  1. I get that all the paperwork is a pain in the posterior. It absolutely is. But you never know when something major will happen. We had no inkling of the epilepsy issue until he had a massive seizure during lunch at Fuddruckers and required EMT's and a 4 day hospital stay. Same with the emergency surgery - he developed an abscess and was in surgery 4 hours later. You absolutely cannot count on the fact that the kids might seem healthy, so you'll just pay for the occasional doctor visit. If not for Medicaid, we'd be looking at bills in the six figure range by now. When something happens, that hour or two you spent on paperwork will be worth it. Even if nothing major occurs, the peace of mind will be worth it too.
  2. This. My son developed pretty severe epilepsy a few years ago (and had an emergency surgery, non-related). He has Medicaid now but in April ages out of the children's health insurance here. Our stat did expand Medicaid but if that goes away with repeal, and he's no longer eligible for the state kids' insurance, we have a huge problem that is making my seriously panicky. His anti-seizure meds are covered now, but out of pocket would be more than our monthly rent. In addition, husband and I, thanks to the ACA, have health insurance for the first time in 15 years,. He worked for a small company that didn't offer any employee plans. I think putting emphasis on employer insurance discourages people from taking jobs with small businesses. Anyhow, stories like my son are what gets me so angry when I hear the GOP so willing to just yank out the existing plans with nothing at all to replace it with. Those losing insurance are real, actual living people, not just numbers on a spreadsheet. Guaranteeing 'access', which is their popular talking point now, is nothing.
  3. I do the cover and let sit method but here it takes longer since I am at about 4700 feet altitude. Water boils at a lower temp so it takes a little longer in the hot water to cook them completely.
  4. Thanks! I have a runner over carpet that drives me crazy because it's always moving around.
  5. I had to sit through a day long seminar once - our whole office was sent. That is many hours I'll never get back. He's a charismatic guy but I was not at all impressed and promptly forget all the ideas/suggestions/plans he insisted I do to better my life. It was just so over the top I was serioualy trying to figure out how to sneak out without my boss noticing.
  6. I also despise every app I own constantly wanting me to share everything with everyone I know. They don't care what I'm doing on the internet and I certainly don't want to know about every website they visit either. I really don't like seeing the half-eaten dinners of people I know on FB either. It never looks as good to use outsiders as it did when you started eating it. Re: digital peeves, I don't like all the bloatware that comes on new phones that you cannot uninstall without totally rooting the phone.
  7. Also the bound composition books. The kids go through them like crazy here so $1 for them is a good deal. The paper is kinda thin but they don't care. Plastic storage/organizing baskets can be good in the smaller sizes. I think they are too flimsy for the bigger ones. Also, the clear plastic shoe boxes are a steal at $1.
  8. We're aboupt halfway through and love it. I am also reminded of Dan Simmons' Summer Of Night and Robert McCammon's A Boy's Life. It has really sucked us in. All I have to say is ..What About Barb? :)
  9. Re: living on campus, I think it all depends on how you present it. My first semester of college, I was 20 mins from home (before I moved to a diffirent school) but chose to live in the dorms, not because my mom was into early curfews or anything but I wanted the dorm experience...to be with my fellow students, meeting new people, hanging out on campus, the late night gatherings in my dorm room just to talk, etc.So much of college happens outside the classroom and even now, I've forgotten things in my classes but I'll always recall so much that was cool about being on campus and wouldn't trade my dorm life for anything. If money's not the issue, she really should consider it. She will learn quickly though, that if she has a roommate who is asleep when she comes in that turning on all the lights and being noisy won't cut it. That is basic consideration.
  10. Use the notebooks for noting ideas you may have while you aren't at your computer but I'd use the computer to write. It's faster and so much easier to move text around as needed, and to save bits and pieces you aren't using right now but may use later. It's also easier, if you outline, to do that and have it open as you write. Revision is a snap. Most people type faster than they write, so if you're really in the writing zone and ideas are flowing, it's easier to keep up with your brain when typing too. I have several novel writing programs. Scrivener is good but has a somewhat steep learning curve (and I hear often that the Mac version is better than the Windows version). Storybox is similar to Scrivener but less complicated. There is always any word processor but they have their limits when you get into many chapters since you either have to split them up or make one monstrously long document. I also have a notebook handy when I'm not at my computer for writing down things I think of because I know I'll forget them by the time I get home :) Good luck and have fun with it! ETA: The NaNoWriMo forums are full of all kinds of writing-related stuff, even when it's not Nano month. IT's a great place to find reviews of writing software too.
  11. Here is the Al Jazeera live feed. Erdogan is back in Istanbul and is speaking now. https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera/videos/vb.7382473689/10154473961533690/?type=2&theater
  12. I get this too in the winter - SW Montana. It's dry as a bone here but exposed skin will get all red and itchy if I am not careful about it. Generally it's only my hands, and having thiem in really cold water does it too, but sometimes legs if they are exposed.
  13. We opened a savings account with our 15 year old and she had to have a state ID here too.
  14. I use the spray from the eyeglasses place (Lenscrafters) and it's awesome. It's safe on the anti-glare/anti-scratch coatings too and those are often the first things to break down.
  15. I sometimes think she lives in an alternate universe. Remember when she decided to try living on a food stamp budget and was buying the wackiest stuff? The things she bought would use up her entire month's budget in about three meals :)
  16. Weird. Both my Office version and the free one I downloaded (recently) have highlighting.
  17. Ahh that makes sense. Tho I seem to have two..one came in Office 2016 and the other is the free download for desktop.
  18. I've wondered about doing that. I have coconut oil, I may try it.
  19. The Draw tab has a pic of a highlighter and circles to pick the color.
  20. I think it will be a good match. I've been a fan of Raonic for a while and I think he will give Murray a good run.
