myfunnybunch
If you had just a handful of brussel sprouts and wanted to see if you like them, how would you cook them? Last fall, a gardener friend gave us some free fall/winter garden starts. I took one brussel sprouts start. Lo and behold, I've got brussel sprouts! Just a handful. I know I could Google, but I've only got a handful, so I'm looking for something simple and (hopefully?) yummy. That way we'll know if we want to say "More, please!" or "No, thanks," next fall. Thanks! :) Cat
Snickerdoodle
I always post this recipe. YUM.
Jennifer in MI
Yummy!!!! I quarter them, mix with olive oil, salt, and minced garlic. Roast them on 350 for a little while - 10 minutes maybe? (I just watch them) Yummy! Two of my kids actually prefer them raw (after they're mixed with the oil and garlic).
Alphabetika
I'd go simple - steam them and use LOTS of butter and salt. LOTS. *drool, drool*

Just make sure they brown a little (not burn). 10 minutes seems like too little. Go by sight and smell and you will have something very yummy. Miss Peregrine
I've only had them steamed. Yum!
Stacia
However you choose to cook them, cut off the stems & then cut an 'x' shape across the base (where the stem was). This helps them cook evenly (rather than the outer leaves cooking/being done faster). Yum! We love Brussel Sprouts in our house.
kalanamak
I like to put a deep X in the bottom of small ones and quarter the big ones, use a little szechuan pepper/salt/toasted mix (Penzey's sells) in some very very hot oil and sear them nearly black in spots. Eat right away on rice. YUMMM!

Kareni
My sister shreds and then sautés them in butter and olive oil. She serves them with bacon that has been fried crisp and chopped. They are universally loved even by those who don't like Brussels sprouts. (I do like Brussels sprouts but add bacon and I could love just about anything!) Mergath
I have to add another vote for roasting them with olive oil and salt. I love them that way. I actually prefer for the outside to get more done, because it gets crispy and good while the inside stays soft. Sooooo good.:drool5:
Aggie
My dd sautes garlic in olive oil, then adds the sprouts with tarragon and rosemary. When the sprouts are cooked, she serves them with sliced almonds.:001_smile:
myfunnybunch
Mmmmmmmmmmm. Yum. I like brussel sprouts. I tossed them on olive oil and roasted them. Delicious! I'm looking forward to trying some of the other suggestions. Thank you! Cat
suzf242
I like to steam them and then mix in butter, salt, pepper and lemon juice (or lemon-pepper seasoning if I have it). I have never tried the olive oil, but it sounds good, too. Take care, Suzanne

Oh.my.word. :drool5: I am pregnant, and this, oddly enough, has been a huge craving for me! I ask my husband to buy me a good sized bag of them when he goes grocery shopping. OrganicAnn
This is easy for a small batch of brussel sprouts- put a little butter and/or oil in a skillet and brown the halved or quartered brussels sprouts. Then as about 1/4 cup of water and cover for about 10 minutes until thoroughly cooked. Finish salt, pepper and a splash of red wine vinegar. You can do them alone or along with another vegetable - onion or carrots. Edited March 12, 2011 by OrganicAnn
astrid
Remove dingy outer leaves (and save to give to chickens!) cut off stems, cut in half, toss with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast at 400 for 15 minutes or so. We actually FIGHT over them. OH YUM. astrid
bookfiend
Sauted in butter with a dash of nutmeg at the end.
happypamama
I saute some garlic in butter and then add the brussels sprouts, lowering the heat, covering them, and letting them simmer until they're just slightly browned; then I sprinkle them with a bit of sea salt. (If they're large, I cut them in half before cooking them.) My 6yo LOVES these and when asked what he wanted for his birthday dinner a few weeks ago, replied, "Brussels sprouts!" immediately. myfunnybunch
Dumb Question: What size is a large brussel sprout? I figure mine were pretty small, since I pulled them to make room for early spinach. Cat

JFSinIL
I'd trim them, cut in half is large, and roast (tossed first with olive oil, a little s/p) in a low pan in a 400 degree oven for 15 minutes or so - :001_smile: YUMMY Size - to me, anything larger than the end of my thumb is large. Punchie
Slice 'em, sautee w/olive oil, salt/pepper. Mix w/toasted pine nuts. It's a perennial favorite in this house. My mom cooks bacon, crumbles it, sautes halved sprouts in the bacon grease, puts it in the oven to roast, adds chopped walnuts.
