Part of me thinks doing A Beka's A Handbook for Reading and reading together is enough. Part of me thinks it's nice to have something guided. I've been looking at LLATL's red set. Her sister will be doing DITHOR, but she's not writing well enough to do the 2nd grade work. Any ideas? Blessings! Dorinda

Phonics & Math - A Beka History - BJU Press Heritage Studies 1 Science - WTM Bible - CLP Music - Our homeschool group has a choir/music appreciation classes I'm really looking forward to next year. I'm just using BJU as a spine, and going a little deeper studying the Vikings, the Aztecs, Jamestown and the Pilgrims, etc. It's been fun planning it all out. KrissiK
Sure! For example, in lesson 3, there's one page on Leif Ericson. So, I'm planning on taking a couple of days studying the Vikings. I've got "Who were the Vikings" Usborne Starting Point History, which seems like a great resource. We'll read, narrate a few of the interesting sections. I also got the coloring book "The Story of the Vikings" by A.G. Smith and will copy off and color a few of those pages. Read "Leif the Lucky" by the D'Aulaires. So, that's my plan for the VIkings. There's a nice (but not too detailed) chapter in HS on the Native Americans, so I'll supplement with library books and I've been looking at some activity books on Amazon. I plan on doing that for most of the biographies and the Pilgrims and Jamestown. The reason I'm going with BJU is I want my kids to have a very strong background in US History and I think BJU will afford that (with a little supplementation). Guest sarathan
Oooh, good post! I enjoy seeing what everyone is doing for 1st grade. :) So far my plans are: History: Truthquest American History I and Story of the Ancient World by H.A. Guerber LA: Queen's Language Lessons series. Math: Family Math, various math games. No formal math curriculum this year! Science: A hodge podge of books about nature, animals, space, and weather. Also, Science Around the Year by Janice VanCleave. I think I'm gonna have him start a nature notebook. Art: 1-2-3 Draw Dinosaurs, Enjoying Art with Children book. Music: Stories of the Great composers CD, maybe learn how to play a recorder?? Geography: I bought GTG and will probably just use it for geography. Bible: Have no idea! However, I do think I'm gonna buy one of the Bible Comes Alive CDs from Your Story Hour. I also plan on getting God's World News for current events. And I really like the looks of the Character Through Literature study guide by Beautiful Feet, but I don't think I'll be able to fit it in. :) Edited June 5, 2009 by sarathan Just being anal. :)

ClassicMom
If you live in Ohio, you do not need to/nor is it suggested to notify before the child is six. If you dd starts school, go ahead and keep a portfolio because you will obviously be way ahead when you do formal assessments when you reach the year six. However, you do not need to report to the superintendent until the child is six or will be six when the school year begins in August. Definately do not start reporting if your child is only four! ;)
