WTMCassandra
I'm in the midst of planning high school, with great fear and trepidation, mostly because one child is engineering-bound. My other child is a humanities person who hopes to teach Latin, so this worries me a little less. Â I have a couple of threads from 08 and 09 showing four-year plans, but I haven't seen one recently. Â If you would be willing to post your four-year plan, I'd LOVE to see it, and most especially if your child is engineering-bound. If you don't want to put it "out there," please PM me and you can either send it to my PM box or I'll give you my email address. Â Thank you all!!! You are such an encouragement. People here locally just see me as that academic crazy person. The funny thing is that I am not even close to the most rigorous person on this board! Â Blessings to you. HeatherInWI
My dc were really ready to start "high school" last year at 10/11 and 12/13, so we are in year two of our six year plan, allowing for graduating the younger one at 16. The plan is subject to change as interests change, and is very heavy on the sciences as both are currently interested in careers in scientific research. On some courses, I've put a question mark on AP tests as the universities that we're considering don't give actual course credits for those tests. We do not live near a community college, and our state doesn't offer bargains for dual enrollment, so we've decided to go the AP route, but only in courses that would help the children toward dual majors at their chosen colleges. (Edited to add that all of the sciences except the Integrated Science do/will include labs.)  2009-2010 World Literature Algebra I Early Western Civilization Integrated Science (Teaching Co. Joy of Science & rec. text, tests) Spanish I Musicianship I Physical Education I Computer Skills (1 semester) Life Skills (1 semester)  2010-2011 Composition Etymology Algebra II (and Geometry, if time allows) World History Earth Science Spanish II Musicianship II Physical Education II Astronomy (1 semester - summer; a special opportunity at a university) Ornithology (one dc, a college level course for fun)  2011-2012 American Literature Geometry or Trigonometry U.S. History (& AP test) Spanish III Chemistry Biology Health (1 semester) Speech Communication (1 semester) Astronomy (1 semester - summer; pt 2 of special opportunity at a university)   2012-2013 British Literature Trigonometry or Calculus (AB level) Physics Spanish IV Advanced Chemistry (& AP test) Psychology (& AP test)  2013-2014 Language & Comp (& AP test) Calculus AB or BC (& AP test) U.S. Government Economics (AP test?) Michelle in AL
Here's my dd's who wants to go into aeronautical engineering. She's a junior now: 9th: Great Books of Ancient Literature English 9 grammar, composition & the works of C.S. Lewis Ancient History AP biology with labs Algebra 2 Computer Assisted Design and Drafting Mechanical (Potter's school) Music: Bass guitar, youth band  10th: Precalculus History of the Middle Ages Forensic science (this is when she thought she wanted to go into Forensics) English 10: Great Books of the Middle Ages Spanish 1 Computer Assisted Design and Drafting Architecture Driver's Ed  11th: AP stats American History 2 semesters (college classes through Univ of AL) Chemistry Aviation Science Spanish 2 English 11  12th: Calculus (AP?) Physics (AP?) English Composition 1 & 2 (College classes through Univ of AL) German 1 Government and Economics AP Psych (possibly) or computer programming.  Now, what I would have done differently:  Science sequence: AP Bio Chem Physics AP Chem or AP Physics  Math sequence (we did them out of order): Algebra2 Precalculus Calculus AP stats  I would also add in some sort of computer programming that would be useful to engineering and she would've taken German instead of Spanish since she wants to do a semester abroad in Germany. mom31257
My 8th grade dd will not be engineering bent, but here is what I am thinking right now.  I'm not sure which publisher to use for math yet. I've still got to look at my state's requirement for PE and other subjects besides the core stuff. I also don't know what electives she might want to take.  I will continue with MFW if the program works for her and we like it. We have not used their elementary programs.  9th MFW AHL (Bible, History, English) BJU Physical Science Online Algebra 1 (me teaching her math because I have a degree) Traditional Logic 1 Foreign Language (not sure which)   10th MFW WHL (Bible, History, English) BJU Biology Online Geometry Traditional Logic 2 Foreign Language (not sure which)  11th MFW US History with Government (Bible, History, English) BJU Chemistry Online Algebra 2 Classical Rhetoric with Aristotle  12th MFW US History with Economics (Bible, History, English) BJU Physics Online Pre-Calculus
JennW in SoCal
My 4 years for my science/engineering ds, who is 15 and a junior, looks like this:  9th: American History Literature: Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings Earth science Algebra 1: Foerster's Latin computer programming  10th: World History Literature Jacob's Geometry AP level biology Logic First robotics team and an internship with an electrical engineer (.5 credits each) Spanish Mock Trial team (extra curricular)  11th (fall semester) Algebra II at CC Chemistry with a chemist/homeschool dad Literature Civics 8 week internship at the zoo  After this semester he will be going full time to the CC primarily for the math and science classes he wants. He has also decided he would learn more Spanish in an actual class than through SOS Spanish and my nagging. When he is 18 he will apply to transfer to small 4 year liberal arts college, though he may take a gap year at that point.
elegantlion
Some of mine is speculation at this point since ds is starting his 7th/8th grade year. We may graduate him a year early and high school would start 2011/2012. I've * the subjects I'm unsure about. My ds is science oriented and is taking Earth science this year.  9th  Latin Alive II LL LotR World History - Renaissance through Revolutions *Integrated science (possibly using a British school text) bio, chem, physics. Adding in science great books, other non-fiction science titles Counting & Probability (AoPs) & Algebra I refresher (will do algebra this year) Japanese II Formal Logic *History of the Arts (using Boorstin's The Creators) Writing ala WTM  10th Latin Alive III or Lingua Latina Ancient Great Books (focus on Greeks) Ancient history *Integrated science year 2 Geometry Japanese III Argument Builder Philosophy Art technique class .5 *Computer class or Electronics class  11th Latin readings Ancient Great Book (focus on Romans) Ancient History II *Integrated science year 3 Algebra II *Grammar refresher *Economics *Another computer class, something in the media arts *Rhetoric  12th Latin Readings or AP Latin US and Modern World History/Lit Government .5 AP Science or other 4th year science (Environmental?) Pre-Calculus class geared toward his interests  My goals is to leave one slot per year to advance his interests. Right now that is in the electronics/computer/media arts area. I'll probably custom design something so he'll have plenty of time to explore the subject on his own.

Ailaena
DD is planning on aerospace engineering, but is not sure to pursue it undergrad or grad school. So it will either be that or astrophysics for a major. Or not, who knows what will happen between now and then!  This is the 4-year plan, but most of the pre-req HS-level stuff (where applicable) was completed in middle school. Since she is planning on studying abroad at some point, I am planning on (most likely) including them in the transcript.  9th World Literature Ap World History Art History Precalc Chinese 1/2 French 5 AP Bio  Summer in Paris  10th APUSH American Literature Music History Chinese 3 (4 also, if offered) AP Phys C - both parts Ap Calc BC AP French Rhetoric and Propaganda (a random, fun 1-sem CC class)   11th - ideally Fall semester in China  Spring: AP Euro OR Gvmt British Lit OR Eng comp at cc (probably be easier, but don't want to do that) Calc 3 Adv French Grammar/comp Self-study for Ap Chinese - no formal class Possibly some 1-semester science class like genetics or Programming or whatever looks fun at the cc. Or if we end up somehow not finishing E&M, then that. Maybe. If she is even capable of doing anything at all after being abroad for that long!  OR, if no China,  Western Civ AP Art History Calc 3/Diff E AP Chem AP Eng Lang Adv French Grammar/comp and Adv Phonetics/conversation Chinese (4)/5   12th Possible year in France if China did not happen (scholarship is only for the full year). Honestly, at this point, I am NOT ready for her to be gone so soon :( But can I hold her back from an opportunity if it arises? I may try... I mean, she can do this in college, too, right?:D  Otherwise: Ancients or specialized history topics at cc Linear Algebra/ (intro to adv studies or AP stats) Ap Chem if not in 11th OR A&P OR organic chemistry Ap Eng Lit AP Chinese French Literature    This post made me sad - I cannot believe how little time I have left!:crying: I should just say FORGET school and let's just hang out and go on field trips!! I doubt she would go for that, though... Has college plans and stuff...

Since she is planning on studying abroad at some point, I am planning on (most likely) including them in the transcript. Â I hope the OP doesn't mind:001_smile: It would be interesting to see yours and others middle school plans (or achievements) as my regret is that I did not start many things earlier. It is the foundation that the 4 year plan is built upon...We muddled around in middle school and are now regretting it with math, esp. Â Now with dd, she's doing Conceptual Physics in 7th and finding it interesting. FaithManor
Current 8th grader's plan for 9th grade:  Geometry - Jacob's for the text  Grammar - Abeka III  Writing - The Art of the Elegant Essay plus my old college writing text  Great Books/Literature - Early Modern era - Of Plymouth Plantation, Pilgraim's Progress, Paradise Lost, The Federalist Papers, The Anti-Federalist Papers, A Tale of Two Cities, Excerpts from the Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Benjamin Franklin Autobiograph, and On Walden Pond.  History - Finishing History of the Medieval World/SWB and beginning Hakim's American History - maybe with any luck SWB's third volume for Norton will be out before we pass into the next year's plan. Some excerpt readings from the Human Odyssey and Western Civ by Spielvoel will be sprinkled throughout...mostly essay exams, culture summaries, timelines, and two term papers (one per semester).  Biology - Apologia and some Holt  Latin - Wheelock  Practical Drafting  Bible Study - Personal Devotions plus Mere Christianity  Another elective to be drawn from three options using the M.I.T. online open coursework. He'll choose sometime next summer.  10th grade - Algebra 2  Grammar - Abeka IV (this is the last year that we do any formal grammar review - after that it is exclusively literature and writing)  Writing - Five essays, three character sketches, two sets of at least three short stories, five poems minimum 15 lines, and two term papers which are cross assigned on historical or scientific topics.  Literature - Oliver Twist, Darwin's The Origin of Species, Frankenstein, The Old Man and the Sea, selected readings of Edgar Allen Poe and Tennyson, Brave New World, Pilgrim's Regress, Ideas Have Consequences, Julius Caesar, , History - Modern Era with emphasis on modern American History - variety of authors and texts plus weekly current events discussion with his dad and grandfather who just love to talk politics.  Chemistry - Apologia plus Kitchen Chemistry MIT opencoursework  Astronomy - MIT opencoursework  Art History - Art by Ross King (reviews 2500 works of art) plus some one day workshops at the Detroit Institute of Art  German I  Bible Study - Self-directed devotions  Eleventh:  Trigonometry/Pre-Calc - text not yet determined, didn't like the one DD use though she did just fine - this ds is not quite so math minded so we'll need to be careful.  Literature - Les Miserables, Citizen Soldiers, The Hiding Place, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, Hamlet, MacBeth, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, D - Day (another by Stephen Ambrose), Amusing Ourselves to Death,  History - Civics and American Government - Constitutional Studies from HSLDA, American Government - Abeka, boring but contains the nuts and bolts, five trips to the county courthouse to watch cases in session, one interview with a judge, the senior 4-H day at the capitol to observe the state legislature in session and interview a representative, and three days in Washington D.C. plus two term papers on approved topics as well as five required essays throughout the year plus the piddly tests that come with the Abeka curriculum.  Science - Anatomy and Physiology - Apologia plus dd's A & P book from Paramedic class (she has also agreed to do some direct teaching along with grandma the retired nurse)  German II  Archaeology elective - MIT opencoursework online  Art - Introduction to Visual Arts - MIT  Bible Study - How Should We Then Live - Book and DVD's, plus devotions, plus C.S. Lewi's radio commentaries from World War II  Twelfth:  Free of math - this ds just can't be pushed beyond that so we'll keep reviewing using the Princeton ACT PREP and SAT PREP books.  Literature - Choice from an approved list of MIT Opencourseware  History - to choose from "American Revolution", "The Civil War and Reconstruction", or "America in Depression and War"...all MIT courses.  Science - Introduction to Geology (one of Ds's favorite science topics) MIT opencourseware  Videogame Theory and Analysis or Game design - dh is teaching ds beginning video game programming so he will help ds with his work in the evenings as these might be somewhat stiff courses by MIT  Bible Study/Worldview - Systematic study of the New Testament plus "Total Truth" and "Saving Leonardo" by Nancy Pearcey.  Volunteer Mentor and tutor for 4-H plus, if money allows, one of the European travel opportunities with 4-H as well as Capitol Days mentor and possibly spending one month as a page in the House of Representatives, D.C. (this will depend completely on finding an appropriate family for him to live with as our current reps to Washington D.C. ARE NOT AN OPTION - they personally get themselves in TOO much trouble to be trusted with my child!)  I don't give high school credit for Bible study. So, 3 math, 4 English, 4 history, 5 science, 4 Art, 3 Foreign Language (yes, I give high school credit once Wheelock Latin is reached), and 1 computer science. Total 24 credits. Michigan requires 20 to graduate.  Faith

Ailaena
Before I let loose with what we did for middle school, I must say that if I was not comfortable teaching math I would have totally done the AOPS classes. In fact, I really wanted her to do it this year for calculus, but I can't remember what happened and we committed elsewhere. And I am sad(ish) :(  I also would have probably used MCT stuff if it would have been available, especially in lower school. I swear, we were just a year ahead of everything good!  We also did daily random worksheet warm ups of about 20-30 min covering a variety of topics throughout lower/middle school. I wish we had time to do that now :(  6th Algebra 1 (Dolciani - Took an entire calendar year because we had a small break for some geometry so dd's head didnt explode) English 6 (Voyages in English 6/7) Science (Glencoe Integrated science Green and Blue) World Cultures (HS level distance learning experiment;)) Logic Literature (Prentice Hall Literature Gr 9) Spelling/Vocab (Houghton Mifflin Spelling 7/8, Wordly Wise 4/5 (old numbering), Word Within the Word I) Artistic Pursuits Jr High level   7th Geometry (Jurgensen) (Algebra at the same time but not as intensive using AOPS and Gelfland) English (VIE 7/8) Physical Geography w/lab (1 sem at CC) (aka Earth Science :P) Cultural Geography (1 sem at cc) Physical Science Logic (TL I/II) Literature (PH lit gr 10) Vocab (Wordly Wise 6,7, finish Word Within the Word) French I/II at CC Beginning Piano at CC   8th Algebra 2/trig (Dolciani) (more Gelfland and AOPS geometry and practice with harder proofs) English (VIE 8 and Jensen's Grammar) Chemistry (Intro to Gen Chem at CC, Intro to Organic and Biochem at home) US History (HS level text) Literature (PH American Lit and some novels) Logic (critical thinking books 1/2) Vocab (Wordly wise 8, WWTW II) French III/IV at CC Art and Archaeology of Ancient Egypt (fun CC class) Int Piano at CC  (month-long biology basics mid-May to mid-June in preparation for AP class)   So after going through this, I realized that not only was I more organized, we seemed to have more time! We got all this stuff finished and she still had 21-27hrs/w at gym. I think I need to reevaluate how our time is spent:glare:  Also, FWIW, there are no intentions to graduate early or enter college with any amount of credits. Part of it is that we don't know whether this year will be DD's 8th grade year (according to age) or whether we want to call it 9th grade. We have a tentative skeleton schedule for the basic requirements, assuming this year is her freshman year. We have not scheduled the electives - I don't know what will interest her when. If this year is 8th grade, we have an extra year to add. 9th grade Geometry and Algebra 2 Physics (she is auditing College Physics 1 and 2) French Ancient History World Literature 1: Ancients  10th grade Algebra 3 Chemistry or AP Biology French Medieval and Renaissance History World Literature 2: Medieval and Renaissance   11th grade Precalculus AP Biology or chemistry French Modern History World Literature 3: Modern  12th grade Calculus AP Physics French US History and Government American Literature  Ever year: Music Horsemanship Electives to be scheduled at some point during the four years: German Literature Latin 1 Art History Music history and whatever comes up

Brindee
Some of mine is speculation at this point since ds is starting his 7th/8th grade year. We may graduate him a year early and high school would start 2011/2012.  Is there anybody who does not have a fully thought out four year plan?We are not sure. Me, I don't have a fully thought out plan! :001_smile: What I put is tentative, depending on how things go..... We haven't decided whether to call ds a 7th or 8th grader this year, so we're in the same boat, but a year behind. I've been stalking this board relentlessly since August, lol. We all seem to be in the same boat. We called dd's last year 7th grade, but she soooooo wanted to be in 9th grade this year, that we told her we'd consider it if she put forth the effort. Well, she's DEFINITELY put forth the effort, and we have officially called this her 9th grade year now. She's so very happy about it, and is well capable of handling the course load.  We can't do CC classes 'til Junior year, which is fine. I'd rather her be older anyway. She says that's what she wants to do her Junior and Senior years, but we'll have to check it out more fully and see.....  Anyway, with dd's yearning (don't know why) to be considered a 9th grader this year, and our eventual decision to allow that to happen, she has really blossomed, and is working hard and doing so well! I'm afraid if we would've held her back, she would not have tried so hard, and not done so well. So, for those considering the jump. make sure you know how your child feels about it. I wasn't about to push her into it.....honestly, I'd rather have her in 8th this year (they grow up too fast already)! I don't want to start a debate about it, and I'm not sending her away any sooner, I just wanted to mention it since dd is doing so well with it, and I don't think she would've otherwise. :001_smile:
LauraQ
For my daughter who is more interested in a liberal arts education. Murphy101
I have a fully thought out four year plan. For that matter I have a fully thought out k through 12 plan. Thing is, the plans change every year.;) Â I have a plan and a goal and as long as we are progressing, I'm happy to modify and adjust as we go. Â I remember way back when I was so excited to be leaving MCP for Saxon math because if we progressed according to schedule, they could use Saxon all the way through calculus in 12th grade. This did not take into consideration that Saxon sucks for my kids and actually caused me to have to repeat pre algebra with lials bcd for my oldest, thus he is starting alg 1 in 10th grade vs geometry or even alg 2. And of course just about all science presumes algebra 1 concurrent or even completed, so that had to be adjusted as well. His Plan was modified accordingly. And I keep this in mind when creating a Plan for the rising kids. Â My previous plans also did not account for a son to love Greek history and want to spend a year on that. Or a son to beg for aviation classes and thus find a love of physics. Â A plan is great. Very flexible and adaptable plans.;)

DebbS
:iagree: Nice post! Â :iagree:too! Â What I try to do is to make sure that we don't limit them by neglecting subjects as we hone in on their passions. It's finding the balance between what they want to do now and what they need to do so that they can do what they want to do in the coming years.
