Slartibartfast
http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-32205289 As a mother of a six year old this is big news in our house. :)
Dmmetler
It's big news for my 10 yr old, too, even though she's largely abandoned extinct reptiles in favor of living ones :)

Farrar
I sort of love how you can do your field research in a museum collection. I heard a story awhile ago about a guy whose job was to go through all the old specimen collections and relabel them and recheck them in places like the Smithsonian Natural History Museum and I think he had the honor of discovering like three entire species. Most people out in actual fields can't claim that.

Suzanne in ABQ
We had these heavy rubbery dinosaurs when I was little. They had the name and weight of each molded in raised letters on their bellies. Brontosaurus was always my favorite. I was sad, years later, when I learned he wasn't really a "thing". Now I'm happy! He was a distinct species after all! :)

ElizabethB
Brontosaurus, meh. I want Pluto as a planet back.
Lawyer&Mom
I'm almost embarrassed how giddy this made me yesterday. I was dancing around the kitchen singing "We're bringing Brontosaurus back..." a la Justin Timberlake. At least the toddler was impressed.

wintermom
Now I can watch Flintstones again, and know that the Brontosaurus is correct! ;) (I wonder how many other things the show got right? )
fraidycat
Brontosaurus, meh. I want Pluto as a planet back. Being the rebel that I am, Pluto IS still a planet to me. :D
maize
I saw this topic header when it was posted but didn't have time to read it. Finally got around to finding it again :) My dinosaur lovers will be excited!
MercyA
We'll have to improvise some new lyrics when we sing "Apatosaurus, Brontosaurus" from the Wee Sing Dinosaurs CD. Very exciting!
imagine.more
Being the rebel that I am, Pluto IS still a planet to me. :D Yep, my kids are taught that Pluto is still a planet :D That's a legit reason to homeschool in and of itself, right? ;)
fdrinca
DH is a statistician who has worked on several paleontology projects. He's always struck by how little data there are about dinosaurs - in some cases, an entire species is determined based on ONE fossil find. There is so much error in this world. Remember the triceratops debate a few years ago?
hornblower
dd took a paleontology course this term in college. She noticed was that everyone wants to find a new species so many of the lit reviews she did were of people arguing that 'these 3 bones are significantly different than those 3 bones found there' and therefore my find is a new species!' & others arguing 'no, it's not'... FaithManor
This was big news here and my boys are 15, almost 17, and 18. We are headed to the Badlands in June and the dino mania is gearing up!
Storygirl
I find it interesting that that name dispute goes all the way back to 1903. I grew up in the seventies and eighties, and Brontosaurus was the name we used. I'm surprised it stuck around that long after it was decided by some to be incorrect.
