Well, a week after the counter-offer, I was PROMOTED.

Recommended Posts

Remember when I mentioned my on site supervisor had been fired? His replacement was supposed to start Monday. I was fine with that. I have only been with the company 7 months and only graduated a year ago. My credentials are higher than the position requires (Licensed Chemcial Dependency Counselor is a much lower license than I have) plus I had the career trajectory written down from when I accepted the counter offer.

Well, the replacement supervisor called the day she was supposed to start and declined. :confused1: I expected my owners to search for a new replacement.

Instead, they (they are a married couple) came into my office and gave me the title of "Interim Program Coordinator". They chose the temporary designation because I have not been trained (an issue I identified in the counter offer discussion) and they don't want to set me up for failure; they want to set me up to succeed.

The job includes the clinical stuff I am doing (screening, assessment, treatment planning, planning and running groups, individual and family counseling) PLUS marketing the program, supervising 2 clinicians and the Administrator. Technically, the LCSW is "under" me, but she's more experienced and credentialed and I will partner with her functionally. I am responsible for certain objectives and compliance (documentation).

The tricky part is I have now been promoted over people who were my peers. That is always awkward.

I think I need a new planner. :drool5:

I did not ask (nor did they offer) adjusted compensation. I have gotten 2 raises in less than 3 months. If/when the title moves into permanent, I will ask.

That is great news, Joanne! I had an experience in the past at a job in which there were five therapists. One of the therapists (an LPC) left and went to another job but returned at some point to become the Clinical Director and supervise his former coworkers. It was a fine arrangement which worked well. He had both the clinical skills and the ability and desire to manage the management piece of the job. He approached the situation in a humble manner, and it went very well for all of us. At this point, the supervisor of my current position is an LPC who is supervising another LPC with a Ph.D. and two LCSW's. The main "issue", which is really a non issue, is that he is in his early 30's. My co workers are in their 60's, and I am mid 40's. It works fabulously. All of that to say that it sounds like a great opportunity. I have no idea how to make my post in paragraph form on this new board. When I try to enter to move to a new line, nothing happens. Just wanted to explain my terrible lack of paragraphs...

Very impressive.

Coming back to add that the CEO specifically mentioned that the promotion does not derail or change the career trajectory he mentioned and put in writing last week. Ultimately, he still wants me to be the family specialist for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health side.
