ProudGrandma
With summer coming, and hot dog season upon us, I was wanting to buy organic or all natural hot dogs...but I can't spend money on food my kids won't eat...if anybody has expereince with this and can tell me where and what brand their kids will eat, I would greatly appreciate it. THANKS! Kathy
thescrappyhomeschooler
I have purchased Applegate Farms organic hot dogs, which looked okay, but the kids didn't really like them.
Tap
I usually buy the Hebrew National all beef hot dogs. I don't think that they are great for a person, but are better than the Oscar Meyer style. They taste great for a hot dog.

LauraGB
Back in the day (before I didn't eat meat = my family still ate it) we bought Shelton's Turkey Franks. Thought I'd throw those into the foray of ideas, but I don't know how they still hold up in the grand taste of things - it was several years ago. Orthodox6
I have purchased Applegate Farms organic hot dogs, which looked okay, but the kids didn't really like them. dovrar
I was just thinking that I would love to find a hot dog without nitrates. Is that possible, or is that what makes a hot dog taste like a hot dog?:001_huh:

The Applegate Farms and Coleman Natural hotdogs that have been linked in this thread are all uncured. You can find uncured bacon as well. littlebug42
I do have a picky hot dog loving kid and she will not eat any of the hot dogs. She doesn't like the all beef ones at all but she won't touch the Coleman ones.

Jackie We buy the AppleGate farms dogs, but they are ridiculously expensive! Note there are two types, one comes in a 12 oz. package and the other comes in a 16 oz. package. The dogs in the 16 oz. package are slightly spicier, but the kids have gotten used to them. I like the larger size.I get these from Costco and my kid's like them.http://www.colemannatural.com/component/option,com_resource/Itemid,9/article,874/category_id,2/controller,article/ Thank you! I hope our Costco gets these. We will bug them about it! Do you mind saying where you live?
Orthodox6
This type of hot dog is very expensive. On the other hand, who would eat hot dogs often, anyway?! They are a high-fat, high-sodium, "fun food" that I serve maybe every couple of months, if that often.
KatieJ
I get these from Costco and my kid's like them.http://www.colemannatural.com/component/option,com_resource/Itemid,9/article,874/category_id,2/controller,article/ On the occasion that we buy Hotdogs, these are the ones we buy for our Grandkids as well. They like them. Hubby is an Engineer in a small family owned sausage plant..and he approved them. We of course buy from his plant when we will use up 10 pounds quickly, which is rarely. They don't have small cases available. Hebrew national is not a brand he would ever let me buy...I don't recall why, but he had been in many a sausage plant and I trust his judgement. Any brand that has MDsomething on it, don't buy. That means the meat has been mechanically deboned and you don't want it. Nuff said about that. Jackie :iagree: This is what we get when we run out of hot dogs we get from our local farmer. You can check to see if any local meat farmers around you carry them or check your farmers market. Miss Peregrine
Will they eat other flavors? My kids like the AmyLu's sausages from Costco. $14 for 21 but we don't eat them that much. They have apple gouda which is delicious, and another flavor or two.
Liz CA
They are probably kosher (according to Kashrut law) but your are right in that this does not mean they are organic. Our Trader Joe's has a nitrite/nitrate free hot dog that the guys love and I like it too. It is a proprietary TJ brand, however it does not explicitly say "organic" either - only nitrite/nitrate free and all beef.

dtb1999
We buy Maverick Ranch brand as well as Applegate Farms. I also noticed Oscar Meyer has a nitrite free brand last time I was at the store.
ProudGrandma
this "uncured" thing is a new term for me...thanks for that...now I have somehting else to be looking for. Thanks for all of the responses...I REALLY appreciate it!!!
bookfiend
We just found Bison hotdogs at Whole Foods, not organic. They were amazing; still had the hotdoggy taste but better - didn't shrink by 50% when cooked. The per/pound price looks high, but it works out to about $1.00/hotdog. It is that time of year! jenn-
Can someone give me a rough estimate on the cost and the location (freezer or fresh meat) in the store for the ones at Costco? I like the idea of being able to pronounce all the foods on an ingredients list.

I like the idea of being able to pronounce all the foods on an ingredients list. I can't recall the price, but I do remember it is a bundle of 3 - one pound packages. They are located near the bacon in the cooler...in the cheese aisle. Usually. You know how they love to move things around and send you on a "treasure hunt"! Pretty in Pink
My kids like Organic Prarie hot dogs, which are 100% beef. The taste and texture is not even close to an Oscar Mayer hot dog though. They are around 5.00 for 6.
ScoutTN
We buy the all beef ones, though the turkey ones are good too. I've had the Coleman's and they were also good. But our Costco doesn't always have them.
Jenn in Mo
Oscar Mayer has a new Natural hot dog in the store now. It has no nitrates (nitrites?) nor fillers. It's not organic, but I can pronounce the ingredients list and they aren't expensive at all.

texasmama
Coleman hot dogs...all beef, no nitrates, etc. I don't recall if they are organic. I find them at Costco.
6packofun
This thread is very enlightening! I would have just quipped, " 'Natural' and 'hot dog' in the same phrase? HAHAAA!" (and then gone on to grill a couple of dogs because just talking about this is making me want some) but really, since we eat them so rarely maybe it's worth it to try one of these brands. Huh. Cool! Crimson Wife
We like the Niman Ranch Fearless Franks. I can't remember if they are certified organic but they are hormone free, antibiotic free, nitrate free, and from humanely raised animals. mom4him
I get Applegate Farms Natural Beef. They also have organic but they are spicier than we like. They are the one convenience food I by and try to have a couple of meals a month of them.
