  1. I am using Super Charged Science and it links to an open source physics text called Light and Matter. The creators of Super Charged Science are able to plan out labs for any physics text I choose though. I had just planned to use the free linked text, but I thought I ought to check in here and get some input on physics options. Any thoughts on this text? Any other brilliant physics texts I should consider?
  2. I haven't posted in ages but I wanted to share a giveaway that I am hosting on my blog for 2 schoolhouse planners (1 teacher planner and 1 student planner of your choice.) There is one day left to enter: http://www.simblissitycottage.com/2013/07/giveaway-for-schoolhouse-planner.html I apologize if I'm doing this in the wrong place; It's been a while since I've visited here and things look a bit different now. :)
  3. And honestly, you don't have to show those logged hours until you're in court, so they don't have to be ready to grab and show proof at a moment's notice. I kept track for yeeeears and finally realized I have tons of finished work to prove the amount of time we've spent working. I can create an hour log if i need to, from my lesson plans and finished work. But if you are logging hours, there is a lot that you can do that counts as school. Lots of learning goes on outside of the school room. Also, a completed lesson can count as an "hour". So, if a full lesson has been taught and learned and completed in half an hour of math, this still counts.
  4. I just found this and thought some more Missouri families might be interested. It is a bill introduced to allow public school participation in extra-curricular activities and more for non-public school students. My family makes use of our local school's excellent band program, but my sons aren't allowed to participate in any contests. This bill could change all that! http://www.house.mo.gov/billsummary.aspx?bill=HB1834&year=2012&code=R
  5. Thanks, guys! It's been a lot of fun to create, but more fun to do!
  6. I hope it's okay to share this here: My family stops regular schoolwork and does "Christmas School" throughout Advent and I've organized our lesson plans to share online here, in case anyone else was looking for activities.
  7. Youch, that's a tough one. It really can bring in some good money. The average is $20 per day, per child in my small town, so I imagine it's better elsewhere. If you could truly organize it so that your homeschool day wasn't interrupted and continued to run smoothly, it could work. Sadly, my homeschool day doesn't run smoothly without added distractions. I would feel like a chicken with it's head cut off and by dinner time, I would NOT feel like cooking a from-scratch meal. My babysitting money would probably go to convenience foods in the end and not really gain me anything. Of course, if you told me you were considering having more beautiful babies, I'd encourage you 100%, so I know it doesn't have to be an interruption or a distraction; it can just be part of your new routine. It just couldn't be part of mine. lol.
  8. Thanks, Kate! I'd never even heard of Lobelia before, but I will definitely look into it. Both of the girls have asthma.
  9. Thanks, all! Kate, I'm mostly interested in basic immune support, but two of mine are very prone to croup/breathing issues in the winter. Last winter was great though and I'm hoping it was the extra care we took in supplements and diet. The only thing that got us down last winter was the sinus junk. I've added a couple things to the cart this year for sinuses and I'm hoping we'll avoid the nasties. It never occurred to me to make my own elderberry syrup! One poster asked for a source of elderberries and the two places I would look would be http://www.frontiercoop.com/ or http://www.bulkherbstore.com
  10. Kathy Jo has a program that looks wonderful and I'm trying to decide between it and WWE. Anyone have experience with it?
  11. Is this a regional thing? I would be interested in seeing stats for this. It is not the case for my area at all. Trade experience gets the job in my neck of the woods.
  12. I haven't heard anything resembling anti-intellectualism, but I have heard discussions and read several articles that questioned the current value of college. It became increasingly common and the graduate to job-opening ratio has inverted. This: And since it is no longer a sure thing (in fact, quite the opposite,) it is only natural that people start questioning whether the cost is a risk worth taking. This is especially true because the quality of the college experience is also decreasing.
  13. We've used Canon Powershots for ages, but have to replace them about every two or three years. I'm in the market (again) and thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has better luck getting good-quality pictures out of an inexpensive camera that lasts longer than 2 years. I'd like to stay under $200. Is it possible?
  14. I love it diced up in spaghetti. I've replaced the hamburger in spaghetti before with lots of squash and the kids still liked it. It has a neat texture when it cooks up like that. An online friend recently introduced me to something called The Big Bowl of Awesome. It's basically whatever chopped veggies you want with whatever meat you want, fried up in bacon grease or olive oil. I most often use chunks of onions and peppers and squash. If I add a meat, it's chicken or bacon, but I like it just as veggies. My favorite way will always be squash chips: sliced thin, coated in a thin layer of flour and fried in butter till browned. Only flip it twice if you can help it. Salt and serve.
  15. I've noticed with other companies that after I've purchased both texts, I discover that one would have been plenty since they both say the exact same thing. I haven't ordered through Peace Hill Press before, so I don't know if that is the case here. If you have used these, did you need both or would one or the other be fine for me? I have three different levels that I need to purchase and don't want to buy superfluous books.
  16. Awesome help! Thank you! I didn't realize Latin Alive was meatier than LFC. I knew it was written for high school students, but I thought it was going to start all over again with the basics. I really like CAP's stuff, so I will probably end up going with this one I would still be interested in hearing about other programs if anyone else wants to chime in.
  17. I always thought I wanted to move on to Greek after we did these, but my boys have certainly not mastered Latin yet. Something else that never occurred to me, my oldest will be a freshman this next year and I will be logging his classes for a transcript. I haven't looked into what looks good on a transcript. Latin IV or Greek I? I'm thinking Latin IV looks better, but I'm also thinking that I'd like my boys to learn both. Perhaps a fun, elementary intro to Greek while moving on to another Latin? But which Latin??
  18. Not a clear answer, but some thoughts: It's a large-ish book, so for convenience of reading, the kindle would be great. But there are lots of notes that might not necessarily transfer well onto the kindle. I would prefer to have it in hand so that I could incorporate it into history lessons, but for sitting and reading for pleasure, it would be the kindle. I'm no help!
  19. I sliced the tip of my finger off last night and it HURTS! Our neighbor is an EMT and said thre was no point going to the ER because there was nothing to stitch. Is there anything homeopathic i can take to speed healing? I tried googling but only found topical advice (calendula) but I'm too scared to take the bandage off yet. It took hours to stop bleeding last night. Wow - I type slow with my left hand! :D
  20. I've had many great transactions on the board, and only one bad one. The last time I sold something, the gal said she never received it and I refunded her money. I've been skittish of selling ever since and will always include a confirmation with shipping in the future.
  21. Welcome, CinD! I haven't used WWE myself, so I'm not much help. I'm sure someone else will be able to pop in and give advice, but if you don't get much response here, you might try the Curriculum Board. It's another WTM board specifically for curriculum questions that might be more helpful.
  22. Ooh! Good point. Both of mine were in the summer and I wore flip flops to church for months. I can't imagine how awful it would be to have a broken toe in the winter!
