  1. DD18 will be going to Youngstown State's School of Music. She had a great audition there & connected with the 2 main professors in her areas of interest (piano performance & composition). It works for us financially too. :) DD16 will be taking a gap year. She just wants to write & work on her music, and she may apply to a few other schools this fall if she can better define what she wants. She is also still on the WL @ Kenyon, although we don't expect her to be admitted from it. Kenyon is the school she was most interested in, and she may reapply there.
  2. I don't know if these posts are making me feel better or worse! We are in a similar situation. I would be concerned about the quality of the business or economics dept. at the schools that are recommending the "just go with it, take on the crushing debt, & see what happens" course of action, lol.
  3. Well, my 2 girls have now both been waitlisted at 2 schools. One is no longer really being considered, but the other is one of my 17 yr. old's top picks. If she gets into either of her 2 others (we should hear from before April 1), this won't be an issue, but if not (or if she gets waitlisted at these also), I'm not sure how to advise her. Does anyone have any experience with staying on a waitlist & then getting in? I understand the chances are not good. It is pretty funny, though - they haven't been outright rejected anywhere yet. I was not expecting the uncertainty to be continuing...
  4. Both daughters waitlisted at Kenyon. Argh.
  5. My 2 should hear from Cornell next Thursday. I'll pm you if they get in, if you'd find that helpful.
  6. So sorry to hear that! If it makes you feel better, I can tell you that the Net Cost of Attendance for one of the schools dd18 was admitted to is $50,100. Per year. After merit scholarships. We just had to laugh - there's no way that could ever happen! We are fortunate that she was admitted to the School of Music at our nearby state school, it seems pretty good, and we can afford it. So far, that's her only option. We'll know more by April 1. I hope things work out for your son.
  7. Especially if he is interested in having livestock, I highly recommend a gap year or at least summer internship as mentioned by other posters. There is a family not far from us that has a farm like this, and college students go there to learn during their summers & spring breaks (it's also run partly as a Christian ministry). Getting dirty & doing the hard work necessary for at least a few weeks is a good idea to see if it's really what he wants to do.
  8. We're waiting too. We only have complete financial aid info. for 3 out of 9 schools; none of the 3 will work financially, but at least they weren't the top choices. It is very frustrating, but we're just trying to be patient. We are still optimistic that things will work out as they should in the end. It's hard on these kids - they're told not to fall in love with a place, yet they are told to demonstrate interest. So many mixed messages! "Tell us in an essay why our school would be perfect for you", but don't get attached. "We want you so much that we'll send you an email every day", but we'll actually defer/waitlist/ reject you.
  9. I think they just aren't there yet with the sound design concentration in their EMAC department. The thing that made it worse to me was that they knew we were coming - it wasn't just a random spur of the moment kind of drop-in. Everything I've heard about it supports the idea that it is a really good school, though. My husband bought one of their hats (with the mathematical formulas for R P I).
  10. Congratulations to everyone so far! Laura - no I don't mind. Here's what happened: Daughter was interested in a specific program related to music for video games, etc. that she had researched & seemed like it might be a good fit. When we got there, the girl from admissions knew nothing about it & didn't offer to find anyone who did. She then went on a 45 minute spiel about their engineering program, which my daughter had specificallly said she was not interested in. The admissions girl also hadn't gone to RPI herself- she had just graduated from another school in Troy (can't remember which one). We then went on the tour, given by an awkward grad student who just started walking away from us without talking until we got into the first dorm. He also knew nothing about the program she was interested in ( I believe he actually said :Do we even have that here?"). As we were on the tour, none of the students were smiling. I mean, not one! And then in the cafeteria, one of the students walking by leaned over and said "Don't come here!" to us. All of this happened the day after a visit to Cornell that couldn't have been more different, so she was really disappointed in RPI. She also wasn't particularly fond of the campus. She had no contact with them after the visit, which was in November. They gave her a $14,000 merit scholarship, but no grant aid or anything b/c we never added them to our FAFSA/Profile list. Overall, just not a fit for her. For someone just looking for engineering, it would probably be fine.

  12. Oldest daughter was accepted to Rensselaer as well. She applied before she visited, then had an awful visit, so it's off her list (it would probably have been off due to the financials anyway). Still nice to have another acceptance! The fight song was a cute touch, I thought.
  13. It may not be the school you're referring to, but I know that Cornell in particular said they were having trouble integrating the CA with their own admissions software, so it wasn't *just* the CA issues, it was over & above that. Very frustrating I'm sure, but I agree that it's probably a good sign for your daughter's admission decision that they're asking!

  15. Same here, although my 2 each applied to (only) 9. 3 safeties, 3 reaches, 3 match/slight reaches. Trouble is the matches don't appear to be financially viable, although they received the highest automatic merit aid at 2 of them ... we needed the tippy top competitive scholarship/full-tuition type scholarships, and so far that hasn't happened. If they get into their reaches we'll be ok, as they meet full need, but that's a big IF. At least one of the safeties is also a financial safety, so they can go if they want to, somewhere... I'm so glad *my* part in this is done!
  16. UGH. I'll call your CSS Profile and raise you IDOC. There's nothing like sending out all the information anyone would ever need to steal your identity. All before you know if the kids are even accepted.
  17. My oldest got her acceptance to Belmont yesterday! Now we wait to see about the aid....and audition....
  18. I haven't been around much for the last year (or two, I guess...) but thought I'd jump onto this. My oldest 2 are both graduating this year & so far have 4 acceptances at rolling admissions schools with merit aid at all of them. The first one to arrive was such a relief! Now we're waiting on RD for 5 more, Congratulations to all that have been accepted already! sidenote: Susan in Tn - my oldest dd has applied to Belmont & has an audition scheduled for Feb 8., also for the composition major. If your son happens to be there on the Feb 8th date maybe they'll meet! Glad he got his acceptance. She hasn't yet, although her audition is confirmed :confused1: .
  19. Thanks! I can use Firefox or IE, & had the same problem with both. I solved it by switching to full page while in Ffx. Silly problem, but very frustrating!!
  20. Hello all - I haven't posted on this board for a long time, but I do occasionally lurk, lol. :lurk5: I have a really basic question with the Common App, and it's probably not even a problem with the CA but maybe with my browser or something. Every time we get to the FERPA question - where you have to agree or disagree about waiving your right to access the ROLs, we can't continue! Daughter checks the little box, and I assume there is a continue button further down on the right, but we can't see it & the screen won't scroll down. They can't add me as the counselor until we get past this. Has this been a problem for anybody else? Does anyone have a clue what I can do? I am not exactly a techie kind of gal and it's making want to drop-kick this computer out the window! Not the most productive response, I know, lol! -Jen
  21. Hi again - just wanted to post an update. Our school district's public high school is letting the girls take the AP exams there! I was very pleasantly surprised ( of course, we didn't make a point of saying we were homeschoolers, just that we were in their school district and needed a place to take the exam - I'm betting that helped). Thanks for the input. It's nice to have something go smoothly for once! :)
  22. Thanks for the replies! They were very helpful. I'll be making some calls and/or visits tomorrow.
  23. I rarely post here anymore, but wanted to ask those of you that have already done this :) I need to find a place for our dc to take an AP exam next May. Already checked with the local private school - they don't offer that exam. That leaves the public schools in the area. The few folks that homeschool high school around here are not pursuing AP, so I have noone local to ask. Should I just call (or email) the high school office secretary and ask for the AP Coordinator in the prospective schools? I talked to the folks at Collegeboard and the man I spoke to wouldn't give me a list of the nearby schools offering that particular exam - he said that the nearby schools were not "open" to having other students come in to test. He really wasn't very helpful. Anyway, thanks for any advice or experience you might be able to share with me.
  24. We had the same question a couple of years ago for our dd, soon to be 15. She had the achievement test scores, so we went ahead & submitted the portfolio & she was accepted. I would say the primary benefit for us was the seminars she has had access to. We still haven't really connected with anyone IRL, so it didn't help much with helping her connect with other kids like her. There's no cost involved, so I would recommend trying. I don't think I would have bothered if I had to get the IQ test for her, though. HTH. :001_smile: I have gotten alot out of the parent's forums, which is another reason I'd recommend it.
  25. Thanks for the update - this school is on our list. Congrats to your son!
