I showed my husband the picture. He said it looked like maybe excess zinc. He wasn't recommending eating it, just thought that's what it might be. Since we don't use canned pineapple we wouldn't know what it should look like.

Or maybe tin? Pineapple is so reactive that the steel cans are lined with a protective coating of tin. Tin is not water soluble and difficult to absorb biologically making it low toxicity, or so Wikipedia tells me. I've the can is opened, though, the tin protection starts to break down and become ineffective, so don't store unused product in the can.

I usually don’t use canned pineapple either, so I wasn’t sure if this was normal.

Yes it is the inside of the lid.

Not normal. We use canned pineapple chunks or rings often for making desserts. If I am not using the pineapple soon, I buy the frozen pineapple chunks in a bag.

Ok--I will be the dissenter. I think the can is normal for pineapple.  I've googled around, and Quora and Reddit agree with me 🙂

(I know this doesn't help for now, but in the future you don't need to throw away)

This was actually my thought when I saw it earlier--I'm pretty sure I've eaten canned pineapple like this before.  Then I began to worry about my own decision making process.

I thought it was normal too but my Google skills failed me.  Thanks for the info!
