amyinva
I've never done a poll, so I hope I do this right, as it is a serious topic.
Mama2Many4
I've always snapped off both ends.
Susan in TN
I only cut one end of the bag open, straight from the freezer.
kewb
I know I don't have to snap off both ends but I do.

laundrycrisis
I don't snap them. I cut the ends off with scissors.
FaithManor
I snap both ends. I was trained by grandma and grandpa the avid gardeners from a long line of hearty farm stock. So, I've always assumed that there was a compelling reason to do this. I also snap into thirds after that because the beans fit in the jars better this way than when I leave them in stalks. However, for the 14 pints of dilly beans that I make, I leave the bean whole except for taking off both ends. Faith
Robyn
I cut off the stem end with a knife. It is really too much work though and I have been buying them frozen.:tongue_smilie:
eaglei
Snap both ends.

chepyl
Both ends on the rarw occasion I make fresh beans....usually, I open a can ;)
kalanamak
Other. If it has strings, I snap off one end, pull the string, and then do the other end facing the other side and pull. For non-stringed, if the non-stem end is skanky at all, I snap it too. But if non-stringed with nice looking tip, baby that is my favorite part. MamaT
I don't snap them. I cut the ends off with scissors. That is brilliant. I am so doing that.

I haven't made those in years. I know what I am making this weekend.
Truscifi
Snap both ends and pull string if a stringed bean. What are dilly beans?
Blossom'sGirl
I voted obligatory other because I planted 7 rows of green beans this summer and I snapped the 1st picking on both ends. My MIL informed me that she never snaps the tips off and, facing three buckets of beans which needed snapping, I thought that sounded good. Now that we have eaten some, I don't notice any difference. Home frozen green beans are the best.
OrganicAnn
By tradition/habit - I snap off both ends. We usually don't grow beans that have much of a string, so I could just do the stem. But I don't, I do both ends.
Brigitte
I know I don't have to snap off both ends but I do. That's me too. I have been trying to break myself of that habit, though.
DawnM
Oh, thank goodness.....I thought everyone here was in the wrong. Thankfully, I found another sane, normal individual! Just the stem end.
Denise in Florida
I snap off both ends but now I am wondering why?
Melissa in Australia
when I was a child my mother would cut the whole bean on an angle so they ended up in tiny pieces about the size of a pea. When I got married I did the same thing, believing that is what you are meant to do with beans. My DH just about had a stroke at the sight of my beautiful mangled beans. I now only snap the stem end and gently steam them whole, or serve them raw.
Daisy
I only snap one end. The other end is completely edible so why snap it off?
joannqn
I cut both ends with a knife, and you'll never catch me cooking canned or frozen.
*Jen*
If I'm doing a small amount and hand snapping it is just the stem end. If I'm cooking for a crowd then I will cut both ends with a knife. I do both ends because it's easier to trim both sides in a big bunch than to go looking for the few bad ends in a massive pile of beans. RebeccaS
Just the stem. As a child, I helped my mother can beans. I remember thinking it was rather silly and a waste of my time that I was told to snap off both ends and questioned my mother. She paused, thought about it and said, "I have no idea why I do that. It's the way my mother did it." I stopped snapping off both ends at that point. :D
JFSinIL
And toss any mutant beans over your shoulder. They will never hit the floor - the Labrador is waiting eagerly to gobble them mid-air.
AndyJoy
I snap off both ends, but dh and my mother both mock me for it. I know the other end is technically edible, but it seems bitter or hard or just not quite right on the beans I get at our local store.
