Momling
If you celebrate Thanksgiving and are serving turkey... How big is your turkey going to be this year? (And... how many people are eating it?)
mommaduck
18lbs, but we are getting together with another family and there will be a ham as well as all the goodies on the side and for dessert. There will be 14ppl to start with and the possibility of more friends dropping in.
nono
17 lbs. For 5 people. Two are small. I promised my dh I'd get one under 22 lbs. for once, since he always complains about how I get a huge bird. I brought the 17 lb.er home, and he said, "Are you sure you're going to be OK with one so small?" I came close to hurling the thing at his head. :tongue_smilie:
dani3boys
We are smoking 27 pounds of turkey for nine people. I hope there are lots of leftovers!
Mom2J112903
3 people, just DH, myself and J. J can not have much at all, so it is really only DH and I. So *very* small turkey for us.
wendybird
24 lbs for 12 people.

Crissy
25 pounds for 19 people. This is enough, isn't it? :001_huh:
hsmom
Well I will find out the exact weight when I pick it up on Monday. I ordered a 24+ lb turkey this year. He told me it could be 24lbs or up to 32lbs. Last year everyone complained that there was not any leftovers, so I am making sure that there is this year! nono
15 lbs. 7 people. 1 large dog. Oh yeah. Forgot the dog. Thank goodness she can't read.
kitten18
I bought a 16lb turkey for 9 people (including the kids 7 and 5 who won't eat too much). After reading these replies, I'm a little worried that my turkey isn't big enough but we've had up to 11 people before and I've never had a turkey bigger than 18lbs because I cook it in a roaster. We have a lot of sides but I do want to have leftovers, hmmm...... maybe I should buy a ham too:confused:.
Sherry in OH
The turkey has not been purchased yet. The person buying it has been told to try for 8 pounds and definitely no larger than 10 pounds. It cannot be larger than 10 pounds because that is largest turkey BIL's fryer can handle. We have 10 people, but only 6 will be eating turkey.
Paintedlady
12 lb turkey for 4 adults, 2 kids.
cathmom
Mine is just over 20 lbs for 8 people. We like lots of leftovers! And actually, my turkey would be up to 22 lbs if they had had one that big - that's about as big as will fit in my roasting pan.
Brilliant
I ordered a 16-18 pound free-range turkey. We are going to smoke it. There will only be 5 of us but we love smoked turkey leftovers.
thescrappyhomeschooler
I'm getting around 20 lbs. for 9 people, two of which are kids and 3 of which are adults who don't eat much.
mommaduck
25 pounds for 19 people. This is enough, isn't it? :001_huh: With everything else that is usually on the table, yes, I would think so. It should also give you left overs for that evening when everyone is sitting around relaxing and visiting.
mom4him
I put 13-15. We will have 18 people here but I am also making a pork roast.
Dinsfamily
1-21 lb turkey + 1-15.5 lb turkey all for 8 adults and 8 children. I hope to a lot leftover for all of my post Thanksgiving recipes.
Quiver0f10
22 pounds for 12 people.
Guest
I got 20 lb. for 6 of us. Last year it was the same people and we did a 16/18lb. bird and didn't have much leftovers. I wanted leftovers this year!!!
Wendi
I usually buy a 15-20 lb. turkey. For three people. :001_huh: Leftovers are VERY important to my husband and son. And, since it's not any more work to roast a big turkey than a small one (and dh does the carving), I like knowing I won't have to cook for a couple of days after Thanksgiving. They like to eat the leftovers as they are (a plate of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, etc.), and I usually use some of the leftover turkey to make chili or tortilla soup. So that's my plan. I haven't bought the turkey yet, though. I'll probably buy it on Tuesday (fresh brined turkey from Trader Joe's). MamaAkins
19.5 pounds, 4 adults, 3 kids
myfunnybunch
My sister got her turkeys early this year, so they're huge. She's estimating it will be 30 pounds. We'll have to cut it in half to fit it into the oven. We'll be feeding 21-22 people (or so), and freezing the leftovers. Cat
justamouse
You forgot OTHER!!! :tongue_smilie: I buy (or get free) 2 20-25 lb Turkeys. This year Bro is deep frying one and I'm roasting the other. Even with just my rents coming we still eat a lot of turkey and now everyone gets to bring leftovers home. Cause it's all about the *sandwich* after T day. :001_smile:
Lady Florida.
Around 17-18 pounds for 4 people. One of them is a teenage boy in the midst of a growth spurt. My daughter in law has to work, so my stepson is going to come over and have dinner with us. We want to be able to have leftovers for ourselves and send him home with leftovers. Karen in CO
The bigger the better. We love the leftovers. When its just my family of 4-6 we do about 18 pounds. At my sister's house, we do a fried one of about 18 pounds and a 20 pound roasted. That will feed about a dozen of us.
Ali in OR
8.5 pound turkey breast for 5 people (3 small eaters). That is still too much, but that was the smallest they had. We can handle leftovers for one day but then we're sick of turkey. And we only eat it once a year.
Momling
We're doing a 12 lb turkey for 5 people (though I got it thinking it'd be 7 people...).
Carrie12345
We have a 20lb-er for 2 adults and the 3 younger kids. It was free, and I'm still stocking my freezer for post-baby time, so I'm very happy!
Chris in VA
22 lbs for our family of 5. Dear Dog can't have any, as it gives him the runs, and that ain't purty on a Golden. We make turkey soup the next day, and have hot turkey sandwiches the day after for lunch--by then, it's gone.
JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
25.xx pounds for one plus the second is 24-25 pounds and smoked. 2 day feast planned for 15-probably 13 will attend.
Jen in PA
10 pounds for 4 people, two of whom barely touch turkey. I really was going to just do a breast, but when I saw that I could get the whole turkey for the same price, I just couldn't do it. I really love all the leftovers, and I am used to turning a 5 pound chicken into 2 dinners, one lunch, plus a big pot of soup -- I'll do at least that much with the turkey.
