movie goers beware..Black Swan

Recommended Posts

There are trailers of Black Swan that you can watch online. The trailers are so disturbing that I have no desire to see the movie. That kind of thing would get into my head and give me nightmares for a long time.

:iagree: Maybe I'm a wimp, but I'd prefer not to have the nightmares just the same!

I have not seen this movie and have no intentions to. I have no problems with lesbians or lesbian sex scenes. I have ethical quandaries with how dancers are forced to be so thin and overworked (as a former dancer). I also dislike movies selling sex to sell their movie, which I'm sure was at least most of the movie's appeal to some people.

:iagree:

Natalie Portman said straight up that that was why the lesbian scene was in the movie:

“Everyone was so worried about who was going to want to see this movie,†Natalie recalls to EW. “I remember them being like, ‘How do you get guys to a ballet movie? How do you get girls to a thriller?’ And the answer is a lesbian scene. Everyone wants to see that.â€

This is just a FYI post...and to let you know just how disgusting this movie is. A few friends and I went to see this movie this weekend and we ended up leaving. Yes, I know it's rated R but we didn't read anything in the review about it having explicit lesbian sexual content.

So it was the lesbian scene that bothered you? Would it have bothered you as much if it was a man and a woman? If that type of relationship bothers you I would do a little more research into the films you watch, or stay away from rated R movies.

Hahhaha, this thread is going to get ugly!!

FYI, this site here is inclusive of everyone!!

Just a funny -to some?- note here (and sorry for hijacking the thread, but perhaps that is a good thing in this case). My kids do Fife and Drum and attend parades. A few years ago we went to a parade to Brattleboro, VT which *used* to be a nudist's paradise. OK, so this year the corps is not going and I was bummed. Heard through the grapevine that some republicans did not want to go there because VT is, well, VT. OK. But not really OK. This afternoon I was chatting with one of the people in charge and I mentioned I was bummed we couldn't do Brattleboro this summer. BTW, events have always been voted on so it had surprised me that it had not gotten votes. She answered that they never voted on this one, but that we weren't doing it because of the nudists there (who probably walk around nude during winter as well, Scaaary). I looked at her and laughed (I thought she was joking!!) and said that there was a law passed against nudists there now. I also joked with her if I would go hang around with nudists (I am not dressed for the beach, btw). SHe was just baffled.

Went back home and googled it and forwarded the ban on nudity. My thing is not just that she just vetoed an event that many of us enjoyed, but that she vetoed it without voting, but just being bossy.

OK, go back to your cat-fights, ya'll.

The evidence is incontrovertible: they're black, and "swan" and "satan" both start with "s." Prithee tell, what more do you need?

:D

I just choked on my sweet tea. Thanks!

I loved this movie. I also love other rated R movies and porn on occassion (even lesbian porn!) so there you have it. Thank goodness I have no pastor.

Perhaps posters could be a bit more careful with their wording on a very large, very diverse public board? Something like "it was more graphic than I expected" or "I was uncomfortable with the sex scenes" rather than the repeated pairing of the words lesbian and disgusting?

I can't imagine going into this movie not knowing what I was in for. Doesn't the poster say it is rated R for strong sexual content, disturbing violent images, language and some drug use? I don't have cable television but I still know that this film isn't exactly 'The Nutcracker'.

OP, you specifically qualified your review with a condemnation of the explicit lesbianism. Would you be okay with explicit heterosexual sex?

I am looking forward to this film becoming available on DVD in the near future.

Sorry, but you obviously have no knowledge of Satanism if you think this is true. Swans, whether black or white, have no symbolic or iconic significance in Satanism.

You are entitled to your opinion, but at least get the facts straight. Instead of relying on others' uninformed opinions of what they *think* Satanism may or may not be, you might try reading the Satanic Bible for the nitty-gritty on Satanism, which contrary to most urban lore is not a religion per se, but rather a philosophy made up by one guy about 40 years ago.

And, just for the record, because I know you're thinking it... NO. I am not, nor have I ever been, a Satanist.

To be fair, I only saw those words paired in one post. ETA: besides the OP, sorry.

Do people really not read reviews before they see a movie? Not asking snarkily, I am really curious. It wouldn't occur to me to go see a movie I knew nothing about.

I was thinking that too!! With the price of movies nowadays, people really go without having a clue what the movie is about?? Really??

How could you miss the lesbian sex scene? For cripes sakes, that's why my DH didn't want to be late (once he read the reviews!!:lol: )!

Our pastor does not allow us to go to R rated movies. I find this helpful for when I find myself in temptful situations like this. :grouphug:

While I'm sure somewhere between pages one and seven (which are the only two pages I have read thus far, to be honest) this is quoted more than once, I just want to say that I truly hope (and have to believe) you have your own moral compass that someone else does not designate and over rule. I'm feeling inclined to assume you chose not see this movie because it did not sound like a good use of your $9, rather than that some one else did "not allow" it. :grouphug:

I just have to say, I want to watch the movie now. just because of all the comments.

Kinda. I didn't care to see it before, but now it just seems so much more interesting and deeper than, say, Hollywood, usually is.

If it's not focussed on living our life with full stewardship, it is deeply frowned on. Not just the pastor but deacons, bishops and elders circulate in the community and hold us accountable for how we interact. We do not want to have to answer to misdeeds on Sunday mornings.

Very interesting. I try very hard to not judge anyone's religious persuasion because I appreciate the same treatment. I must say I am certainly glad that I do not attend a church where the overseers act in a "big brother" role. To each their own, of course. :grouphug:

Just because a movie is rated R doesn't guarantee that it will be as intense as Black Swan. The R rating just means that there's a good chance. The reason I say this is that I saw The King's Speech the SAME DAY I saw Black Swan (I agreed to see BS with the friend, she agreed to see TKS w/ me.)

The King's Speech was also rated R, and that movie was mild and sweet and tender, with the F-bombed dropped a couple of times as part of his speech therapy (hence the R rating.)

I just wasn't prepared for HOW creepy BS was going to be. BUT, there are TONS of people out there who are NOT creeped out by the things I am. (Like, in one scene, the going-crazy woman thinks she sees the eyes in a picture move. That sort of think FREAKS ME OUT. But to other people it just doesn't affect them at all.)

So, this movie wasn't "bad" but a person should go knowing that it will be pretty intense.

As for the sex scene, I would not have liked it whether it was hetero- or homosexual. But, yes, that's expected in an R rated movie.

I think the OP (and myself) were just letting people know it definitely is an intense R rated movie, and not like The King's Speech type of R rated movie.

:iagree:

Even if you feel homosexuality is immoral, consider what it's like to go through life being called disgusting.

A warning that there is lesbian content that some may find problematic is one thing, but the "disgusting" isn't really necessary.

Unless you're talking along the lines of two girls one cup. Then I suppose it's valid. Don't google that.

Uh...I don't. I liked her better as Queen Amidala. I despised the lesbian scene in the Duchess. Ruined a good film, imo. And it was only PG-13

Oh, man...I can't believe you went there. You KNOW people are looking this up....bad bad bad!

On the other hand, it makes what happened in Black Swan look quite tame.

This is the best news I've heard all day! I really wanted to go see that movie, but the hubby didn't want to go see "a boring movie about ballet." Wait 'til I tell him there's a lesbian sex scene! I have a feeling the response will be, "What time is it playing tonight?" :auto:

I haven't really enjoyed her in anything since Léon, though I always *want* to like her for some reason.

1. The next rated R movie I'm scheduled to see contains neither Satanism nor a lesbian scene. Pity.

2. One really needs to apply Occum's razor to symbolism. In a film that is about a ballerina's transformation from an innocent to a dark creature (physically in the dance and mentally, that's the idea, yes?) you can assume that a butterfly is symbolic of transformation, not an obscure mind control experiment. A blog I found linking the film to the occult tried to do the latter, stretching the bounds of believability beyond anything I have seen before.

3. My pastor has mentioned specific rated R movies from the pulpit. I have never heard of a church in which you are held accountable for actions you may have been "caught" in during the week by church leadership.

4. I didn't see it in the theater because it looks scary and I'm a big chicken. I have to watch them on dvd where I can turn it off and work myself back up to watching the next part. :D

I've never seen that but I am going to guess that one really does involve Satanism.

Errr, sure, keep on thinking that. Nobody google it, for real. It's one of those things one should never google. You don't want to know.

BUT, I think actors start saying a lot of random stuff on those press junkets. Have you ever seen that American Sweethearts movie or Notting Hill? I wouldn't necessarily take anything said in one of those interviews seriously.

It involves consumption of poop. No google.

What a way to get a thread off track. Thank you. :D

I do not do disturbing. Haven't read The Shack or watched Lovely Bones [right?] Never saw The Exorcist or Friday 13th movies.

I haven't seen Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile. I just cant.

I got through Schindler's List, but cried like a baby for about 2 hours after.

I'm a wimp. Give me action or a romantic comedy. I cannot do intense. :tongue_smilie:

There are seriously some things you don't want to know. But knowing that doesn't help.

We had friends over for dinner a couple months ago, and someone mentioned "The Human Centipede." *I* knew what it was, having marvelled at the fact the filmakers thought they could get it cut for an "R" rating in the US. The husband of one of the guests knew what it was and tried to warn his wife from asking. She insisted, and regrets it to this day, but he *knew* she would.... he warned her. There's just some innocence that cannot be regained, but we don't get any deeper understanding of anything by losing. :tongue_smilie:

Well, black swans are meaningful to the satanists. As are probably many of the other occult images.

Oh for gosh sakes there is nothing about a black swan as a symbol that has any meaning with regard to the occult except as a symbol of mystery and that which is beneath the surface. There are likely good reasons not to see this movie but none of them require me checking my intellect and ability to think for myself at the door.

There are seriously some things you don't want to know. But knowing that doesn't help.

We had friends over for dinner a couple months ago, and someone mentioned "The Human Caterpillar." *I* knew what it was, having marvelled at the fact the filmakers thought they could get it cut for an "R" rating in the US. The husband of one of the guests knew what it was and tried to warn his wife from asking. She insisted, and regrets it to this day, but he *knew* she would.... he warned her. No kidding! Oh, I looked up the spoilers on the Human Caterpillar a few months ago (I couldn't stop myself either!) and found this absolutely hilarious article that went through the movie and showed stills of the scenes where--if you absolutely could not stay away from the movie--you should walk out of the theater to get a soda refill or use the restroom. I was rolling!

And yes, even the spoilers on that one still haunt me! DH told me someone's making a sequel?!
