Elizabeth86
I opened a can of pineapple today and the can looked like this. Is this normal? I don’t think I’ve ever seen this, but also I do not use a lot of canned pineapple. Would you eat it?

saraha
Is that the inside of the lid? It looks like some weird chemical reaction

marbel
I showed my husband the picture. He said it looked like maybe excess zinc. He wasn't recommending eating it, just thought that's what it might be. Since we don't use canned pineapple we wouldn't know what it should look like.

Pineapple is so reactive that the steel cans are lined with a protective coating of tin. Tin is not water soluble and difficult to absorb biologically making it low toxicity, or so Wikipedia tells me. I've the can is opened, though, the tin protection starts to break down and become ineffective, so don't store unused product in the can.

We use canned pineapple chunks or rings often for making desserts. If I am not using the pineapple soon, I buy the frozen pineapple chunks in a bag. Edited April 21, 2023 by Arcadia
Elizabeth86
Is everyone in agreement, don’t eat it? Has that ever happened here? 😂 It seems someone is usually in favor of eating the food in question. 😂 I certainly chose to toss it. Karen A
Ok--I will be the dissenter. I think the can is normal for pineapple. I've googled around, and Quora and Reddit agree with me 🙂  (I know this doesn't help for now, but in the future you don't need to throw away) Edited April 22, 2023 by Karen A added line 1
