Forget-Me-Not
My 14 yo daughter loves to bake and is very good at it. She'd like to branch out into fancier/more difficult things, like macarons. Can anyone suggest a good cookbook for this? I'd like to get her one as a Christmas gift. Thanks in advance!
happi duck
I don't have any to recommend but if she likes The Great British Bake off I think some contestants and the judges have cookbooks.
JennyD
Joanne Chang has some terrific books -- I'd recommend her most recent one, Pastry Love, as it includes not only new recipes but also re-tested versions of earlier ones. The recipes are organized by degree of difficulty and build up to some really complicated pastries. Dorie Greenspan also writes fantastic baking books, and she has a new one out as well, Baking With Dorie. You can't go wrong with any of her books, though. Finally, the books put out by King Arthur flour are consistently excellent. Edited December 1, 2022 by JennyD 1
Faith-manor
My best desserts have always been recipes from old Danish cookbooks. This is one of my favorites, written by a Danish American back in the 60's so it uses imperial measurements. That said, my best results are often from converting to metric, and weighing ingredients. Much more accurate and especially for pastry work. https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/wonderful-wonderful-danish-cooking-a-double-cookbook-of-500-danish-recipes-baking-from-coffee-cakes-to-pastries-to-torten-and-dining-from/8729148/item/24222090/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrtyP3Z7Z-wIVIW1vBB3QkABzEAQYAiABEgKOaPD_BwE#idiq=24222090&edition=8762533 I think there is an episode of Great British Baking that featured macarons. Season 2 if memory serves. Edited December 1, 2022 by Faith-manor
Clarita
This book is kind of expensive, and the recipes can be really advanced, but it teaches how baking works and gives you the ability to come up with your own recipes and tweak recipes to make them your own. catz
I actually don't have this one, it's on my list but I've heard it's a great general one for a baker and of course has the GBBO bent. 🙂(Paul has a series of cook books out there, a number of them have very good reviews) https://www.amazon.com/How-Bake-Paul-Hollywood/dp/140881949X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=65D2DX91UJ6Q&keywords=paul+hollywood+how+to+bake+cookbook&qid=1669930945&sprefix=paul+hollywood+how%2Caps%2C95&sr=8-1 Edited December 1, 2022 by catz 1
gardenmom5
I got this for my dd last year. (one review did warn the translator isn't a chef, and sometimes the translation is lacking.) use the metric system.

Carol in Cal.
Neither of these cover macaroons, but they are fantastic baking cookbooks: The Pie School Savory Baking (applies baking techniques to savory recipes rather than sweets) I have all three major cookbooks by Cheryl Day, and they are also outstanding. 1
EmilyGF
Anything by Rose Levy Beranbaum is amazing. She's both a scientist and an amazing baker, so any of her books would be great for the scientifically-minded baker. OTOH, she might be a bit too much and it might make sense to save it for later. The Cake Bible is a wonderful classic. 3

KungFuPanda
Has she used the Sally’s Baking Addiction website? She has at least one book out, but I don’t know how advanced it is. The website does have step by step directions, videos, and explanations for the more skilled recipes like macaroons and croissants. I’d recommend getting her a Madeline pan so that madelines will appear in your home. 😬. Here’s the website: https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/category/advanced/ ETA: She has a page of gift suggestions for bakers and now I’m shopping for my own daughter. 🤣 https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/baking-gifts/ Edited December 2, 2022 by KungFuPanda 1
HomeAgain
My two favorites right now are Mary Berry's bake book and Momofuku MilkBar (Tosi). They are not quite as fancy as what you suggest she might enjoy, but at her age I had access to a set of books that were fantastic: lots of pictures of what 'right' and 'wrong' looked like, common mistakes and how to avoid them, and recipes. It reminded me of what America's Test Kitchen and Good Eats ended up doing. May I make a suggestion? If she doesn't have one, a good kitchen scale would be a very nice gift along with any baking book. Being able to work with weight instead of volume helps alleviate many of the frustrations. Same with a good thermometer if she is going to do any sugar work. 3

HOWEVER! What about molds and a springele rolling pin? Those are such fun, and can be displayed as well as used. House On The Hill is the best source I know of for springele stuff. https://www.houseonthehill.net/ Edited December 2, 2022 by Carol in Cal.
