at the beach
I love these threads. I will also have a 7th grader next year, and I have started thinking about how we'll do things. This year, we are doing SL Core 5. I'd like to spend 7th and 8th on World History and 9th on American History with American Lit. But we'll see. So, I was thinking of doing as follows for 7th: Sonlight Core 6 with modifications: I have Spielvogel's Human Odyssey and I want to use that and cut SOWT as I think she's too old for SOTW. I figure we would do half of HO next year and the other half the year after. There are also some books she's read from Core 6 already, so I will add in some others from AO. I would like to add Daughter of Time, Joan of Arc by Twain, How the Heather Looks, and the poetry from AO. So, we shall see how it goes. I really do love the SL IG and even if I modify, I think I will still get lots of use out of it (I hope). I also have TCC high school World History to add in. Bible--leaning toward Ambleside suggestions for year 7 Language Arts (not SL) either Galore Park SYRWTL English 3 OR Our Mother Tongue, Grammar of Poetry, and Sentence Composing for Middle School. Math: I am waffling between NEM 1 and Jacob's. I think we'll probably go with Jacob's but I really love Singapore. Science: I am considering Mother of Divine Grace Natural History Syllabus. Latin: Latin Prep 2 or online course with Regina Coeli (Beginning Latin or Henle 1) Logic: Art of Argument maybe? Artistic Pursuits Artist Study/Composer per Ambleside Art History: Sister Wendy DVD's. Dance, Violin and piano I think that covers it. And then some. ;) Anita

MOH only has 3 volumes out, so I don't think I'll continue since it's going to be 5. FWIW, The author of MOH includes recs for how to beef it up for high school from volume 3 forward. (I'm not sure about v. 2.) Volume 4 is *slated* to be ready in 2010, and if she stays on track allowing about 2 years per book, then volume 5 should be due in 2012. That should work out right for you assuming she stays on schedule. Of course it is a risk, but if you like MOH, you might consider it. Then if she falls off the wagon and doesn't make the schedule, you might just have to substitute something for year 5. Another idea is to do what you said above, and then pick MOH back up in 9th grade at volume 2. I'm sure you could find plenty to make that volume high school credit worthy (as I know 3 and above already include recs for high school), and there may even be something on the yahoo group. I put it off as long as I could. My youngest, ds10, will not be doing Algebra in 7th. He's a different kinda math student. IMOP whether they do Algebra in 6th grade or 10th makes little difference. They all need to cover roughly the same matherial; basic math, algebra I/II and geometry prior to taking the SAT. There's a good chance that my 7th grader will have forgetten all of his algebra I before he get's to the SAT..so there ya go..:001_smile:

There are things I have liked about MOH, and things that I haven't. My problem with beefing it up is that I have a K ds that listened in and participated some this year. I'm not sure what to do with him. I'd like to expose him to the highlights of what she'll be doing the next 2 years, and include some regular social studies. When she starts 9th, he'll be starting 3rd. The age difference is why I chose MOH since it had activities for both, but my dd has been pretty bored with the older student suggestions. I've got a little time to think and pray about it, anyway!
sassenach
This is a good thread for me. Thinking about next year is highlighting the fact that I have more decisions to make than I thought. Here's what I know- Finishing SL 5, Starting 6 Abeka 7 LA IEW- my confidence level is not high on this. I need to explore this more. Science- Earth Science, undecided on which textbook. Math- ???? We've used MUS for years. I love it, but I want to make sure that it remains the best choice for Pre-alg. This is one of those decisions that I just realized I will have to make. Latin-LL2 Greek (?) Logic- probably fallacy detective I'm also looking into Lightning literature. Ack! I'm feeling a little 7th grade pressure :confused: DD will very likely be going to public hs, so I'm feeling the need to really gear her up. I was just looking over the curriculum standards for our local district. I'm feeling good about how we stand, but we really need to develop her writing a bit further. I believe if we maintain our forward motion in all other subjects, and then push her writing into a higher gear, she will be well prepared to enter high school. I know that in the long run, my dd will be better served if we take it nice and steady. There is plenty of time for abstract math in high school. We have other fish to fry. We'll be doing pre algebra next year, but my goal is for her to be ready for Algebra by 9th grade, even if it means to years of pre algebra. If she's ready for Algebra in 8th, that's great, but I'm not sweating it. This is one kid that needs to be gently guided through math. I will be pushing her writing in the next couple of years. For us, that's the priority. I feel bad when I read about all of the arts that everyone else is doing. Other than piano lessons, we do nothing. Oh well, I can't do it all, I guess.
