Urgent prayer request: my SIL (25 wks pregnant) was in a car accident this evening...

Recommended Posts

She was transported by ambulance to the hospital after the accident. Doctors suspect a broken foot or broken leg and possibly a broken pelvis. They are hesitant to do many x-rays because of fear of harming the baby. Tests show that the baby is okay and the placenta is intact, but SIL is in a lot of pain from her injuries (cuts, scrapes, bruises, and the possible broken bones). I'm not sure if they are able to give her any pain medication since she's pregnant. Please, please pray for my brother & SIL & the baby. They will celebrate their 10th anniversary this year and this is their first child.

They can give her pain meds. Think about it. They give newborn babies who need surgery pain meds.

I thought the problem with giving a pregnant woman pain meds wasn't that the medicine itself wasn't safe for the baby but that if you gave the woman the appropriate dosage for her size, the baby would be overdosed.

I was told that I could have Demerol for migraines when I was pregnant, and not to tough them out, as my being in pain could negatively affect baby. The issue with pain meds is that they could compromise babe's ability to start breathing properly at birth, so they don't like to give certain ones too close to delivery.

Heck, I'm on methadone for pain from RSD, and part of the reason I'm on that med is that its the least likely one to harm a baby if I were to get pregnant. Precaution on my specialists part since I'm of child bearing age and married, lol

Definitely praying for your SIL and her baby. May God watch over them. :grouphug:

I'm praying that your SIL is feeling better and will have a quick recovery. I'm surprised they can't do an mri or ultrasound safely? Would those not detect broken bones?

Do you have an update?

Praying your SIL and baby remain safe and healthy, with comfort and recovery for SIL!!! :grouphug::grouphug:

About pain meds in pregnancy. I am already a high-risk pregnancy due to a clotting disorder and thankfully was already under the care of a wonderful high-risk ob. During my pregnancy with my second son I contracted viral meningitis. I was in so much pain I was constantly throwing up b/c of the headaches. I was hospitalized and given pain meds. I also had to have an MRI to rule out a blood clot in my brain. And all this was during the first trimester during the most critical time of brain and organ development for the baby. Scary to say the least.

Everything worked out fine and ds5 is a happy, healthy and very intelligent little boy. You can have pain meds in pregnancy. Granted it's not optimal or best case scenario but neither is a mom is so much pain that her blood pressure sky rockets and harms the baby that way.

Many, many prayers for your sil!

My mom talked with my brother late last night, and then relayed the info to me. SIL is doing pretty well, considering. She had x-rays of only the "critical" areas -- head, neck, spine, pelvis -- and there are no fractures there. However, they've not x-rayed her extremities, and they suspect a broken foot and/or leg and a broken wrist. They gave her some pain medication -- my mom understood my brother to say that SIL was given "watered-down morphine" -- no idea what that could mean. SIL apparently had ultrasound or MRI done, and those show that the baby is unharmed. The doctor told them that the first 4 hours after a trauma is the most critical time for determining whether the baby is okay, and she made it through that period of time without problems for the baby, as far as anyone can tell. The decided to keep her in the hospital for observation, and said they would monitor her pulse & bp every 2 hours. They also planned to draw blood every 4 hours to test for problems with the baby??? Not sure exactly what they would be looking for, but I'm not a doctor, so I don't know. I haven't received a report this morning, but I will repost when I know more.

My SIL is home from the hospital; she was released this evening. Thank you so much for your prayers! SIL is scratched & scraped & sore, but her injuries are not as severe as was first suspected. She has three broken toes on one foot plus tissue damage, and her lower leg is in a cast. Her leg and wrist are not broken. The baby seems to be just fine. We saw pictures of her car this evening, and it is a miracle that she wasn't hurt much more seriously. Again, thank you for your prayers.
