cathmom
I want to know what happened to the father, but I just can't get into it. It's a really odd book.
Caitilin
Lol. I love it, as I love all her books, but yes, it is a bit odd. Do you enjoy other Nesbit?
dangermom
I love everything by E. Nesbit. I think it's very worth reading to the end to find out what happened to the daddy; that bit is what sticks.

Twigs
From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Railway_Children The story concerns the Waterbury family who move to "Three Chimneys", a house near the railway, after the father who works at the Foreign office, is imprisoned as a result of being falsely accused of selling state secrets to the Russians. Scroll over to read the spoiler. (Yes, I read the ending first!)

Rai B.
I didn’t like it. I don’t like Nesbit particularly, but I read this one and it turned out to be my least favorite of her books. Maybe because there is a lot of talking to no-one-I-found-interesting.
justasque
I want to know what happened to the father, but I just can't get into it. It's a really odd book. I wouldn't judge here books in general by this one; the others are quite different, I think. Some of her stuff is really great and others are a bit slow. It was performed as a play last summer at Waterloo Station and got rave reviews.
Little Nyssa
Wonderful book! There is a TV series based on it which is not bad, also. It is unlike Nesbit's other books, which I adore, in that there is no fantasy component.
JudyJudyJudy
I loved this book!
Manamana
Our library had a nice film version of the book on DVD either by the BBC or Masterpiece Theatre. I recommend it and I think it might be on Netflix.
tammyw
DD8 couldn't get into the book, which is odd for her, so I ended up getting the movie from the library and we really liked that. I guess it's okay if we're not able to read all books.
EmmaNZ
Do try to get to the end - it is SOOO worth it! I love this book, but mostly because of how it ends. It always makes me cry!
Soror
Where reading this now and loving it! I had to skip to the end as well! I am anxious now to read other Nesbit as this is our first.
Margo out of lurking
Nope, we did not like it, in fact, it was one of the first read-aloud books we just quit reading. I found it boring, and my kids just couldn't stand it.
Word Nerd
Yes, I love Nesbit, and this is a wonderful book.
prairiegirl
I"m not a big Nesbit fan but of all of her books, The Railway Children, is the one that I like the best.
Sparkle
LOVE. It's my favorite Nesbit book.
LibraryLover
I think it can be a slog, especially with all the Russian info. It's a book that works better with the historical back -story. It picks up. Keep going. It's nice to have that sort of language swirling about. Just do a chapter at a time, or 1/2 chapter, even. Nesbit is a wonderful writer. You will be rewarded. :) However. I would not keep reading right now if the kids were really upset. That would defeat the purpose. They might like Nesbit's The Book of Dragons. That was our fav Nesbit. You can always come back to RC. Jenny in Florida
One of my all-time favorites! I loved it as a child and loved it even more when I re-read it a few years ago.
Orthodox6
I and all the dc love Nesbit's books. Let me underscore that statement in pentuplicate ! "Oh! my Daddy, my Daddy!" never fails to bring a quick emotional tightening of my chest, whether I be reading the book or watching one of the two available movie versions. NicAnn
We like the audio version. I couldn't get into reading it either for some reason, but really enjoyed the audio.
HRAAB
I (we - girls too) LOVE that book. In fact, we LOVE all books by Nesbit. So much so that I am re-reading them for the 3rd time to my twins. Those books along with Wind in the Willows I so look forward to reading. After this go round, I'll have to wait for grandchildren.
cathmom
I'm not reading it out loud to the kids - I just wanted to know what happened and I thought my 7 yo might want to read it. I'm not sure I could stand reading it to the kids - they might be on their own with this one! I've been reading it a chapter at a time at most. I'm about halfway through.
