no. We did a LiTTLE bit of AAS together in 1st, but then I set it aside until we were further underway with phonics and then added it back in for 2nd as phonics review AND spelling :). Hypatia.
We also used AAS in 1st grade.
ScoutTN
Last year I didn't think we would. But AAS has been great for us. Excellent reinforcement of phonics from another angle. DD loves it. Tiles on the board are fun.
johnandtinagilbert
I had to vote "other" b/c we do spell to read in 1st grade.
Erika
Yes. I plan to start SWR mid 1st grade.
BigMamaBird
We're using "Soaring with Spelling." So far it's been very easy CVC words with lots of fun little games. It's been well received by dd so far, we'll be starting Week 5.
island-mama
I taught my daughter phonics and spelling at the same time when she was in first grade. I did not use a curriculum, but came up with words that followed a specific rule (such as -oa- words) and we would work through them for a week. It was laid back, but very helpful. She could read well at the time, but I still felt she needed a firm phonics foundation.
mazakaal
No spelling program until they're reading well here. But of course they do learn some spelling as they learn phonics. I've started each of mine with a formal spelling program in 2nd grade.

Momling
I would only do a formal spelling program if my first grader was a fluent reader. For my oldest, she did spelling in her first grade at a montessori school. For my youngest, we are starting spelling this year (second grade) with SWS. But we went through the ETC books and she did pick up on some spelling rules last year.
go_go_gadget
We've been using Spelling Workout, but are switching to AAS.
RootAnn
But since I'm using spelling to teach phonics, I am doing it earlier. I had to vote "other" b/c we do spell to read in 1st grade. I use SWR starting in 1st as phonics & spelling. It might be different with #4 when we get there, but I have a bit before he's in first grade. :tongue_smilie:
