Not sure she will be retaking it in October now. Math was her lowest score, though, so might. I guess it will depend on SAT scores. My younger boy scores for ACT w/o writing hasn't shown up on CTY yet but my older boy scores did show up on the first day of release for his October test date. I think the student needs to be 13 for online scores, though.I check my kids scores through their talent search accounts as a parent. His essay score is 14 points below his composite. To be honest, he didn't do much prep for the essay. He is normally a fairly good writer. His scores are good for his age and grade level. It is definately worth paying the ACT fees for the baseline for this kid. He does lots better for an outside test than for us. (ETA: scores are better than the timed ACT practice tests at home) ETA: Hubby said our kid told him that he only complete half of Science and half of Reading. He did not finish Math either because he was tired after English :P Now to wait for the score report by mail. He is under 13. Add this to the fact that her math score didn't budge and even though she has a good composite, it's not the best test news. I'm thinking of ordering the $20 report that gives more details so she can see what happened. Luckily she's only a rising junior and will be retaking once or twice next year (it satisfies our yearly state testing requirement). Her current list of favorite schools doesn't include any that are highly competitive and some don't require the writing component at all. She wrote something like 14 pages for AP Language this year, and is a good writer, but, like your son, didn't prep for the ACT writing at all. Didn't have time. My younger used these prep books's English and Reading section as a substitute for language arts for 8 days (4 days a week, two weeks before test date). His English score (30) on the ACT is more than 10 points higher than doing the prep books under timed conditions and is closed to his scores when I let him finish so I know what he might be able to get if he was able to complete. He did the diagnostics and three tests from each book. His scores for the other sections were also many points higher than doing the prep under timed conditions despite finishing about half of Math, Reading, Science on the actual day. So prep really pay off for this kid. We used the library copies since we do school in the library most days. Test prep books are now all back in the libraries. We didn't do much prep at home, but she did a 1 week ACT boot camp because a teen friend of hers was doing it and didn't want to do it alone. Her score composite didn't change much (she gained one point overall), but the breakdown between the sections did. What we found in the prep camp is that if she does just one section, she can get almost every question correct, but when she does the whole test, she usually rushed badly on the earlier sections, and then got nearly every question right on the last one. Over the camp, she started slowing down, and the result was that on the actual test, her scores were closer together between sections, but all were reasonably strong, especially for her age, and probably are a better reflection of what she knows. If you don't want to buy the book, she does provide some tips in her blog for free. If it's helpful at all, it didn't seem to hurt middle son. He's a great writer (won contests in high school), but needs time to think and compose. He's not super good "on the spot." Colleges seem to realize this and not hold it against them. Some of his med school apps want his ACT scores now... As we were reading them off to him last night, we got to the essay portion and he told us, "Oh they don't want those," so it seems all is still well as far as that is concerned. For anyone looking for a short "quick" book on English "rules," The Elements of Style is tough to beat: https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Style-William-Strunk-Jr/dp/1557427283 Practice tests help too, of course. My guy liked Barrons the best because they concentrated on the hard questions (his reasoning). Note that some students get overwhelmed with too many of the "hard" questions, so other books could be better for them. Princeton Review was the most like the test (again, his opinion), and McGraw Hill provided some of the best explanations, but seemed to have more easy questions. He absolutely hated Kaplan as they taught tricks more than content. That and the many typos they had drove him bonkers. (Newer editions could have fixed the typos I suppose.) Technically he needs a quarter point too for the composite. Literally one question more right. I have been doing some curriculum searches for something that he might perceive as fun. VERY FEW are recommending or requiring the essay portion for either the SAT or ACT starting with the 2017 class. Too bad I didn't top up to get his test scripts but comparing both my kids score reports, what he said about the number of questions he managed to complete kind of tally.
