Our schedule is off b/c we school all year. DSS will have the 875 required (by the state) hours at the end of this month so I'll start counting hours for "7th grade" on May 1st. He will turn 12 in June. math: we use Saxon. He will finish 7/6 in November and then start 8/7. science: we use CPO. He will finish Earth Science in December and then start Life Science. history/geography: medieval/Middle Ages, starting in September. Our spines will be Usborne internet-linked Medieval World, Rats, Bulls, and Flying Machines, and Van Loon's Story of Mankind. grammar and writing: Scott Foresman Grammar & Writing (Gr 6) alongside Evan-Moor's Gr 6 DLR. Whenever he finishes that he'll start Stewart English Principles Plus, and whatever else I find for writing. reading and literature: I have a big list of historical fiction relating to what we're doing for history. I also have a list of 'regular' books for him to get through. art: He does his own thing b/c I am not even slightly artistic, lol. I provide the supplies he requests and occasionally I make suggestions for books mentioned here. Lately it's been a lot of colored pencil work and Manga drawing.

I highly recommend buying a Furminator. We have 3 Golden Retrievers and it has been the most amazing thing for grooming them. Our oldest dog is very furry and filled FOUR Walmart bags the first time we used it on him! We have the large yellow one which appears to be selling for $19.99 on Amazon at the moment. It's telling me $5 for shipping. I know they can be way more than that through the manufacturer and at pet stores. I think we paid $30 for ours 3 or 4 years ago.

I received this from our inter-library loan system today, and the back binding is very loose. I can't tell if we are missing pages or if this is the end of the book. (I've never read it, obviously.) "Will you come in to our house?" he asked. (page 254) Is this the end? Thanks! :)

Oh, I love Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle! I checked those books out of the library over and over again in elementary school. DSS liked them a lot, and I can't wait for DD to get a little older so I can read them to her, too. :)

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies! Golden Goblet and God King are waiting for us at the library, and they have an abridged version of Cat of Bubastes on audio, but they don't carry any of the other titles suggested.

I ordered some bargain items and got them last week. Short of a few bent edges on corners of books, the stuff was mint, seriously. I was so pleased. :)

Babysitter's Club and Sweet Valley Twins were my staples from about 4th grade to 7th grade. Then I graduated to Sweet Valley High and VC Andrews. I read everything by Judy Blume, stole my mom's trashy romance novels, and essentially read nothing decent unless I "had" to for school. *shame* My dad worked at book and newspaper publishing factory and when we had to go help on Saturdays, we were allowed to dig through the bins of books w/ stripped covers after we were done. Nothing good ever came from that, lol. The only book I ever remember my mom telling me I couldn't read was some smutty thing I immediately read as soon as she left the house to go grocery shopping, lol. I am very, very selective about what my kids read (obviously more so my 11yo).

....your DC's public school records (originals) after removing them from public school? According to WI law, homeschooling parents are entitled to their child's original and complete PS records, within 5 working days of request. We've had nothing but issues with the local school district since not sending DSS back to PS this year (despite being in complete compliance w/ the Department of Public Instruction homeschool laws). I'm anticipating attitude from the district when they receive our letter requesting DSS's records. Here's our letter to the superintendent. Do you think there is anything I should add or remove? We've had the purple "animal" Dyson going on 5 years now, and I've never had a single problem with it. It was definitely worth the $450 I paid for it. It keeps up quite nicely with our 3 (very furry) golden retrievers! :)

DSS (11yo, 6th) has always said he "hated" writing. I found and purchased a cheap copy of Writing Strands 3 at 1/2 Price Books, just to see if he'd try it. He said he enjoys the fact that it's just him and the book (for the most part), rather than me trying to 'teach' him something he doesn't like. Right now he is in the section on creating paragraphs and I was (pleasantly) surprised by the quality of his writing. We are new to HSing though, so I am not sure if Writing Strands is considered a good writing program. Just thought I'd throw out our experience since your DS is the same age. :)

I have the same issue with DSS. He has terribly severe ADHD and I can repeat until I am blue in the face, but until he sees it in print, he cannot repeat back what he heard.

Hi all... This is our first year of homeschooling. DSS came out of 5th grade/public school in May and turned 11 in June. We've been doing a light math review for the last few months, using Singapore Extra Practice. Things are going well, but I've noticed DSS's writing to be really lacking in proper grammar usage. He insists he has not learned much grammar in public school, and given what I regularly see when he writes letters and such, I am inclined to believe that while it was probably taught, he was not absorbing the lessons. He told me he really likes workbooks, so while I know they are not necessarily preferred, I think he would do well with a workbook style grammar book. So, and I truly apologize for the length of this, I am wondering if you think Easy Grammar 5/6 (teacher's edition) would be okay to use. I read on Amazon that it introduces 53 prepositions. Do the earlier books introduce other prepositions that are not included in this book? I like that the teacher's edition includes how to teach grammar and includes the answers to the worksheets all in the same book. Plus, even though he would technically be in 6th grade, maybe starting with the 5th grade lessons would help him make up for what he didn't learn last year in PS. Thoughts? Thank you! :)

We have seriously found a TON of our materials at 1/2 Price Books. I love that store. I ordered DSS's Singapore books, our maps, and our books for Ancients from Rainbow Resource. Most of our office/school-type supplies came from Walmart this year b/c I had gift cards from my mom.
