  1. Ondreeuh mentioned altitude up above (ha! no pun intended). I've noticed that makes a big difference here even when adding the extra bit of flour the box insists I add. I am at a little over 5000 feet.Boxed brownie mix here never seems to cook on the inside and they don't rise much at all. This was a surprise because I've always found the mixes to be foolproof. Scratch brownies cook fine though. Now I want brownies.
  2. Happy Holidays was common when I was growing up - as a combined wish for December and the new year and no one thought anything of it. Even things like 'seasons' greetings' were common on christmas cards and again, it was normal. I agree with the above though, these days it seems some groups/people look for things to get offended about. I often wish they would put all that energy into more productive areas.
  3. I am so bad about forgetting to do this after I've had something for a while. That said, I did email a seller on Etsy today to express (gleefully) how much I liked the fact that the printable planner page I bought came set up for duplex printing - so I didn't have to save a second copy, then merge them to so I could duplex print. She is the first to do this and I was overjoyed :)
  4. We have regular non-lit e-readers and tablets. I rarely touch the tablet anymore but I did just get a laptop that was about the same price as our tablets...11" screen, super light, and folds backwards to be used as a tablet when I want to. It's light in the backpack and has a big hard drive so I don't run out of space. It's sort of the best of both worlds. I agree though, it depends on what she will be reading and what else she wants to do with it. Since she's in college, will she be writing papers? Researching? If so, something with a keyboard and a bigger screen than a mini would be more useful.
  5. Since you have 6 classes, what about a 2 page horizontal week layout? Ignore the week days and use one space for each class, and the leftover one for incidental notes? It would keep all your class stuff grouped by class and you can see all the lists at once - and use one for each day if needed. Etsy has a ton of printables in this style so you can print them as needed....or just lay one out in excel. I ended up designing my own planner pages to keep track of class work so I could get them just as I wanted :)
  6. I like Black Honey too. It's got a very natural looking color and a bit of shine, not heavy. To get lipstick to hang on, I put on a layer, blot it well, then do it again, and add a light layer after I blot. It's not too heavy and will last me a good 4 or 5 hours. Even though the top layer's wearing off the underneath ones are still there. I always keep my lips covered though, especially here in Montana in the winter - keeps them from drying out and cracking, especially since I am walking to class and back every day.
  7. I never go out without lipstick. Arctic Mama is right, when you go light on other things it really pulls you all together and brightens your face. I have a drawer that must have 25 different ones in it from about every brand known to man. Some are more winter colors - darker and richer - and some are summer brights. I am a big dabbler too. If I don't have the exact shade? I'll mix two or sometimes three colors on my lips to get it just like I want it. Clinique has a color called Different Grape that is like my lip color but way better that I often use as a base, then put other colors on top. If I layer, the creamier colors go on the bottom since they make a long-lasting base and the glossier ones on top. That way even when the shine wears off, I still have color hanging on. Go to a counter and play a bit. I love MK lipsticks but there are only a few of their colors that work on me and I am like...classic Winter. Fair with dark brown hair and blue eyes. I get that about the discontinued colors though. I am still mad at Lancome...LOL. They used to make the ONLY coral shade I could wear and discontinued it like 15 years ago.
  8. I spent 13 years as a pro ballroom dancer :) the skirts on my smooth dresses were normally 2 full circles per layer for a gathered skirt. You can do godets to make it bigger but they are a pain to sew if you've not done them before. A gathered skirt is much easier and two layers should do unless it's really sheer like white. If you are reusing the bodice of the other dress, can you find dance trunks to match it? That will be okay for underneath as long as she isn't doing lifts. To hem it, let it hang for several days till the chiffon does what stretching it's going to do. This is the result of circle skirts being cit on the bias and chiffon is really bad about it. If you want rhinestones, you can use a hot glue gun but go light on the glue if you use it on the chiffon and don't get the gun tip to close to the chiffon. Make sure the stones are the AB type so they'll catch the light and reflect back - sorta like diamonds do. The normal crystal type doesn't and has no effect really. With that much skirt, no crinolines. They are too stiff and don't move, which is what you want the skirt to do. Way back in the early 80's, ballroom dress skirts were all crinoline and sorta stuck straight out :) Thankfully that style went away never to be seen again :)
  9. I am just finishing up a class in religious history and we used the one that Jessica linked. It's actually very readable and understandable.
  10. Oh wow, that brings back memories :) In high school, we had a statewide declamation contest - French. We had one assigned poem and one of our own choosing for those who made the finals. The assigned one was "Le Corbeau et Ler Renard" by Jean de La Fontaine. Link here with the poem and a recording: http://www.frenchtoday.com/french-poetry-reading/poem-le-corbeau-et-le-renard-la-fontaine
  11. We are huge IT Crowd fans here. I wish there were more episodes. We finished watching it a few months ago and now that winter break is on, I am going to rewatch it. I love Richmond :)
  12. That's what would happen here too :)
  13. IN addition to a complaint to the administrator/owner, I'd file a complaint with whoever licenses that daycare and make sure the daycare knows it. That might motivate them to get busy and deal with this situation.
  14. Check the specs - most Samsung tablets have a memory card slot so you can add to that 8 gb of memory. :)
  15. Check Staples too. I picked up one and it was $200 off :)
  16. I had my hysterectomy in August, the abdominal version and kept my ovaries. I had several really large fibroids.I am so glad I did ! My periods had gotten to the point of being unmanageable because of them and I wish I'd done it long before now. I also had bladder issues since my uterus was at 20 weeks size and sitting on it and that has completely cleared up too. The recovery takes time and taking it easy is absolutely necessary. I was good and had no complications at all. At 8 weeks, everything had completely healed. I am still dealing with the 'swelly belly' but it's getting smaller all the time. Hystersisters is a wonderful site, both for the forums and all the articles.
  17. SKL I hope you have awesome trip! I can understand your feelings here. When I was a kid, we always spent Christmas eve at home, but Christmas day was the day at the cousins/aunt/uncle's house....two hours away. So we'd get up, see all the cool presents, then immediately take off to drive two hours, stay all day, then drive home late. I adored seeing the family but it always annoyed the heck out of me that we got yanked away and left all our new 'stuff' home. Now? My family's scattered all over and so the holidays are usually just us to do what we want. While I miss seeing my mom and brother, we keep in touch and I see them at other times. It's nice to do just what we want and not feel stressed out over it all.
  18. The only one I use regularly is iron, since I am so prone to low levels. It also will stop an attack of restless legs in just a few minutes for me. Any of you who live farther north where days are super short in the winter have any success with Vitamin D? This time of year makes me want to hibernate :)
  19. As far north as I am now, I despise standard time. It doesn't help us get light any earlier (actually later even with the 'extra hour') and it's dark by mid-afternoon. I am definitely solar powered and all the dark makes me sluggish and tired. As mentioned above, I really don't like driving in dark and snow either.
  20. Also keep in mind that smartphones now have wifi, and most places you go have it so that cuts down on the usage of your actual data. I almost never turn mine on anymore :) I have ATT with no contract which was cheaper for me than Verizon out here. I paid for the phone outright which I think was cheaper in the long run. Re: the Windows phone - I've had one for 2 years and while I love the interface (it's so easy to navigate) I am getting ready to go back to Android. Apps are easier to come by and use of Google's various things is a little problematic on my Lumia with windows. I can't even use Google Docs at all.
  21. Now that kids are older, much more often. Also, since we are both in classes, we meet once a week for lunch on campus.:)
  22. My doctor's opinion was a few more years yet and I opted to keep them so I could avoid HRT as long as possible. Good luck!
  23. I love Smart Wool hiking socks. They are thick and warm and the soles are thicker also. They get me through the Montana winters very well and don't lose their shape or get baggy wither.
