Ooh, I love these threads...so fun to read everyone's.

Here's my plans for 7th next year:

Math: Videotext Algebra...should be working on Module C-E by then.

Language Arts:

-Vocab: Vocab from Classical Roots A...and maybe B

-Lit: CLE Lit for 7th grade

-Composition: Taking online class with Classical Writing, for Older Beginners

-Grammar: Maybe Harvey's to go along with CW or GWG 7.

Latin: Finish First Form Latin and start Second Form by Jan 2011

History: All American History Vol 2

World Geography: WP CATW...I'm excited about this one!!!

Science: Apologia's new Anatomy by Fulbright book (I know it's technically for elementary, but I have heard it is more suited for a bit older, plus I like to keep science on the "easy" side, yet interesting...so if it's a bit below him, so be it)

Logic: Hmmm, still pondering this...not sure if this will even happen this year

Activities: HS P.E., various team sports depending on season, and whatever else comes along.

...so that's my plan as of today....although we did enjoy a few FLVS .net classes this year, so I might find a way to incorporate a few of those

Let's see if I can remember:

During his reading time, he will be reading through a series of biographies of missionaries, followed by listening to the Bible on audio tape later in the year; he will be reading fictional books associated with our early modern history time period, as well as doing some of his own history and science reading. I have some geography books he'll be reading through and some map practice books for him to work through, etc.

For math, I'm hopeful he'll be continuing with a small group he's been doing algebra with this year. I have VideoText at home and will use it for reinforcement/review. He's using a Dolciani book in his class.

For writing/grammar, I'm considering switching from Abeka/Writing Strands back to Rod and Staff.....

For vocabularly work, he'll be using Vocabularly for the College Bound.

He'll be using Elementary Greek and Latin Primer III to study those languages. I hope that he will continue a weekly class with a native Spanish speaker, and he'll use Barron's Spanish Grammar the Easy Way at home (I also have Learnables and some other things on CD I may use with him at home.)

We'll be working through Introductory Logic.

I'm putting together my own readings for history and chemistry, per usual.

He'll probably continue an outside art class he started this year. He'll continue with his piano lessons. I'm looking at the potential for an outside writing class. And I'm hopeful that a UK chem professor I know is going to lead a small group in some chemistry explorations (yeah!)..... So we'll see how it goes....

Here's the plan:

Pre-Algebra - Let's see, I own Lial's and Auffmann but ds really likes LOF so we will be doing a mix of all.

English / Spelling - Giving CLE 7 a try this year.

Writing - leaning toward IEW Medieval Writing. We are doing the Ancient level this year but may have to work through the summer to finish.

Reading - He is trying CLE 6 now. I may use CLE 7 and/ or LL 7. I am going to wait to buy anything. He also gets a long list of complete works (usually history related) to read each year.

Logic - I have Critical Thinking but I don't know if we will do it.

History - I am going back to basics. SOTW 2 with the youngers adding on for him.

Science - I have CPO Earth science which I am not sure how it will be implemented yet. He is also a Lego robotics freak. So I may add in some Robolab activities.

Art - Artistic Pursuits

Music - Trumpet lessons

Spanish - We are going to use some of the recommendations in the back of "Getting Started with Spanish" I don't remember the titles.

Latin - I quit, I think we will do a casual root study. (If I had the Cambridge cd - rom I would consider using it)

Bible - R&S Bible 7. I struggle assigning this because it is a good bit of extra work but I think he is learning a lot.

I've only just started to think about 7th grade, but this is what I'm leaning towards at the moment.

Math - NEM 1

English (comp/grammar) - Oak Meadow 7

Literature - LL 8 (and OM 7)

History - Oak Meadow 7

Science - OM Life Science (our sequence is earth science in 6th, life in 7th and physical in 8th)

With my girls, I dropped spelling as a subject after 5th grade, and vocabulary and handwriting are done contextually, so I have no need for curriculum to cover those. I also don't do formal programs for PE or health in elementary/middle school, because I consider those lifestyle things rather than school subjects. Art is done at the local art center.

She's been dabbling in Japanese this year, and wants to begin studying more formally so I'll probably look for a local resource for that. She'd like to drop Latin after 5 years of study now, so I might let her do that, but enlist her help in doing Minimus with my boys.

Bible: BJU online Bible 7 or Apologia Who is God? + we will attend chapel on Fridays at his previous school.

Math: BJU online Algebra 1

English: BJU online Writing & Grammar 7 (probably just the grammar portion or R&S7 - finding this one hard to give up

Writing: IEW SWI-B (taking another stab at this - we are very behind in writing)

Literature: BJU online Excursions in Literature + Figuratively Speaking + lots of additional reading

Science: BJU online Life Science

History: BJU online World Studies

Language: BJU online Spanish 1

Spelling: Megawords 3, 4 and so on

We are hoping to add a lot more field trips, outside activities to our schooling next year. This is definitely an area where we fall short.

Our schedule is off b/c we school all year. DSS will have the 875 required (by the state) hours at the end of this month so I'll start counting hours for "7th grade" on May 1st. He will turn 12 in June.

math: we use Saxon. He will finish 7/6 in November and then start 8/7.

science: we use CPO. He will finish Earth Science in December and then start Life Science.

history/geography: medieval/Middle Ages, starting in September. Our spines will be Usborne internet-linked Medieval World, Rats, Bulls, and Flying Machines, and Van Loon's Story of Mankind.

grammar and writing: Scott Foresman Grammar & Writing (Gr 6) alongside Evan-Moor's Gr 6 DLR. Whenever he finishes that he'll start Stewart English Principles Plus, and whatever else I find for writing.

reading and literature: I have a big list of historical fiction relating to what we're doing for history. I also have a list of 'regular' books for him to get through.

art: He does his own thing b/c I am not even slightly artistic, lol. I provide the supplies he requests and occasionally I make suggestions for books mentioned here. Lately it's been a lot of colored pencil work and Manga drawing.

I'm feeling a little overwhelmed and behind as I read over this thread. I'm still finishing up SOTW with my 6th going into 7th grader (should I finish this up and move on to HO or just skip the rest of SOTW and jump into HO?), Physics for science/science month by month, Intermediate language lessons, MUS, daily handwriting, Catholic National Readers, Editors in chief, Exploding the code, Easy Grammar. Some other things too - but I try to do joint classes with my 4th going into 5th grader.

So disregard - I read another thread about feeling a little behind. You know it's okay with me. I remembered that I'm HS-ing to do what dh & I want for the boys. Life is too short to stress about this - so we will just wade through at our own pace. We will eventually get to where we need. I do appreciate looking at what others are using so that I can have an idea about what is available.

Thanks, Serena

Serena,

These threads tend to make us feel "behind" or not up to par. My going into 7th grader is academically and socially a solid 6th grader. Unless she matures an incredible amount by September, even if the number and age say 7th grade, I am going to treat her year more as 6th.

Afew of my kids were like this until the following year, where after just meeting them where they were at, and helping them forward, miraculously , they were more like 9th graders in 8th grade. Seems there is a big learning curve in 12 year olds. I refuse to sweat it and compare her.

I am not going to compare her to anyone but her...and she is bu no means a slow learner, or a dum-dum. DD is lovely and intelligent. To stress her out beyond her capabilities just to compare her to an arbitrary standard refutes the entire reason I homeschool.

So, relax, keep pressing on and enjoy your middle schooler.

They are so much fun!
